Personal Narrative: Early Childhood Professional
10'000 hours, WOW! When thinking of these hours it seems like an such a long time doesn't it? It seems as if it will take your entire life to finally reach these hours. However, in all reality it will only take you a max of 10 years if you are a hard worker, dedicated and passionate at what you do. I personally do not think I have yet to reach these hours as an Early Childhood Professional. Although, I believe I have yet to reach these hours I am certain that if I do the math I will either be at 10'000 hours or somewhere close to it. The reason being because I have been in my profession for a little over 7 years. I started out as a Education Aide (five years) working 30 hours a week and worked my way up to Assistant Teacher (one year) and Head

As a child protective services worker, when interacting with a hostile, resistant or non -voluntary client, I would use several techniques to build rapport and engage the client in working with the agency. Being a social worker for the last ten years, and having four years of direct experience in child protect services, I have come across many reluctant clients. I learned very quickly that rapport is the foundation to any service provider in the social work field. Upon a first visit with a client, one needs to remember that you do not know them any more than they know you. It is important to be empathetic and understand that the client has just had a stranger come into their home and take away their child/children. You, are also a stranger coming into their home, and need to respect their home, as well as, the situation they are experiencing. It is very common to see a hostile and/or resistant client in the beginning of services.…

I have volunteered at Woodland Park After School Care Program, where I was a counselor for kindergarten to 2nd graders. During my time as a volunteer, I helped children with their reading homework. I helped them read stories and answer wh- questions according to the story. I have worked at a summer camp in the summer of 2015 for two months. From the morning until the noon, I was a counselor for children in 5th grade to 8th grade. My mornings consisted playing a sport with the children and then arts and crafts. From the noon until the end of camp I was a one-on-one counselor for a child with Autism. I was responsible for planning out her afternoons specifically for her. I made sure she had time to play in the playground, sandbox (which she loved),…

My early literacy experience was not a big of a deal for me at an early age. When I was in school I always took a reading and writing course with a grain of salt, it was just one more class on my schedule. Literature did not really appeal to me in my early experience. I always think that why do I need to take a literature course in order for me to succeed in the future.…

I often ask myself what my purpose is in life; am I here to help others or to write a book? Maybe to sing the most somber song, but then again I do have a dreadful voice. One thing that has always caught my attention was how prodigious the human body is, so I wanted to follow a career in the health and science field. I came to admire dentists because of the experiences I had with people in the particular field. Some skills I have to help me prosper are my analytical thinking and how I relate and connect with others. My ultimate goal is to help people feel and look better, a happy smile can make a difference.…

My husband Brett and I, were not able to have children of our own. So we contacted the best adoption agency around us, through this agency we now have two beautiful children. Six year old Joseph Louis and three year old Poppy Jean. Joseph is a “slow to warm up” (Mannis 2014) child and though we are working on ways to improve this we are so blessed to have two healthy children. I know that Joseph is a “slow to warm up baby” because he is very loving and very adventurous but it takes him a little bit of time before he is comfortable, he also will use me as a secure base. Times have been very hard especially with…

My mom taught me to live by the Golden Rule; do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I have lived by this rule all my life. I have never had a problem getting along with others and treating them with respect until I started my nursing career as an LPN. I started working at the local hospital, working night shift. I really enjoyed going into work, helping the patients with their needs. I enjoyed visiting with them and finding out what would make their stay better. Then one day the supervising nurse in charge of the floor took me aside and told me to stop visiting with the patients. I was thinking to myself okay there has got to be a good reason behind this. She told me the patients need their sleep and they don’t need me to visit with them and keep them awake.…

The lecture last week gave me a clearer understanding as to why parents might deny services that could help their children with disabilities. Instead of just focusing on the emotional aspect of it, I was able to see the logical side of such a tremendous decision. Concerning the emotional side, I would initially be very upset, confused and even a bit angry. But since I am an ECI professional, I would set aside my own personal judgments and look for ways to help the family out any way I can. I would think of possible reasons why they have denied the services. Understanding a situation best I can, will help me figure out compromises and solutions. Maybe there are money problems, time constraints, or underestimating the issue, for example.…

I began working when I was 14. My first babysitting job was for my newly divorced neighbor with a one month old baby named Alexa. I loved being able to give Alexa's mother, Brianna, some time to go out with her friends and relax. However, Alexa was just the tip of the iceberg for my career as a babysitter. Since then I have nannied and babysat for a variety of families ranging from ages 2 weeks to 14 years old. During the summer of 2016 I began nannying for a family with two middle school girls. I worked Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm. Throughout the course of the summer I encountered many adult situations that have made me grow as an individual. Between calling AAA to come fix my tire that had a massive chunk of metal wedged in it to breaking…

Growing up as a little kid I really didn’t have any toys or friends to play with. My dad works in construction, I asked him one day if he could built me a little play house for me, he told me that he would think about it. Until the next day he brought in some wood, nails, paint… so on and so forth to build the house. Now, this house was like no Barbie house, this house was a life size house for a little kid. I remember helping my dad drawing and building it to make it looked all pretty. The house look like a real house, it had a door with a door knob, and a window. The house could even fit in my blue chair with letters on it so I can go inside, sit down and eat my snacks in there. I loved it so much I would usually take my naps in there.…

When I was 16 years old, my grandma opened her very own government approved child care service. I decided that I wanted to help her but it was mainly because the 2 girls we had were really nice and polite. We had a girl who had just started the second grade and her sister, who was a middle school special ed student. I dedicated countless volunteer hours to helping them with their homework, creating learning activities and birthday parties for them . In a blink of an eye, the daycare had 14 kids and we pretty much had them 20 hours a day for 5 days a week.…

To maintain professionalism, I focus on what I want to become: An Intentional Teacher. To be an intentional teacher, one must protect the confidentiality of his or her students and the program they are attending. It is important for an intentional teacher to present her/himself in a professional manner at all times. That includes being to work on time every day, dressing conservatively, possessing a positive attitude and work ethic and use good judgment when making decisions that pertain to the children in her/his care. One must be an advocate for the children in her/his care and their families. One must keep themselves updated on child care practices, research and other developments in the profession. Being an intentional teacher means you are a lifelong learner and anyone in the early childhood education field should continue their education and be informed on the latest practices.…
