Appreciation

Assalamualikum, Firstly, I want to show my appreciation to Encik Atan Bin Selamat, my Physics teacher as he helps me to do this folio by giving guidelines to do it. It is such a big contribution to me. This is because without those guide , I will not be able to do this Folio/Research in a proper way. Thank you so much to Encik Atan. Then, I want to say thank you to my parents, Encik Saharudin Bin Othman and Puan Sarina Binti Mat Isa for giving me their support in form of money, efforts and motivation to do this Folio. Lastly. I would like to give appreciation to my friends and everyone who helps me with this Folio directly or indirectly. This Folio really helps me in understanding the topic of Chapter 5 : Radioactivity more effectively.

Introduction

In the last 100 years, the discovery and research and development in the field of radioactivity has brought many benefits to mankind in various fields such as industry, medicine, and agriculture. This also helps archaeologists estimate the age of fossils and artefacts. In this Folio we can understand some objectives such as: * Understand the nucleus of an atom * Analysing the radioactive decay * Understand the use of radioisotopes * Understanding of nuclear energy * Recognize the importance of proper management of radioactive materials

Analysis 1.1 Nucleus

Even from its discovery atomic research has been filled with doubt and danger where every massive breakthrough has resulted in fear its potential. The radioactive age began in 1869 when Wilhelm Roentgen discovered X-rays, being the first practical application of a radioactive invention. (Silverstein, 31) In 1898, the Curies discovered the element of Radium and from then on America would never be the same. Radium found its way into paint, candles, and eye washes. In 1938; however, Otto Hahn-a German chemist and physicist-fired neutrons at uranium atoms and succeeded in splitting an atom for the first time, this event would ultimately change the entire course of human…

Otto Hahn was a German chemist who revolutionized the field of nuclear chemistry. Following a lifelong interest in chemistry, he found himself on the forefront of radiochemistry research in the early 20th century. Through a series of chance discoveries, he and his fellow researchers brought radiochemistry out of the realm of theoretical research and into actual practical science. One of the practical uses of this research led to the development of nuclear weapons. While Otto Hahn’s lifetime of education and research led to great contributions to chemistry, it also led to his dedication to using his powerful voice for social causes, especially to limit the threat of nuclear weapons.…

Nuclear waste is a radioactive waste that is dangerous, and a fair percentage of people would agree on this topic. However, is it really dangerous or is it just harmful to an extent? In society, many debates are held over trying to prove to the world that this substance is harmful. In the essay, “Nuclear Waste,” Muller states clearly that he sides with the anti-nuke of the debate and how he pinpoints the facts of nuclear waste with great persuasion. Yet, it is uncertain whether Muller clearly has a good argument and/or answers the questions that many people linger to know.…
