Pestle Summary Russia
For each of the 8 countries we're covering, we'll start off with topline statistics as sort of a summary, or more of a launching pad for further exploration. We'll start with Russia, partly because this may be the last 5-year period that it is included in the top 10 international powers. Out of all the 8 countries I will look at individually, Russia faces the most daunting challenges. They have faced worse--I would hate to be a centenarian from Russia--but I doubt if they have the resources or leadership to avoid a sharp general decline over the next five years.

Most numbers here are from Wikipedia or the CIA World Factbook, with a little Nationmaster thrown in.

GDP: 8th in the world 2009, 1.75 trillion
Population: 9th in the world, 142 million
Military expenditures: 5th in the world, $50 billion

The Russian Federation just finished a spectacular decade, averaging 7% annual growth since 1998. But at the end of that spectacular decade, their average income is $640 per head, their life expectancy is 66, and they only average 14 years of schooling. They really needed to make better use of the Golden Decade.

Russia is extremely dependent on exporting natural resources, especially natural gas and oil. The price of those are falling. So is their population--it's declined 5% since 1993 and although it is slowing it shows no sign of reversing. Alcoholism, drug addiction and AIDS are taking a heavy toll on Russia. Inflation is high, at 12%, and unemployment looks to increase from its current 6%. They've already blown through a good chunk of the petro-dollars they had put aside, and the current economic crisis is not going to be kind to Russia.

Seems pretty clear that Vladimir Putin is very much running the show, with President Medvedev along for the ride. This suits the Russians just fine--but it shouldn't. A decade of rising oil prices made Putin look a lot better than he really is.

Their levers of power are the energy they supply to much of the EU and

For more than two centuries, Russia and the United States have shared a diplomatic relationship. Whether that involved trading or the military. Foreign relations between the former Soviet Union and the United States were driven by a complex set of ideologies, political agendas, and economic factors, which led to the superpower rivalry that has been on display over the past two-hundred years. Presidents from both nations have been involved, from President Ronald Reagan to most recently, President Barack Obama. For Russia, the most well-known leader was Vladimir Putin, the “geopolitical wrecking ball.”…

After much research and seeking the advice of all of my colleagues I have come up with what I believe will be the best direction for the President to go in regarding this matter. First thing is first, it would not be a wise decision to raise taxes. The reason this will not be a good decision is solely because decisions need to be made that will not only benefit the government but the country and all of its residents as a whole. Although some of our people are able to pay more in taxes, not all of our residents in fact there are more individuals…

Corruption is on of the biggest problem Russia has to face on, but the anti-corruption politics are also a problem. Indeed anti-corruption raids are used by Vladimir Putin as a political weapon to give a signal to mafias, oligarchies and administration. In a country where corruption is everywhere, at every level of the society, the Kremlin uses anti-corruption offensives to arrest its enemies or political contestations. Besides, Russian society has many more issues. Even though the Russian economic growth is spectacular with 6,4%, and Russia is now the tenth economy in the world, Russia in only 65th on the HDI list. Russia was experiencing three revolutions all at once. First, they were attempting to fashion a new democratic politic system (and truly needed to replace the old Communist-era constitution). Second, they were trying to launch a new capitalist economy. And finally, they were coping with its postimperial status: within a few short years, Russia had lost the Cold War and its superpower position in the world, had given up its influence over Central Europe and neighboring republics that had been part its empire since the 1920s.…

The article focuses on the aggressive rise of a new Russian Empire under Putin. A supporter of the Russian President claims, “He’s not quite Stalin yet, but he’s getting there.”(Times, 32) Multiple times in the article Putin is compared to Stalin in his search for power and Russian military superiority. Putin is determined to be the next big imperial power. Putin seems to be completely overcome with his need for power. For instance, the article claims (Times, 33), “Today Russia has the third largest military budget in the world.” With 4.4% of its GDP spent on the military, Russia is marching towards modernization. Yet Putin has done very little to actually help the Russian people, instead he chooses to focus on making Russia a powerhouse in the military world. This need for power has Putin looking to Imperialize in other countries. He is trying desperately to drag along some of the former Soviet Union states.…
