Personal Narrative: The Olson Family Cabin
Up on the mountain tops, just past Payson and just before Strawberry, lies my home away from home. It’s the good old, Olson family cabin. Sitting at approximately 5300 feet elevation, Pine, Arizona is naturally 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix. It is not your typical log cabin. Rather, it is a small house with a large loft, almost as big as the house. It is surrounded by tall, rich green pine trees, and for that reason my family has dubbed it “the cabin.” The Olson family cabin has had a profound affect on my life because of the lessons it taught me growing up, the people I spent time there with, and the activities it has inspired. It’s astonishing how a little place can have such a large impact on ones life. How one cabin could teach, a growing child, so many life lessons. The cabin never failed to deliver these lessons, from basic home improvement projects to …show more content…
Most of which still take up all my free time. Being located in the mountains I can just walk out of my backdoor and begin a hike. Prior to the cabin I couldn't figure out why people would just hike and walk for no reason. It took one little hike to change my entire thought process. On my very first one I saw deer, elk, squirrels and countless beautiful birds. I saw a creek surrounded by luscious flowers of all colors and thorny berry bushes. Falling in love with the outdoors, my brother and I took it a step further and decided to try out camping. Starting in the back yard sleeping near the house with wifi, we slowly transitioned into hiking miles away with our entire camp on our backs. You can say we got addicted to camping fairly quickly. Recently we began fishing, my absolute favorite activity to date. It only takes a quick hour long drive along one of northern Arizona’s beautiful highways to get to our fishing hole. Surrounded by huge boulders and and the flowing verde river, we found the perfect spot to fish and take in the immaculate

The day begins bright and early. The sounds of the birds chirping, mixing with the warm glow of the sun shining through my tent, act as my alarm clock for the day. As I exit the tent, I inhale a deep breath of the crisp mountain air. It feels cool and fresh in my lungs. The campground is packed full of random campers from all across California and Nevada. This is defiantly the busiest time of the year for Lake Tahoe Valley Camping Resort. Being so close to the big blue lake, there is no way I am going to miss the most incredible display of fire works in all of California.…

The Burns family is the first Black family I met in the ward. Albert Burns Junior was cool! He had swagger, as is the contemporary way to address it. I have never been one for slang, but he, Albert Junior was cool like Dexter. His cool was different though. His cool stemmed from the fact that he grew up in the church with both parents. I wanted that; so, I watched him. I became a micro-Moroni! I thought he was royalty because I knew that he was sealed to his parents, he grew up in the church, and he was BLACK! Albert was a year behind me I think. I watched him interact with his parents and live life like normal people. I hungered to be in that position because Albert was from an all-Black family, the Burns family. Now, my international friends…

There is always a summer someone is changed by. It may break them, or it may lift them- but the core fact is that it changes them. They leave it feeling as if they are a completely different person, hardly able to recognize the person they were before. Maybe some haven't experienced it yet- but it is destined to happen. For me personally, it was during my time at YMCA Camp Hanes this past summer.…

The harsh Chicago winter winds whipped across my face. Even as bundled up as I was, I was still freezing. I was supposed to be over at the Gallagher household almost ten minutes ago, but as usually I was running late. Over the summer I spent almost every waking moment there with my boyfriend Carl. Then he got himself arrested at the end of summer and has been in for only six months with another six to go. Ever since he went to juvie I haven't gone once to go visit him. I know it sounds selfish, but after he got arrested something about the way I feel about him changed. It's not that I don't love him anymore, at least I think. I just can't quite understand what changed. I had finally arrived at the Gallagher household. I hesitated before knocking…

“The bunk house was a long, rectangular building. Inside, the walls were whitewashed and the floor unpainted. In three walls there were small, square windows, and in the fourth, a solid door with a wooden latch. Against the walls were eight bunks, five of them made up with blankets and the other three showing their burlap ticking. Over each bunk there was nailed an apple box with the opening forward so that it made two shelves for the personal belongings of the occupant of the bunk.”…

From that day on the fire pit behind my house became my place of comfort. When I’m feeling depressed or stressed out I’ll go out and make a fire, listen to music and just relax. I’ll think of the one perfect night I had out there with my friends and it helps put me at ease. Even when I’m happy I’ll go out there and enjoy everything around it like the smell of campfire and the pine trees. No matter what mood I’m in I can go out there to sit and think about anything. I never would have guessed a fire pit could mean so much to me, but I’m glad I was able to find a place where I feel content.…

People say taking a vacation is becoming expensive and a waste of time. Well living in the country as a child was like camping every weekend. We spent hours out in the forest of trees we had on the property, many adventures were made there. We had our own swim hole at the river on the property. My brothers had built a fort out of railroad ties. We spent many nights sleeping out under the stars, camping to me is like reliving childhood. I feel that its a chance to reconnect with family and friends, experience new adventure, and enjoy the outdoors. I had such a time camping with my best friend and family July of 2004. Our trip was at Lake Solano in Winters, Ca. we spent two wonderful days there. Our first night after setting up camp, we spent the evening by the river bank.…

Three hours north of my house in Brampton, is a cottage in a town called Muskoka. It's not the greatest place to live as I'm city raised and used to the hustle, but to get away from the city, it's just what the doctor ordered. The cottage itself is small two storey building about 3600 square feet. The outside is blue and the trimmings along the roof, windows, and doors are painted white. The cool country air smells nice and clean, and along with the beautiful lush scenery, makes you feel as though you've entered paradise. Across the road from the cottage is a luscious field with rolling hills. The hills are dotted with wild flowers and dandelions and the grass is greener than a crayon. To the left of the cottage there is a forest teeming with wildlife. Birds chip and sing from sunrise till sunset, deer wander the land, and you will see the occasional fox or raccoon scurrying by. The trees themselves have stood the test of time and are countless years old. They tower above the ground and have grown to be very thick, about as wide as a Smart Car is long. The forest itself stretches as far as the eye can see, all the way into the horizon. On the right hand side of the cottage is a detached garage on the other side of the driveway. The door is open and through it you can see a pair or snowmobiles, mountain bikes, an ATV, and a dune buggy.…

My family and I have always loved are camping trips, especially the ones the take us deep into the depths of the Sierra Nevada mountians. There's a very unique and beautiful camp ground near Mammoth Lakes called Devils Postpile. My is it beautiful, two gigantic crystal clear lakes, wildlife sites that could easily be posted in any National Geographic magazine, and trout that have enough meat on their bones to suvive in the deepest of any ocean. One little problem I always have had was that my father was a better and more experienced fisherman than I was resulting in that he would always catch the bigger and more beautiful fish and almost certainly come home with twice as many fish as I had caught. This was it, are summer vacation, finally it was time to get out of the intense heat and bordom of Ridgecrest.…
