High School Band Experience
I participated in a combined middle/high school band since seventh grade, which includes marching and concert seasons. I have been the flute section leader starting in eighth grade until the present. As a senior, I became the drum major. When the band director wasn’t able to, I led the band in afterschool practices with the other drum major. Through an audition process, I was selected to participate in All-District band for three years. Every year of high school, I have prepared and performed a flute solo on the District level. As a freshman, I received a one rating at the district and state level.

We meet with our groups once a month and discuss topics such as peer pressure, responsibility, and bullying. I have participated in the program for the past two years. In addition, this year I help the counselor form the groups and plan the meetings.
Missouri has an A+ tutoring program which I am a part of. I tutor students in an eighth grade math class, but I focus on helping a specific girl who struggles with her confidence in math. I have enjoyed watching her gain more confidence in her math as I work with her. When all of her homework is done we talk about her life, including her personal struggles and dreams.
My favorite opportunity to be a leader is at LDS girl’s camp as a YCL. For a whole week, I had the opportunity to serve the girls I was in charge of. I made sure they were where they were supposed to be on time, led devotionals with them, taught them certification, and simply had fun with them. I have learned through this experience and others that when I lead and serve, it blesses me more than those I am supposed to be serving. I have learned more about myself and what I am capable of. I have been taught by those whom I serve. I have also learned how precious each one of our Heavenly Father’s children are to

Leadership is a lifestyle, not a role one adopts. Leadership requires strength and power, but also the ability to empathize and recognize others' needs. As a high school student, I have had many opportunities to be a leader, whether it be through clubs, group projects, or extracurricular activities. During my Junior year, I assistant directed the play Steel Magnolias under the eye of my drama teacher as well as a college student director. This role allowed me to learn the ropes of directing as well as take care of the six girls cast in the show. I adapted the role of the "stage mom," making sure every hair was curled to perfection and every prop was in its place, as well as ensuring their lines were memorized and their staging was proper. I…

    How FFA Changed My Life

Year after year, I walk through the Fort Worth Stock Show areas such as holding pins, arenas, and the fairgrounds. Through the journeys, I gain an appreciation for all the hard work and dedication that these people have put into the fair and how it is changing people's lives. Going back to freshman year, like it was yesterday, I remember how I did not want to be a part of FFA and was forced to take an agriculture class. What I didn't realize was how wrong I was about agriculture classes and FFA. After the second day, I quickly immersed myself in FFA after seeing all it offered to me.…

I served as a Drum Major for my school's marching band in my senior year of high school. During that time, I worked some of the qualities needed to be a good music director, such as my conducting, my ability to focus for a long time, and how to stay calm in stressful situations. The summer before my sophomore year I picked up the piccolo for marching, and later used in the concert setting. As well as the piccolo, the summer before my senior year I learned how to play the saxophone. These two experiences allowed me to put myself back into the beginner mentality and build myself up. Additionally, I participated in honors bands in which I learned how to comprehend music at an even faster…

I am a leader. I have all the qualities that make a great leader, but I was not born this way.Experiences and how someone reacts to those experiences are what truly make a leader. One of the most influential experiences I have gone through is called the Lebanon High School Marching Band. I am certain that I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for marching band. Before coming to high school I already had leadership qualities, but band helped bring all those great qualities together and helped me get past my two major flaws: my lack of self-confidence and the fact that I was probably one of the shyest people you would EVER meet. When I joined marching band, I spent most of my waking hours sweating and suffering alongside wonderful people that I longed to…

There is the important question of, “What qualities makes you a worthy option over the others competing?” A good place to start is my devotedness to the band program. This year, I played in the following bands: Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Band, Winter Percussion, Wind Ensemble (occasionally). While I am obviously not the best in the school at my instruments, I definitely have a connection to the band program that few others have considering the amount of time I put into it. Another quality I would like to mention is my willingness to learn. I want the band program to excel next year, and I am up for any challenge that may come my way. That’s why I’m learning multiple different conducting styles (amongst other reasons), as I want to be able to adeptly conduct anything you choose for the band next year. I also have a lot of interest in conducting for everyday band classes, as, based off of the little experience I have conducting for Symphonic Band, it seems like a lot of fun. Thirdly, I have connections, particularly in the sense of getting volunteers to do any big projects that may arise. I happen to be a triplet, so let’s just say I know a large number of teenage boys who would be willing to come in early to set up for an event, move (or maybe even build) props, copy papers, etc. Any odd jobs that would take extra time to do, I and a few others of my choosing can do for you. Of course, there will always be…

I am a great leader and throughout my high school career I have taken every opportunity I could to display this. For three out of my four years I have participated as a Muskoka Woods Leader. This required me to spend a week at a summer camp at which I would lead a group of grade 7s through a series of fun activities. Being a leader at this camp wasn't always fun and games though. I had encountered many situations with the grade 7s in which I would have to improvise and apply my knowledge of leadership to sort out. For example, during one of our games we would play, there was a little boy who was sitting off on the side not participating. I went over to talk to the boy to find out what was wrong. When I found out that he didn't understand how to play the game I knew exactly how to fix it. I brought him over to a corner and me and him played our own little one on one version of the game. I taught him how to play and I played with him until he was finally ready to join the other grade 7s. As well as being a Muskoka Leader, in my grade 11 year, I was a Link Leader for my high school. This was different from being a Muskoka Leader because this time I was working with grade 9 students who were entering high school. Throughout the year I worked with the grade 9s giving them secret tips and tricks about how they could survive their freshman year of high…

In seventh grade, my brother joined the middle school band. This was the start of a new beginning for me. My perspective of others started to broaden slightly by being exposed to some band members who were my brother’s friends. Three years later, when I entered seventh grade, I decided to join the middle school band and play the trumpet. I finally was a part of the group that I had been mocking for years. This was a large step for me. I was about to embark on a tremendous journey that would completely change my perspective on life. I would start to realize, as I became closer to the other members, that band students are not all the geeks that they are made out to be. While some members are a little quirky and some of the things that I did in band were a little weird, I truly discovered all of the great things that band has to offer. As I soon came to realize, members of marching bands gain valuable character traits, leadership skills, and academic benefits that help them excel in…
