Standley Lake, Conifer high schools cancel classes Friday due to teacher absences
Subject: Conifer and Standley Lake high schools were canceled Friday because of the high and unusual number of teachers that were absent. The county was unable to get enough substitutes to fill in the voids and school was cancelled.

Occasion: Teachers are trying to make a point since they are now getting payed a lot less. But they are denying that their absences were a part of a protest.

Audience: This article may have been directed to confused students and parents. To explain what was going on that Friday.

Purpose: To let everyone know the situation that the schools were dealing with and what the district and teachers had to say about it. Also to inform other members of the community.

Speaker: Kieran Nicholson - a staff writer for the Denver post - covers breaking news. Eric Gorski - a member of the Denver Post’s investigative team - favorite styles at the moment are sours, saisons, IPAs and double IPAs.

Tone: Concerned, informing, unbiased
Throughout the entire article the authors had a professional tone that was not a certain side. The audience could still tell that they were concerned and were informative at the same time.

Summary Paragraph: The cancellation of school on Friday has caught the attention of many members of Jefferson County. The schools were closed for security and safety reasons for the students. Many teachers called in sick or took a personal day but the Jefferson County Education Association (who represent teachers) said they “did not organize a protest” (Paragraph 5). Superintendent Dan McMinimee says that he thinks there are other ways to work this situtation out “without putting kids in the middle of it” (Paragraph 4). Friday morning, students gathered near both schools with signs showing their support for the teachers.

Consider the various participants: The people that should be interested in this case should include the parents, school administrators, and the teachers and/or paraprofessionals in the classroom. Since it appears that there was no intentional wrongdoing by the teachers, the administrators are probably understanding of both sides of this particular situation. However, the parents are going to want to know where their money went. It indicated that a lunch costs between $5 and $6. As for the teachers and/or paraprofessionals in this particular classroom, there is an understanding they mishandled the situation; however, they do not believe there is any intentional wrongdoing. They only used the funds given to them for classroom materials and purposes. With the information provided, I am not sure if all facts have been adequately communicated to all parties involved. I think parents have the right to more detailed information about how the money was spent by the teacher, such as supplying…

Parents simply wished for their children to follow the rules and never argue with schools. This idea changed however by the climax of this movement after the LAPD had become physical with students who decided to protest once again the unequal treatment. On a day when the 5 schools decided to proceed with a walkout, many parents showed up, leaving the Police force inactive. After these nonviolent movements, the LA board of education finally decided to hear their request. Such request included the right to use restrooms during any hour of the school day, school libraries to be broadened, no physical punishment to be…

Both teachers and the school board often have trouble finding a compromise during the creation of a new contract. Teachers often ask for an increase in salary, better health care benefits, and a shorter working day. Most school boards usually give a counter offer no where near what the teachers are asking. In most cases these two sides never are able to reach a compromise that will work for both parties. Jeannine French states that she was unable to create a contact for the teachers that was comprised of what they were asking because it was “fiscally irresponsible to our community and the future of this district” (qtd. in Crompton). Ms. French exhibits that she wanted to get the teachers back into the classroom but was unable to do so because…

    Tinker V Des Moines Case

In December of 1965, John Tinker, his sister Mary-Beth, and Christopher Eckhardt, who all attended public school in Des Moines, wanted to publicize their anti-war position by wearing black armbands to school to support a truce until the holidays were over. The school district learned of their plans and planned to suspend anyone who refused to remove their armband. Although the students were aware of the policy the administration created, they arrived to school wearing the black armbands days later, and were promptly sent home and suspended. They did not return to school until after the holidays, which was when their planned protest expired. The three teenagers involved in the protests filed a Civil Rights lawsuit in a federal court through their fathers. They issued the court an injunction, or an authoritative warning, that would bar the school system from disciplining the students as they did by suspending them. The district court sided with the school board, however, concluding that “the schools had acted reasonably to prevent a disturbance of school discipline, and the students brought their cases over to the Supreme Court.…

Critics beleive the European Union is a project devised by and for the elites, lacking democratic legitimacy. Turnouts for the direct elections to the European Parliament has been consistently falling since they were first instituted. The parliament has never had more power, yet trust in the EU is seems to be at an all-time low and the economic crisis is making this problem more severe. Even Enrico Letta, Italy’s prime minister, reckons Eurosceptics could win up to a third of the seats. He also wants to shock pro-European forces by turning the European election into a contest for the next president of the European Commission. Advocates of this hope to strengthen the commission’s democratic mandate, focus the contest on European issues, and raise the stakes to avoid the ballot turning into a protest against unpopular national governments. The EU is part international organization and part federation and a direct election makes sense should the commission ever be granted federal authority, including tax-raising powers. European politicians can never have more legitimacy than national ones, so national leaders should lead the fight against Eurosceptics in defending the benefits of integration, fixing its flaws and, in the euro zone, explain the reforms needed to stay in the single currency.…

The landmark case of Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District set the precedent for the free speech rights of both students and teachers. Students at a public school in Des Moines, Iowa were suspended after organizing a silent protest to publicize their objections to the Vietnam War. After suing the school district for violating their children's right to free speech, John and Mary Beth Tinker found themselves before the United States Supreme Court, where it was concluded that students' free rights should be protected. Justice Abe Fortas claimed that the lack of facts to adequately “forecast substantial disruption of, or material interference with, school activities” on school grounds made it unconstitutional to deny the student’s “right of expression of opinion” (Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, 1969). It is clear that the civil liberties of students need to be taken seriously while they are in school. This also extends to the right of teachers while on school grounds. Because of Tinker v. Des Moines, both students and teachers are now able to freely express their first amendment rights as long as they do not cause a disturbance to the school. This case brought awareness to school districts limiting students’ rights, and continues to affect decisions…

Sadly, some of the children that joined in only decided to participate due to the fact that it was the cool new trend happening and basically falls down to bandwagon actions. She states that it may be the cool thing now but after this dies down in the media, nothing is really going to change. She states that this “negligence, incompetence and inattention to the core mission of education and ensuring students’ safety” does not just change because students are walking out of schools. In order to back this claim, she gives the example of the Broward County school board in Florida and how after finally looking into bad things and putting a temporary end to them only lasted temporarily. In other words, Malkin believes that the national school walkout allowed children to join in on something that overall seems to be a good cause but will not have an impact on society. It also will not have a huge impact because a wide range of students were fighting for something that they did not understand or did not fully look…
