Pre-K Observation
In the Pre-K classroom I have been observing the past couple of weeks, I did Instrument 7.5 which is Visual Indicator and Oral Indicatior and Occurences which is how often Mrs. Valentine does something. Visual Indicators are certain things such as how many times does shes write on the board, uses overhead, points to or holds up a visual picture of something, shows a slide or film, demonstrates with model or equipment and other visual aspects. Oral indicators are providing or asking for examples, telling a illustrative story, recalls personal experience, relates a lesson to the past, poses a problem, compare and contrast something or other. I rated Mrs. Valentine a 5 on writes on the whiteboard because she uses the smartboard now more than the actual whiteboard. When using the overhead I checked off a 10 because she always has something displayed on the overhead so the children know what lesson they’re doing at the moment or they’ll know what assignment to do. On Fridays in the afternoons, the children go to choice centers and on the overhead Mrs. Valentine will have their names under each section and the children can go up to the …show more content…
With “Tells illustrative story” I rated a 10 because a lot of the times she will give very descriptive details of a story. “Recalls Personal Experience” I gave a 1 because Mrs. Valentine doesn’t really tell her own personal experiences to the class. “Relates to past learning I said a 10 because sometimes she will go back and ask the children if they remember doing this before with another lesson. “Poses Problem” I gave a 10 because she will challenge her students and see if they’re able to figure it out themselves. “Compare and Contrasts” I rated a 10 because Mrs. Valentine will compare certain things and see if the children understands or

    I observed a child throwing a fit at the mall the other day. This child did not want to leave the store and did not want to get into her stroller. She started to throw her head back and scream very loudly. Then she would throw her arms around and kick, in an attempt to not be strapped in.     The work is shown out and all of the additions are correct. The book’s mathematics content is visible and effectively present throughout the entire story. Addition is clearly shown on almost every page and the diagrams and written work to solve each problem is also shown as part of the illustration. The student’s actual worksheets and notes are drawn out so readers can clue into his thinking process while working on them. For these reasons I would give it a 5 in this category as well. The book’s mathematics content is intellectually and developmentally appropriate for its audience of second graders. Along with being about addition it also discusses the topic of working together, and knowing the difference between tattling and telling when things need to be told. This is a huge topic for students in early elementary school. I would give it a 5 for this. I would give it a rating of a 4 for the category of the book facilitating the reader’s involvement in, and use and transfer of, its mathematics. It is good but it doesn’t have any problems for the students to figure out or any activities that specifically go with it like the percentage book did above. The book’s mathematics and story complement each other well, a 5 for that as well. It can relate the addition to the story and make it fiction and not just straight facts. It makes it more…

    Every year that I was in school, up until ninth grade, the teachers had us write a letter to the new students for the next year to make their transition just that much easier. Another things that I liked about the book is she described setting up her classroom for the first time. She included how she dressed up her bulletin boards for the first day, her mean teacher outfit for the first day, and why and how she arranged the desks. Honestly, as a student learning to become a teacher, these are not things that one normally thinks about before they actually become a teacher.     Later the work becomes a little repetitive but the points made are valid. The focus of the essay seems wayward on occasion with the student more concerned with what the book teaches the reader. The final paragraph sums up the essay reasonably well. However, there is much to praise in this essay. The student constantly quotes from the text and her quotations are well chosen and supported by intelligent comment. On the other hand, it is a little disorganised and does not stay firmly fixed on task. It would seem that the student has decided on her list of qualities and then given examples to support her points. She misses the chance to link the qualities to the reaction they inspire in the children. This is Band 4 work and deserves a mark of 29.     Blue’s class she reminded them of the Bill Nye video that they had watch, and the kids remember lots of things from the video. This was a great way to get the students engaged and to help with a visual representation. She also gave each of them a chance to explain their reason and definitions with the whole class. She kept the students engaged by having them all take turns reading and highlight as they went along. Her role was to present questions for the students, who were to think about the answer and then share with one another. It was a good idea to spilt the students in to partners to discuss. In Mr. G’s he explained that the students had only been giving him work that was about fifty percent effort. He did allow for students to take out there phone and take pictures of the board to make sure they had the information. They also were very good at reading along with him and answering his questions out of the book.     Henrey treated each and every student like they were special. Mrs. Henrey acted as if all of her students were her children. She called us her daughters and sons on many occasion.     The date of my observation was April 27th, 2010. It was about 9:30 in the morning when I began my study. I went to Grossmont College’s Child Development Center. The first thing I began looking for was if the child-teacher ratio was correct. The child ratio was 2 teachers to about every 8 children. The ratio was good. As I entered there was one large room that almost looked as if it could be two rooms they way it was set up. One half consisted of a large bookshelf with numerous books on it with a couch in the front of it. The other half of the room was almost like a little kitchen. It had a table with chairs around it with a sink and cabinets behind it. There were “age appropriate” toys as well as books all over the room. The areas were both clean and seemed to have no safety hazards. I then walked outside to find almost like a little wonderland for kids. It was so amazing. There was tons of stuff for children to explore and to expand their imaginations. There was a dirt path that went around the children’s whole play area, which was occupied by children riding their tricycles. Then to the right side of the play area there was a huge jungle gym and some play kitchen sets. I observed about 2 teachers that were outside and again 8 children. The teachers outside seemed very respectful towards the children. It was very equal from what I observed. The teachers were very interactive with the children and very helpful when needed. My first impression of “cultural diversity,” I would say that based on just children outside; there are a good mix of Caucasian, Mexican, African-American, and Asians. There seemed to be an equal amount of girls versus boys. The center was kind of hectic but was handled very well by all staff. After observing my surroundings for a minute or two one little girl caught my eye. She reminded me a lot of my two year old just based of her looks and her personality.
