Personal Narrative: My Role As A Resident Assistant
As a resident assistant, “my community” is my floor and the thirty two residents who reside in my wing. For me, it is almost impossible to properly do my job without fulfilling the citizenship portion of the social change model. One of my most significant team experiences comes from working with my Co-Resident Advisor (RA) when one of our residents blacked out. One evening a resident came to me because her roommate was in the bathroom vomiting after a night out. My Co-RA and I took control of the situation by delegating the tasks that needed to get done and implementing the appropriate protocol. While my Co-RA called the paramedics, I attended to the student in distress and asked the resident about the events that had transpired earlier that evening. Then my Co-RA informed me that the paramedics were on the way while I recounted to her what the residents told me. Once the paramedics arrived, I went to escort them up while my Co-RA stayed with the residents. After the…

Sounds pretty similar to the agency I work for but it sounds like you had a lot more training then we did. Oddly, I was never asked or told to shadow anyone however, I did have a few nurses shadow me. I asked these nurses about it and they told me they weren’t getting paid for their time and I thought that was a little bizarre. I’m guessing that many agencies do not pay people for training after hearing your experience was similar to…

I was fortunate enough to discover that Yale PA program exceeded my expectations. As a clinical research assistant, I have had the pleasure to work with great clinicians (doctors and physician assistants alike) who have graduated from Yale Medical School and Yale PA program. During the summer I worked at a nursing home to gain some experience in the healthfield. Working as a certified nursing assistant really helped me grow and it is one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve had, it also was very challenging at times. As I said before I struggle with anxiety, but working as a nursing assistant pushed me to overcome some of the fears I had of communicating. I learned really quick when working in a nursing home you strongly need the ability to have good communication skills because without it you can’t communicate with the charge nurses, the residents or the other C.N.A’s. While medical care was available growing up, there were financial or situational periods where it was not necessarily accessible. I am from a single parent family. My mother moved in with my grandparents after her divorce and works two full time jobs to help provide for my brother, grandparents, and I. Since my father went to jail and my grandfather passed, we have had to make many adjustments financially. This was the case due to my father not providing payments for child support for the time he was incarcerated nor occasional months prior. There has also been a complication with my mother and I having our identity stolen, which has created additional problems when applying for governmental aid throughout my undergraduate years. I worked…
