Personal Narrative: My Experience With Football
It was the summer of 2013, and I was going to be a senior in high school, and like every other summer for the past 4 years, I spent the majority of my summer training for football. I didn’t hate it or else I would have quit the team and done something else with my life, but at the same time I felt as if we were given no break from football. It felt like it was an all year long sport. To me football didn’t just show me how to run the ball, how to catch a ball, and how to tackle. Football also gave me very many life lessons and experiences that I will never forget. Especially, one experience where I was racially profiled. Summer camp was finally here which was a football camp where my team and another team practiced and scrimmaged with each other for a whole week, and it was something everyone waited all summer to come. Although, I could not participate due to the fact that I was still healing from an injury that I had the previous season, at least that’s what my coach said because I was not yet approved by my doctor, but I knew I was completely healed and was as ready if not more ready than any other player. …show more content…
The camp started fairly early, so we didn’t have any parents to take us to the camp, since most of them worked, and I guess our team did not have sufficient funds to pay for a bus, so our coached trusted us that we could drive ourselves. Which is what we did, but we carpooled because driving with people is more fun than driving alone. Since, I was unable to drive due to my injury I got into the car of one of my teammates that played the offensive line. He drove a brown 1980’s impala that looked a lot like a lowrider, but he argued that it wasn’t. By the time we were ready to leave our car was full with two big Hispanic linemen, 2 receivers one was African American and the other was Hispanic, and then there was me an injured Hispanic running

It was a Friday night in mid August 1991. I was a noseguard and middle linebacker on defense, depending on the play. I also played right guard on the offensive line. This is the story of a night that could of well ended any hope of being an athlete, on any level, from this point on. I will be telling the story from the defensive side of the ball, due to that is where I was playing when I had five vertebrae, slightly, separated.…

We were just going through football practice and it just was the same as every other day. We would practice hard and go through all of the conditioning. We just recently played our first football game against Lovel. That consisted of two quarters, which the Freshman played the first two quarters and the Varsity played the second two quarters. At the end of the game, it was 45 to 17, it was not close at all. That was a good way to start off the Freshman year. We were going to play the Cody Broncs in a couple of weeks, but things changed very fast. One of my favorite quotes is “Sometimes it’s the Journey that teaches you about your destination.” (Drake). That Sunday morning after playing Lovel everything in my world was flipped upside down.…

I will be honest and admit that prior to formulating thoughts to jot down in preparation of writing this personal essay; I thought the most devastating result of having to attend summer school was that I was automatically ineligible to participate in football. I was not allowed to attend practice or to join the team for the annual trip to the Edinburgh campus where players honed their skills and bonded as men. I now realize and accept the fact that my behavior placed a heavy financial burden on my family’s finances. Summer school is not cheap! .…

I would go to the football field and go into the box announcers seat with a crossbow, bottle of water, protein bar, boards and a walkie talkie to respond to the other look outs. I would hide out in the box and since zombies are slow it would take them quite a long time to get to but when they do my look outs will take them out but if some pass by or I lose a person I can shoot them from my perfect view in the box from the field they are on and once all of them have been taken out I will call my crew together announce over the speaker we are safe and then call in on my walkie talkie the helicopter get my crew and head to the white house for our medals of honor for defeating our zombie…

Eighth grade year, gym class, flag football. I remember this day like it was yesterday. I had a fuming hatred for the gym teachers and their actions toward these pre-pubescent kids who take everything a little too personally, but with these rude teachers each and every reaction from each and every kid was appropriate. The only way I could describe these teachers is 40 year olds who find joy in making 13 year olds miserable. So, it all began when the flag football unit started. I wasn’t afraid of the evil humans we called gym teachers; I spoke my mind. Football was usually the last unit every year and every year the girls had to relearn how to play football, while the boys got to go play outside right away without an ounce of review. Because I am me, this wasn’t going to fly.…

My life has revolved around soccer since I was four years old. My whole family was born into the sport and I’m so thankful that I have the support from my family and friends to continue to follow my dream in playing college soccer. I believe my life would not be the same without participating in the sport I love and playing with the people I grew up with. I wouldn’t have met half the people I know now. All my teammate’s families that treat me like their family would have been just imaginary. I wouldn’t have a second family to fall back on when I need. Soccer had made me for who I am. The reason I’m so competed and driven is because of the game. Soccer has helped me become a responsible hardworking young adult that doesn’t like to fail. My never-quit…

8:01 AM, I’ve got just enough time to finish the last question on my history homework before the first bell rings. I was weaving my way through the crowd on my way to the library when my friend Josh interrupted my plan. He dragged me over to him saying, “Ty! Ty! I’ve got to tell you something.” Josh explained that he wanted me to join the Baseball team because of the new coach that signed up for the job. Immediately I interrupted saying, “There is a new coach?”. Josh explained that the coach was from a team that went to the state championship a couple years back. He thinks the new coach really going to really help me if I join, because I was not the “best” player last year. “Bzzzzzz” the bell was ringing for class. As I was walking toward first…

It was the first day of summer workouts and we had just got done stretching, we were getting ready to go with our individual coaches. When we were trying to work on inside run game and we needed a full back. I was a pretty big running back and not as fast as some of the others so all of the other players were telling me to play full back. I got mad and didn’t like being told to go to full back so I said “No”. The other guys were saying “you’re way too slow to play running back” and “You have never even played running back why would you try now”, I just took it all in and didn’t say anything. I continued to play running back and try and prove them wrong.…

It was the day that most freshmen dread, cuts day. There were many of us trying out for the JV baseball team- more people than there were positions. I could see it, I would be starting catcher on the JV baseball team. I had made it passed the first two weeks of tryouts and I was so confident that I was going to make it. That was, until on that last day of tryouts when the two coaches pulled me out of a drill and told me they wanted to talk to me.…

Junior year was here and I hadn’t played in a single game. While at soccer practice, yes I still attended even though I was on crutches and couldn’t play, my mom called me to tell me the results of it my injury. No one had thought it was my Anterior Cruciate Ligament, but it was. It had been completely torn in half and I needed surgery for it to be repaired. He had already put in my name and date for the surgery and everything. I felt like I was paralyzed from the head down. I couldn’t help but feel so torn up about not being able to play the whole season. I decided after the surgery I would try my hardest to recover and build my self better than what I was. I went to physical therapy every day I needed to and finished…

The team got together the next week for the yearly season ending party. I walked into my coaches house with guilt still hanging on my shoulders. To my surprise though, no one seemed to be mad at me, even when I had lost us the game, and they had to be upset about not winning the championship title. When our captain had started to organize teams for a little kick-around session, I realized why no one was disappointed at me, or in general for that matter. It was possibly the pressure of winning or the excitement that I might finally live up to my sister’s standards, but somewhere along the way I had forgotten why my teammates and I played soccer in the first place. Although it would have been great, it wasn’t to gain a tournament title or win the game. It was because we all shared the love of the game. I didn’t need to receive a trophy or even come out with an underdog win to have fun playing soccer with some of my closest friends, but apparently I needed to freeze up to remember…

It tore at me emotionally. I had never loved a sport so much; however, this had not been the story of my entire life. In fact, prior to this junior season I had hated football. I hated football so much my freshman year that I choose to quit sophomore year and was barely convinced to come back junior year. It wasn’t until the first day of practice, however, that I realized what a mistake had been to quit. I missed one year’s worth of my favorite activity in the entire world. And now, because of my legs, I was basically missing a second…
