Personal Narrative: Shanty Hollow
In my neck of the country I get to see pretty amazing sites every day. However, a 45 minute drive in any direction, the sites and the mindset about the world outside changes. In my hometown everyone knows that perfect trail, the hidden away spot to have a first date. When I moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky for college the idea that I was leaving a part of me behind because I had to “adult” now was overwhelming. Can a busy city offer me the sites and waterfalls I grew up around? What I didn’t know, but soon learned, was there is a hollow out in Warren County, Kentucky that still to this day takes my breath away.

It is a wonderful place for rock climbers and family camping. My favorite aspect of Shanty Hollow is it’s open year round. So, take that summer hike with your family, friends, or just yourself. Go find the waterfalls within Shanty Hollow. If you go after a heavy rain, the main waterfall is accompanied by 100 smaller waterfalls. Go take a nice cool rest in the cave which also makes a perfect swimming spot if you seek it out. Personally, I would rather see that waterfall at the end of the hike glistening in the sun from ice crystals that have formed. So take that drive, anytime of the year, bring the kids and let them get their feet wet, or go taste that ice crystal. Just remember the few rules of the outdoors, please take out everything you take in and hit the trail in boots. If you happen to go after a rainstorm, the sight is breathtaking but it will turn from an easy trail to a muddy nightmare in flop flops.

Mini Canyon

One last word of advice regarding the kiddos’, on a good day the trail is easy, but however, there is an incline to get to the waterfall at the end. Over time water did its thing and erosion has started. Thus we have a jaw dropping view of a mini canyon that

Greg was trained to survive on the streets as well as in jail. He became vicious and hunted weak prey by dawning a ski mask and robbing drug spots armed with a shotgun. He would bark orders, knocking heads and collect all the valuables. His drug addiction called for this and he followed, faithfully. His brother Dan convinced him to enter a 90-day program in the heart of skid row in downtown LA. In the first 30-days of his stay in the program he walked the streets while out on a “pass” and saw many people I knew and have known. His skid row life-changing experience taught, and he learned. Greg began to slow down and started becoming more “regular” doing more “normal” things with a new circle of people also in recovery. He soon got married…

As soon as I feel the sun’s warmth on my face peeking over from behind the rim of Crater Lake National Park in Oregon, I am wide awake. I open my tent to see deep, vivid reds and pinks, along with bright oranges and yellows and the luminous sun in the middle of nature’s masterpiece. Although it is only around forty degrees this morning, I can feel my heart burning with the desire to explore the various park features. It is only my first day at Crater Lake, and I can already feel myself beginning to love this unique, wonderful place.…

An upstate New Yorker need not travel far to experience truly breathtaking views. Letchworth State Park is an unexpected sanctuary of beauty nestled along the Genesee River, just south of the city of Rochester, New York and only hours away from other major cities in the upstate area. Touted as the "Grand Canyon of the East," Letchworth State Park is the site of an expansive and winding gorge flanked by diverse layers of bedrock that date back hundreds of millions of years (“Letchworth Gorge: Overview”). The awe-inspiring Upper Falls, Middle Falls, and Lower Falls can be viewed from various vantage points located on multiple trails along the canyon 's edge ("Letchworth State Park and Campground"). These 66 miles of twisting trails (“Letchworth State Park”) are perhaps the most appealing aspect of the entire park to explore. They dip in and out of the direct sight of the waterfalls and gorge, allowing visitors glimpses of more introverted wildlife. The combination of the gorges, waterfalls and myriad hiking trails make Letchworth State Park one of the most beautiful places in the Northeast to visit.…

Some people enjoy the beach, others enjoy the mountains, but my favorite place is Branson, Missouri. Imagine peering down from the dock into a body of water in which you can see every little detail as it descends toward the bottom. You look up and see the cascading Ozark Mountains as if they were part of the border of Mona Lisa’s frame. A hush and peace unlike any other overwhelms you. You can hear the calming sounds of nature as an underlying harmony to that peace. The birds croon soft tones as the water flows softly past the dock. As the morning begins, a cool breeze floats off of Table Rock Lake giving the sensation of Fall no matter what time of the year it may be. Your stomach begins to growl as the smell of fresh baked…

Have you ever heard of the famous Great Wolf Lodge indoor water park? Last September, Tommy and I took the kids there for the weekend and had an amazing time. We had a great time because the whole place was very family-friendly. There was more than enough activities to keep the whole family excited and busy the entire weekend. The most exciting and enjoyable place that I have ever visited was the Great Wolf Lodge in Charlotte, North Carolina. I was a camp counselor at Camp Wabikon ‒ a co-ed overnight summer camp located in Temagami, Ontario for children who are 6-15 years of age. Along with teaching Red Cross swimming and lifesaving and Tennis, I was my cabin's 'parent' for six weeks. Therefore, I was present with the children at all times. In essence, I was the leader of my cabin's the physical, social and mental development. The main things I learned were the importance of time management and organization , as I had to plan lessons for swimming and Tennis while taking care of my cabin; conflict resolution between campers; and the ability to plan and foresee events (I had to plan camp-wide events and activities for all campers).…

The park also boasts a system of hiking trails that take hikers through about 10 miles of forest, dunes, and beach. And while there is a main path that leads campers from the wooded areas to the dunes and the beach, many trails wind between those spaces, and allow folks to find a more secluded path to the sand. In the winter, cross-country skiing becomes the best way to explore the trails.…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

Over the summer, my parents and I took a rousing vacation to Northern Alaska. As a young girl, I always yearned to visit Alaska and viewing its vast mountain range and nonpareil wildlife. As there wasn’t much opportunity to see that in the monotonous New Jersey. I have always considered hiking and viewing natural pulchritude as a form of merriment. Case in point, my father and I hiked in the Grand Canyon, approximately three years ago , feeling like diminutive ants astray in the colossal canyon. Likewise, last year my parents and I hiked the foothills of Yellow Stone National Park, our shoes strewed with desiccated sand that were deprived of water. We missed the gargantuan canyon and the repugnant odor of sulfur from the geysers. I immensely enjoyed the hiking we did in Alaska. Nevertheless, what caused me to be aghast in reverence occurred near the beginning of the 2nd day of my trip. As an illustration, my parents and I were traipsing in front of our cottage early…
