Before Marvin’s game his dad, Mr. Whalen, asked Marvin if he wanted a ride down to the school and Marvin then replied with “No. Thanks, Dad, but no. It’ll do me good to run down there.” (435) This act shows how Marvin is not lazy and knows how to prepare for the game. In addition to warming up he rests, he also knows what to eat and how much. Mrs. Whalen was nervous that her husband, Mr. Whalen, would end up getting caught in the excitement of the game. He promised her that he wouldn’t. When they got to the game, Mr. Whalen eyed the big center before the game started. During the game the big center would not stop fouling Marvin and, “again the big center fouled Marvin.” (439) This act could cause Marvin to get seriously injured, but instead he ignores it and takes his shots. The big center’s dad was speaking harshly about Marvin and saying Marvin should get called instead of his son, Guido. Ironically Mr. Whalen, “who talked long and seriously to Marvin about sportsmanship,” (433) ends up getting into a brawl at one of Marvin’s basketball game over this. Right before this had happened Mr. Whalen’s wife told him that he should go take a smoke because he was getting too excited, and she was trying to help him relax. Unfortunately Guido’s dad caught him at the wrong time. At the end of the fight the principle talked…

After a long, weary day of work on a Sunday, I always look forward to entering the sports room of the house. Upon leaving work, I rush to my comfortable home. Due to the air conditioner being on all the time , I open the door and feel a cool breeze. I get under the warm , cozy covers and look at the patterns of navy blue and white colors on the wall reminding me of the ocean tides at sunset. Since I like the temperature in the sports room being on a low setting, I also like to drink a cold, refreshing soda. When I turn on my seventy-inch flat screen television, I always change the channel to Sunday Night Football. Watching the Dallas Cowboys is a priority for me on Sunday nights. The thrill of my favorite National American Football team scoring…

Ever since my freshmen year of high school, football has been the only thing that has mattered to me. I was given the opportunity to dress varsity as a freshman and being around that atmosphere, being on a successful team was intoxicating, especially to me at such a young age. I loved every minute of it, and I knew I wanted to be the one out on the field making the plays I watched that whole year. I made it my goal from that year on, I was going to give everything it took over the next three years in order to be the best football player possible.…

The scent of popcorn wafts over the peeling red walls of the ancient gym. Fluorescent lights blind me as I turn to glance over at the creaky old bleachers. The shuffles and murmurs of parents fill the sticky air while they come in. Clad in itchy mesh jerseys that boasted a large spur on the front hung over the equally uncomfortable shorts that resembled the jet black of my jersey, I block out the cheers of the crowd while attempting to perfect my form. Swish! The basketball floats through the air, gliding perfectly, hurdling through the air into the net. The referee blows the whistle. It’s time.…

Many people I know have learned many life lessons while playing the sport of football. Vince Lombardi, the Green Bay Packers former coach, has a quote that no sports editorial can disagree with. I survive by this quote every single day of my life. The quote says “Football is a great deal like life in that it teaches that work, sacrifice, perseverance, competitive drive, selflessness and respect for authority is the price that each and every one of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” - Vince Lombardi…
