PROJECT TITLE| ESTABLISHMENT OF MECHANISMS AND STRUCTURESFOR THE ECOLOGICAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM| | NAME OFPROPONENT| LOCAL GOVERNMENT UNIT OF TUNGATUNGA, LEYTE| | THE PURPOSE AND ANTICIPATED END RESULT OF THE PROPOSAL| INSTILLING THE VALUE OF CLEANLINESS AND COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITY BY STRENGTHENING THE ECOLOGICAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM.  THE ESTABLISHMENT OF MECHANISMS AND STRUCTURES WILL PROVIDE CASH INCOME BENEFITS TO 1,251 POOR HOUSEHOLDS.  PROPERLY MAINTAINED 3,150 LINEAR METERS MUNICIPAL DRAINAGE SYSTEM WILL INCREASE RICE PRODUCTION IN 19 HECTARES DIRECTLY SERVED NON-IRRIGATED LAND and 168 HECTARES “PASAKAY” IRRIGATED RICE-LAND.  INSTITUTIONALIZATION OF R.A 9003 WILL INCREASE VALUED CONCERN OF 1,275 FAMILIES IN SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT ESPECIALLY THE TUNGA AND NALIWATAN RIVERS.  IMPROVED AND CONTROLLED 5,225 SQ. M. FOR THE MATERIAL RECOVERY FACILITY (MRF) SITE WILL ENCOURAGE STAKEHOLDERS TO PLANT AND PRODUCE HIGH-VALUE VEGETABLE CROPS IN ONE-HECTARE TECHNO-DEMO FARM USING THE ORGANIC FERTILIZER GENERATED FROM THE 30 SQ. M COMPOSTING AREA AFTER THE SEGRAGATION AND PROCESSING OF COLLECTED WASTES IN THE 86 SQ. M. 1 INTRODUCTION

The municipality of Tunga is found in Island of Leyte, under the administrative jurisdiction of Region VIII.  It is specifically at 11° 15’ east longitude and 124° 24’ north latitude.  Tunga is approximately 44 km. from Tacloban City, the regional capital and about 52 km. from Ormoc, the city on the north.  Tunga is a 6th class municipality with an only eight (8) barangays; five (5) of which are classified as urban and the three (3) are rural.  The population is 6,212 conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) as of 2007.  Tunga is predominantly an agricultural municipality.  The total number of households is 1,275 (CBMS 2009) in which, fifty percent (50%) of the households (638) are engaged in farming.  Other sources of income are carpentry, masonry, business and employment while few are OFW’s.
