Personal Narrative: Roller Skating Classes
I strongly believe that giving back to my community/school in one way or another is the most important thing outside of my academics and this is why I want to become an RA. At the age of thirteen, I started my own roller skating classes. Being the instructor of a roller skating class and running the class on my own taught me to be a leader, to grow from my failures and it gave me the opportunity to give back to my community. I learned how to skate in Washington, where my instructors were passionate and enthusiastic for the sport. Their positive energy was so powerful that my love for roller skating continued to radiate within me, even after I made the move from Washington to California. The impact that my instructors made on me and their ability …show more content…
The RA is in charge of creating the community environment because they coordinate, plan and implement social, emotional and educational gatherings where residents come together to get to know each other. Successful events, where resident attendance is high, allows residents to create bonds with people they probably do not know. Every trait that an RA has directly influences the sense of community. Overall, the RA is a very critical aspect in a building because they foster relationships within residents that allow for a sense of …show more content…
Through my assistant job at the library I have learned to work with a staff to plan events for kids during the summer. I learned that planning is not easy and there are many administrative hoops that you have to jump through in order to plan a successful event. I have been teaching roller skating to kids in the community for about four years now and this experience has taught me to work with people all ages and has given me a chance to develop leadership skills. I have learned to be an empathetic leader, by helping them learn and grow from their mistakes and providing emotional support. Spearheading this class was no walk in the park. This experience put my leadership abilities, patience, and positivity to the test; however, I am proud to say that I have taught over four hundred students how to roller skate proficiently over these past 4 years. Being a roller skating instructor has really shaped my qualities and values I have now. These leadership qualities and skills I have gained from my experience of being a roller skating instructor are transferrable to my ability to be a good RA. I know that this job will help me continue to improve my leadership skills and allow me to learn from my residents, co-workers and supervisors. At last, being a crew leader has given me the chance to be a mentor and a leader, guiding the freshmen to discover what it takes to be

I’ve always have worn Ridell brand skates when on the rink. They are the best out of vanillas, hard-candy, and sure-grip skates. The all don’t hold up quite as well as ridell. While everyone is on the sidelines trying to fix my skates, I’m out there speed skating to my music enjoying life.…

I continued to build on this by becoming a student ambassador, where I spend either 4 hours or even the entire night with a prospective student, showing them the campus and all of the glorious opportunities here. As a result of this personal growth, I was privileged to be selected as one of the inaugural shift leaders at Alumni Gym. I am now one of the point-men for any questions or concerns relating to the gym. By becoming an RA I hope to continue this personal growth, becoming more and more well-versed and meeting more and more people on Union’s campus. Additionally, I will be gaining critical skills that I believe will enable me to be successful in life particularly being a leader around students that are either my age or not much older or younger. I anticipate many issues, especially relating to having to be the smart person when my peers are being unintelligent and ensuring the safety of everyone else in my building and around campus. However, in order to grow, one must be faced with challenges, and it is how that individual confronts those challenges that determine how that individual will grow. The leadership opportunity that the RA position provides not only will provide me with immense growth, but will allow me to…

The pain that shot through my veins and in my leg was like when I try to lick soup that has just came out of the stove. The agony I felt when I realized my feet weren't straight told me that I was in trouble. I knew I had to do something because if not I would be left stranded on a mountain. I will never forget the moment I broke both of my ankles.…

If selected to be an RA, I anticipate balancing my course load and my position with residence life. I would have to drop my involvement with the Arts Village learning community and limit my participation with other organizations available on campus. I would prioritize my grades and my RA role first and foremost. If I have any additional time outside of these two commitments then I will indulge in other activities.…

Snoring, and fast asleep you are abruptly woken up by your annoying and loud alarm. You wipe your crusty yellow eyes, and you are finally awake but you don't want to leave the warm silky sheets. Finally the loud repetitive sound annoys you to no end and you flip the sheets off and open your cold phone. The bright screen makes your eyes squint back into your head. Blindly, you grab random clothes in your drawer and hope they match. The warmth from your bed is leaving your body so you throw your clothes on to try and keep the warm in. Since you don't wake up until the last minute all you have time for is to brush your teeth. The thick minty toothpaste caresses your teeth while you quickly move the bristles back and forth on your teeth. Then you throw your heavy backpack on filled with the homework that isn't finished and jump into your car.…

In 8th grade I became heavily involved in my schools STEM program who specialized in Medical Skills and partook in HOSA state competitions. All my life I had shown an intense liking for helping others therefore medicine seemed as my calling and once joining STEM my interests in the medical field grew deeper and deeper as well as my passion for leadership. So when the chance to compete in the HOSA competition came about I jumped at the chance to win an award for my school. I teamed up with 3 other girls and together we were to educate the public on careers within the medical system. We did careers from pediatrician to an aquatic vetenarian, my job was to keep creativity as well as knowledge flowing, I exhibited strong character, drive, detemanation, as well as patience during our project, these were extremely important in keeping the team focused as well as appreciated since we all contributed amazingly to the project and so it won second place! This experience taught me social skills as well as time management, it helped me become a more rounded person and strengthen my character. I was able to keep my team happy and restrained from being overbearing or bossy, which are not qualities a leader should possess. Another instance where a held a position of leadership was this year where I became the president of Alonso’s Anchor Club, where young ladies partake in various community service projects to better the world around them, the most recent event our girls took part in was the 5k Walk Against Breast Cancer with Dr. Lee right here in Tampa, Florida. With the massive help from our girls the team raised $6,000 all going towards the National Breast Cancer Foundation.…

The most important activity I have participated in throughout high school is ballet. I have been dancing for 13 years, and it will always be a passion of mine. I spend up to five days a week training and rehearsing at my dance studio, but because a majority of these classes occur immediately after school, I have had to prioritize my school involvement activities. For many years I had aspirations of becoming a professional ballet dancer, but after several injuries, to my feet, knees, and hips, I was forced to realize that my body could not keep up with the physical strain. After this conclusion, I took up another creative outlet that I have come to love with just as much passion: fine arts. Now I see a future for myself in this field. Because…

Right now, in my life, I am on the bandwagon of a hockey players dream. I have been playing this godly sport for over 15 years, and at this moment, I am currently playing hockey for the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks, who have encouraged me to attend Cuyahoga Community College better known as Tri-C, to take core classes. The Lumberjacks are part of the tier 3 American Hockey League that has guys from ages of 18 through 21, making it more precise and fast paced. Playing Jr. Hockey takes up more time than you can imagine, forcing me to take only two classes, Math and English. Both Math and English are on a Tuesday and Thursday for me, starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 2:15 p.m. After English class, the gym is the place to be and when I say “gym”, I mean the Strongsville Recreational Center. I feel like if I didn’t go to the gym on a daily basis I would be more aggravated and stressed out with…

My leadership role right now makes a difference, because I’m seen as a positive role model. I’m a program instructor and positive role model to dozens of kids enrolled in the Big Buddy Program. Most people believe that I’m just a babysitter, but I disagree, because I love every child that steps through that door and I do my best to let every child know that they’re loved and that I’ll always be here for them good or bad. As a role model I create a relationship with every child especially the ones in my class, because I want them to know that if something is wrong they can come to me. I truly stand by the saying no child left behind, because I feel that they won’t have the same opportunities as other children if they’re left behind. Whether it’s a game, homework, or even carpool, when I say carpool that means I wait till every last child is gone before I leave, because I truly care about those children and I want them to know that. One coworker asked me why do I still stay even though I’m not getting paid for it? I replied by saying It’s not about the money it’s apart of my job and I love the children as if they’re my own to leave them there even though there's 1 or 2 staff members left.…
