Personal Narrative: I Believe In M & M
I believe in M&M’s. Yes, you read that right… M&M’s. I don’t believe in them because they are my favorite candy or because I love separating them by color, no. I believe in them because the first thing that comes to mind is bowls around my that comes to mind is my lovely Irish Nana, Mary Shannon- Leary because she use to have bowls of M&M’s all around her house, that I according to my grandmother and mother, “I could never keep my hands out of.” In January of 2005, when I was 3 years old, heaven received a new angel. She passed away from heart failure at the age of 85. My family always talks about how amazing of a woman that she was. Some of the time they talk about how much her and I are alike. I know when I am in tough situations that she is by my side guiding me through and helping me. She was an incredible woman and I was not given the chance to know her. She is one of the most religious women in my life. She attended church every day and when she couldn’t make it to church, the priest would go to her home and preach to her. Thanksgiving and Christmas were her favorite holidays because those were times where our whole family, no matter where they were, would come down and enjoy a home cooked meal, made by her. Family is something that means the …show more content…
Her favorite family gathering by far, was the family Angel’s baseball game. Every summer, the whole family would all gather for a potluck and tailgate under the big A at Angel’s stadium. We always had blocked seats inside, so then we could all go out and watch the game together as a family. She also loved golf. It was not so much of a family event, so I don’t know much about. All these traditions still are continuing to this day: Christmas as a family, the summer Angel’s game, and a homemade Thanksgiving meal. She will forever be remembered in our hearts as the mom, grandmother, and great grandmother as the one with M&M’s all

I have left for extended periods for professional or academic ventures in the past but Vanessa and I both are deeply rooted in my parent’s home. Between December of 2008 and July of 2009 Vanessa lost a grandmother, two great grandmothers and a great grandfather. She was blessed with seven years of her life in which she was able to get to know the generation of people that she had come from. In 2005 her father moved in with his elderly mother and grandmother after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer; shortly thereafter my maternal grandfather began to rapidly deteriorate, physically and mentally, at which time he moved in with us. Vanessa gained a great respect for the elderly as well as life experiences and knowledge one can only gain by exposure to older generations; however, these blessings came with lessons in illness and death and the real life challenge of coping with the sadness of end of life deterioration and the loss of loved ones. Vanessa understood that death was the inevitable end to life in the flesh, but she also understood that her loved ones were starting a new life in heaven. Instead of displaying exclusively classic signs of grief that would normally be seen in a child her age under the circumstances, she approached coping with a bitter sweet perspective that…

A lasting impression; that is much more than anyone else has ever accomplished. She would write me cute letters almost every day, some saying little as “have a good day pumpkin face.” She would call my pumpkin face because my face when I first woke up in the morning was priceless she said. Anyways I still keep all the letters in a box in my closet. I was really too young to understand a lot of the things she talked to me about, but I think it just comforted her to tell me what she was thinking, because she knew I would always listen intently. When I finally became of qualifying age, she asked me to certify for CPR with her. She was always looking for some way to help people. First and foremost, my mom has taught me to be happy and true to myself because I can never not face myself, and the choices I make. When I grow up, I hope I can be just like her, as I thought when I was a little girl and still think until this…

I believe in love. I believe that love is painful. Love is not when your “lover” walks by and you feel butterflies in your stomach. That is not love, love is the wrenching pain in your heart. The pain you fear will kill you. The unbearable pain, day and night, hour after hour, minute after minute, second after second, until it is done. gone. That is love. Not hugs and kisses, not love songs or love poems. Love is the devil, mean,, cold hearted. That is love.…

My mom and I had a close relationship in which we told each other everything, watched our favorite television show “Gilmore Girls” together and went on numerous exciting road trips. Especially after she was diagnosed we made sure to fill every single day with activities just like these. We made the most out of the amount of time we were blessed with. It was frustrating when I had to finally witness my mother take her last few breaths because I knew that there was nothing in my power that I could do to preserve her life. I still miss her to immeasurable amounts, but it hurts less and less each day as my grief is slowly being replaced with fond memories.…
