Physical Therapy Day
Hi Aeron,

HAPPY PHYSICAL THERAPY DAY!

Thank you for spending time to read my article and giving some insights and citing another journal that can be useful to further elaborate the discussion. It is up lifting that you are finding ways to flourish yourself as a professional.

Crist, McVay, & Marocco (2014), noted that last 2000, HOD already passed Vision 2020 that contains direct access information to be implemented by physical therapists in both federal and state level (p.6). Although up until now, not all states practice direct access (APTA, n.d), it is right to say that APTA has a plan to escalate direct access in the whole country in the future. Reading from the journal you cited, even though it is based in Australia, we can relate it as to what may happen if we are not fully educated about our roles once direct access will be fully implemented here in USA. Crane & Delany (2013), elaborated how Australia’s definition of scope of practice, advance practice and extended scope of practice differentiation and how it affects effectiveness of physical therapist in emergency department setting, advising that PTs should be further equip themselves not only with core

Physical therapists here in US, as I can see, will face a lot of struggles before becoming a nation that has direct access, since until this day, there are still six states that has limitation for direct access (APTA, n.d) despite the fact that the professionals in these states, as I believe, knows how to practice autonomously.

Let us just not stop to chase opportunity to learn, so that once that change will be implemented, we will be

American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Vision 2020 is similar to a jigsaw puzzle. To appreciate the whole picture, we have to piece together the interlocking tabs and pockets of the puzzle. Clinical decision-making (CDM) serves as the tabs and pockets of APTA Vision 2020. CDM works as a link among the elements of Vision 2020, namely: autonomous practice, direct access, doctor of physical therapy degree, lifelong education, evidence-based practice, a practitioner of choice and professionalism (APTA, n.d.). An effective and efficient patient care is founded on CDM (Wainwright, Shepard, Harman, & Stephens, 2011). All clinicians had developed from a novice, intermediate and experienced therapists. Each one of us had undergone a metamorphosis…

What I find most intriguing in this article are the doubt that encircles the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions and how evident it is among medical professionals. In Waite’s article (2014), even the doctor doubted the occupational therapist’s ability to understand the complexities of primary care intervention logistics. It’s discouraging and at the same time creates a little self-depreciation not only to occupational therapists, but also to the rest of healthcare professionals. An effective team requires mutual understanding that other healthcare professionals can bring significant contributions to the table. It is the only way to collaboratively deliver quality patient care.…

The purpose of licensing health care professionals is to protect the public from incompetent or impaired practitioners. Practicing medicine requires a certificate of licensure from the state in which the practitioner is working and may require licensure in the state where the patient is located. Similar laws cover other practitioners such as nurses, pharmacists, therapists and other professionals dispensing health care services. A practitioner must be licensed, or follow state reciprocity rules, prior to working in a state. In light of telemedicine, licensure requirements can be complicated. Before practicing medicine, the practitioner needs to ensure that his/her activity is legally sanctioned and…

“Direct Access" typically describes patient's ability to consult with and receive care from physical therapist without the legal necessity of obtaining a referral from another healthcare practitioner (Fosnaught, 2002). Having direct access would definitely have a big impact in my current practice in assisted living facility and community based outpatient. It would open up a lot of opportunities for I can see my patients coming to me directly for their neuromusculoskeletal problems without the trouble of waiting for more than 3 weeks just to get a referral and before their condition worsens. The long wait times to see their primary care physicians, lost or expired prescriptions are some of my patient’s dilemma right now. All of these add to…

Despite these “bumps in the road”, I am hopeful and confident that the future of physical therapy is much better. Perhaps, the ACA’s emphasis on prevention and wellness programs will eventually lead to a wealth of new business opportunities for physical therapists, and therapists will become increasingly involved in patient care decisions, including those related to post-in-patient treatment plans. This could go a long way toward achieving complete…

Merriam-Webster defines profession as “a type of job that requires special education, training, or skill” (http://www.m-w.com). It seems what direct access provides physical therapy is true autonomy, and through autonomy comes a putative recognition by both the general public and other healthcare professions of physical therapy’s specialized body of knowledge and an implicit trust that physical therapists have the training to be able to recognize when a condition falls outside that body of knowledge. Thus, direct access is the vehicle through which physical therapy establishes itself as a profession in our healthcare…
