Personal Narrative: High School Marching Band
With a wide spread of my arms and a clench of my fist, the last notes of Panic! at the Disco's song, "Victorious" came to an end. As I called the band to attention and to march off the football field, I knew the marching season for the Mead High School Marching Band was coming to an end after another year. I remember feeling jittery and excited despite the fact that I was composed before our eight minute marching show began. I hopped off of my podium, used my shaky hands to disassemble the platform, and exited the field to catch up with the band. Our performance at the St Vrain School District Band Night marked the end to my high school marching band career that started just four years prior.

When I first began band, during the summer before my freshmen year, I was very introverted and not used to being surrounded by so many great musicians. I was petrified to play loudly in front of others and stuck to hanging out with my fellow freshmen band members. As the year began to

During my junior year I was the section leader for the Alto Saxophones, and I went on to become drum major the next year. I attended a drum major camp to learn how to correctly and efficiently lead the band. Along with the help of the section leaders and the other drum major, we lead the band to learn more sets and music than we had ever done in the past. By the end the that performance at the SVVSD Band Night we had practiced the non-stop eight minutes of music more than some would have liked to. No matter how well we performed, I was happy to have seen the band come so far since the beginning. The band has given me so much since my first day of camp freshmen year. I have come out of my shell, and found peace from everyday stress as well as a new family to rely on. When I joined the band after that last performance, I was so grateful for the opportunity to have been drum major and I knew that we were

It took us hard work over the summer with struggles of band members' instrument being out of pitch or off timing etc. Although, it was all worth it until we heard the words from the announcer at the area competition that we can move forward state. I can remember people next me cheering and crying. In fact, this band of ours has not been in this type of event in over 33 years and it is not just significant to me but also to the band and people part of it at that time. What I have learned from this experience that with hard work pays with the time spent on .…

When I drum I lose track of time, the different types of rudiments put together in all different orders makes me happy. When I try to get faster at drumming I play to all sorts of songs. I’ll get lost for hours drumming. Over time I hope to join some of the best marching groups in DCI and WGI. I hope to join groups like Matrix, Phantom Regiment, or Blue Coats. When I want to learn more I’ll ask people like Mr.Reynolds or Dave our percussion instructors. My favorite part about drumming is how with the right touch you can make a bunch of loud noises and crashes become into beautiful music. I would like to learn how to play the actual drum set instead of just the marching snare. Over my marching band career I played lot of different pieces and…

Marching band is analogous to a machine. All of the components must properly function in order to complete a certain task. Therefore, each member should possess dedication in order to produce a triumphant show and capture the audience’s attention. If one member fails, the whole organization collapses. Through these experiences, I learned that determination and dedication contributes to a successful lifestyle. Otherwise, dreams could never exist.…

I served as a Drum Major for my school's marching band in my senior year of high school. During that time, I worked some of the qualities needed to be a good music director, such as my conducting, my ability to focus for a long time, and how to stay calm in stressful situations. The summer before my sophomore year I picked up the piccolo for marching, and later used in the concert setting. As well as the piccolo, the summer before my senior year I learned how to play the saxophone. These two experiences allowed me to put myself back into the beginner mentality and build myself up. Additionally, I participated in honors bands in which I learned how to comprehend music at an even faster…

I was a part of the Newnan High School Marching Band my tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade year. It was a great experience. The Newnan High School Band became like a second family, and the band room was my home away from home. As it got closer to my senior year, I started wondering who was going to get the title of clarinet section leader my last year of marching band. I felt like I would be the one for the job. When they finally informed us that leadership applications were available, I was excited to get my application. I wrote an essay and prepared for my interview. I knew I had the qualities they were expecting in a section leader. I was kind to others, hardworking, friendly, helpful, understanding, and approachable. I anxiously anticipated…

Although last year I was not given the position of Drum Major, I was awarded the title of “Low Voice Section Leader.” Being named section leader made me feel so honored, and I was ecstatic to be in the position. As a section leader, I truly experienced what it is like to be a leader in a marching band. Although it is difficult, it is definitely rewarding. Throughout the marching band season, people often approached me for advice and help, and I was delighted to be able to assist different people and see how much they improved with my aid and…

As for character of what I would bring to the band, I am laid back and easy going but I can be very strict when I need to. Whenever we aren’t doing something I usually chat or goof off, but when it’s time to begin, it’s time to settle down, so I center my focus and get right to work trying to get everyone to fall into line. I am very dedicated to music and band so there wouldn’t have to be any worries with my responsibilities for the band. Also, I don’t play any sports or do anything besides choir and band all year with the exception of musical in the spring and diff and AP…

Today, I was discovering garage band on my phone and looking at different loops and trying to figure out how to use everything. So far, garage band is not very difficult to use, but I find it a little limited on the phone, but I don't have a lap top to use, but I am still figuring that out.garage band is only on apple. Due to the fact, that I am a beginner I am definitely going to stick to using garage band, because I do like how it works because it's simple. The first time I was ever daunted sitting at a drum kit, was at my first gig with my high school jazz ensemble during my freshman year. It was the night of the Presidents Circle Dinner, an event dedicated to the individuals who donated a substantial amount of money to my school. All the people I had to impress. Not only was I new to playing in front of a crowd but I was also new to playing jazz itself. During the performance of C Jam Blues, the band director pointed at me, hinting that I, the second string drummer, would be taking the next solo. The solo I played that night was the worst bit of drumming I have ever done. After that performance, i realized that the road ahead of me was going to be long and hard.…

Not only do I try to accomplish these events in the band, but I am also a leader of the school. This year is my ninth year of being a cheerleader and it has taught me a lot about respect. I understand that people do not consider cheerleading a sport, but they do not take into their consideration the hard work we put into everything we do. This also relates to the band because it is not known as a competitive sport, but we work just as hard in our job and perfecting performances, just as much as any athlete. Nine years of the same activity takes lots of endurance and dedication into a certain passion, and I have learned over the years to have this.…

This year, my first year in Color Guard and Marching Band, I’ve learned discipline and what it means to be a part of something bigger than me. Working with the other girls on guard, we work as a team to learn our routines and how to stay in sync with our flags which takes a lot of hard work and repetition. During our long, strenuous rehearsals, it is important to stay focused and pay attention to directions. By setting an example for the younger members, I hope to show them what it takes to be successful in what we do, because it cannot be done without a huge amount of commitment and pride to represent West and our Marching Band program.…

A light sweat trickled down my back as the sun’s rays were beating down on me harshly when Alexa and I arrived at Warner’s Stadium. It was the first football game of the season and I was here helping out the band in the concession stands. For the past few weeks, I have been trying to get Alexa to become a part of the marching lions with her siblings but she keeps on stubbornly refusing. I have brought her with me to talk to some of the members in the band, see how much fun they have, and how close they are to one another. Hopefully we can convince Alexa to join the band tonight.…

One of the most repetitive challenges I’ve faced in my life has to do with marching band. Every year my high schools’ marching has a state assessment where we are evaluated on how well we perform and understand our show. We have always shot for the highest rating of superior which requires dedication and hundreds of hours of practice. One of the hardest parts is getting the freshmen to fully understand the concept of marching band. It has also always been a struggle to get our show to the superior rating. We usually don’t get the show good enough to be considered superior until the actual performance day. That day is always the most stressful day of the season. It determines if our nearly two-hundred hours of practice pays off. By doing marching…

I participated in a combined middle/high school band since seventh grade, which includes marching and concert seasons. I have been the flute section leader starting in eighth grade until the present. As a senior, I became the drum major. When the band director wasn’t able to, I led the band in afterschool practices with the other drum major. Through an audition process, I was selected to participate in All-District band for three years. Every year of high school, I have prepared and performed a flute solo on the District level. As a freshman, I received a one rating at the district and state level.…

The band director has a very direct teaching philosophy; he would explain lessons and then send us off on our own letting us make mistakes as a way of truly understanding the material. This teacher, Mr. Jackson, believes that though playing and learning music students gain essential skills that no other subject can provide. To say the least, at the end of my high school career I witnessed how right he was, through music I learned the value of teamwork, discipline but, most importantly, I learned the true value of perseverance. Although learning music was never an easy task, I experimented and trial tested every possible rhythm, went out of my comfort zone and experienced some hard times as I tried to master the material. Just like any other performing arts, music pushed me to my limits but, I gained so much from the experiences. First hand I experienced how the performing arts may appear at first sight difficult, impossible, and even intimidating. Therefore, with the help of my previous knowledge on the arts I want to aid my students in feeling comfortable and going on and tackling the unknown even if the have no idea where they are going. I believe that as an art educator I have to open the eyes of my students and demonstrate to them the value of perseverance when making art and continuing their process as they find and fall over new obstacles…
