Personal Narrative: Carlton
Teaching is sacrificial and it is a calling for those who have a servant’s heart. I am frequently reminded of a student in my Beginning Band class two decades ago. His name was Carlton and he was a special needs student in sixth grade. Carlton desperately wanted to learn to play the Baritone horn well enough that he could perform on the Spring Band Concert but band rehearsals were short and he needed more help. So, he and I agreed that he would skip recess and I would skip lunch a few times each week to practice together. Carlton played on that concert and him doing so was just as rewarding to me as it was to him.

It is challenging and refreshing to look back and seek to rediscover the roots of one’s career path. From my earliest recollections,

Our Director was Dr. Charles T. Menghini and his determined attitude and commitment to excellence was contagious. Becoming a student leader, I was afforded opportunities to teach my section along with other various small ensembles. I worked closely with our director in the preparation of music, organizing student events, and participating in student leadership training workshops. Valuable lessons were learned through partnering with other Band members, faculty, parents, and even the custodial staff as I worked side by side with Dr. Menghini. I quickly found my gift for incorporating the love of music and for leading people. By the middle of my sophomore year in high school I had decided to become a music …show more content…
I have nurtured their growth as both musicians and people. I have watched them continue to enjoy music and become leaders among their peers well past the time in my classroom. As students have graduated from Fort Osage, many have come back to our district and have enrolled their own children into the Beginning Band. Other graduates are now teaching music at high schools and universities. My greatest teaching accomplishment is the legacy of my teaching living on through these students. I have instilled in them the belief that regardless of their circumstances, they can be successful and make a difference in this

Our last observation this semester was with Rachel Pollard at Hartwood Elementary School. This school includes grades K-5. Mrs. Pollard is in a very unique situation, because she sees each of her classes for forty minutes twice a week. Since she has twice as much time with her students as compared to most other music teachers, her students are able to advance quickly with their musical skills. This benefit was very obvious through my observations. Mrs. Pollard’s lessons were well thought-out and she had clear objectives in mind for each activity. Everything she did served a purpose, including singing a song to move the students into a new seating arrangement and her “point checks” at the beginning of class.…

In an attempt to better understand what college is like, I recently interviewed Daniel Labonte, a music teacher in the Spruce Mountain school district. He is a music teacher at the elementary school, a chorus teacher at the middle school, and the music director for the high school drama program. Not only does he do this, but he also works outside of the school playing trombone for other musicals. He is fairly well known within the music community because of this.…

As a member of the music academy at Salem High School, I was always surrounded by intelligent and talented peers. I teach them how to use proper diction, proper posture and eye contact. I teach them how to be respectful. I teach them how to apply these skills to other areas of their lives. In the Summer of 2011, I was privileged to work with the children at Vacation Bible School. This included children from my church and members of the community who did not attend the church. I took reluctant kids from apprehensive parents and transformed them into excited, energetic, eager singers. I transferred my love of music to this group of 86 kids, who became motivated and inspired by my energy, innovation and gymnastic skills. Through the use of interactive signs and audience participation, I evoked in them a spirit of leadership while teaching good moral values. Each child wanted a chance to lead out in front with me. Parents were awed at the transformation in their kids after one week. My goal is to unlock the potential in…

As a member of nearly two years with Seminole, I have been able to experience an atmosphere of genuine love and acceptance that I now hope to further encourage and foster. This will be my sixth year as a part of the marching arts, during which I have had the privilege of playing and marching for two different ensembles, as well as maintaining leadership roles in both (leading two front ensembles and being relied on heavily at my place of prior attendance). With all the time I have dedicated to learning and plying my craft, I now seek to instill in others that same sense of wonder, amazement, and motivation that…

Our band directors would always be sure we had the utmost opportunities by always taking us to music festival each year to showcase our bands skills. Many other county’s programs do not take middle school groups, but Mr. Boyce Flener and Mr. Jason Ausbrooks always pushed us to be the best we could be; I sincerely thank each one of them for always…

Lastly, music has become something that has taught me the importance of leadership, teamwork and friendship. It taught me that leadership isn't about telling others what to do. Leadership is about helping others and being someone other look up to. Music helped me become friends with people I had never talked to before, making them now my best friend. It helped me create a harmony between each and every person in my choir to show our full…

However, my leadership roles did not cease after that. At the end of the 2015-2016 school year, I had gone through an audition process to become the Drum Major for the Liberty High School Marching Band. This process included: receiving signatures of nomination from peers, attending scheduled workshops teaching how to lead the band, a teaching evaluation, a parade route evaluation, submitting a formal application essay and a leadership questions form, receiving a letter of recommendation, and an…

The band has been an integral part of my life since I joined back in 7th grade. I’ve had several hobbies over the years, but band is one of the few activities that have sparked my interest. It has created an environment where my strengths can positively shine. Without band I’d have a much less impressive student life. The band program has given me most of the friends that I have today, and that is something I couldn’t replace. The band is by far the most important aspect of my high school career, and I really feel that it is a highly positive stepping stone in my life.…

Being a part of the Temple High School Band has greatly impacted my educational and life choices. Being involved in band has taught me how to have better time management, multitask, be reliable and be able to work great in a team. Being involved in band is a great way to enhance many personal skills. By having to go to sectionals and marching band rehearsals, it shows how flexible one must be in order to function well in an activity. Luckily for me, it worked out great since I normally go to sleep early. By having to wake up early and arrive at school, it has made me become more of a morning person. I am a very dedicated person who arrives at a timely manner to any and all things band related. I have made a good relationship with my directors…

I’ve also enjoyed dedicating part of every summer to improve my musical skills by attending various camps, including Longlake Camp for the Arts, Eastern U.S. Music Camp at Colgate University and Interlochen Camp for the Arts, where I was just invited to return on the basis of last summer’s performance. While I know that there may be others with comparable or better talent, my passion serves as the constant motivation for me in music as well as other aspects of my life. For example, being a dedicated Honor Roll student, taking weekly Temple classes and performing community service has been important and demanding as well. Managing these priorities has taught me a lot about tenacity, friendship and balance.…

Every “blue day” at the York High School begins with my block one class: Chorus. I cannot say that Chorus has been one of my favorite classes, or even a class a specifically liked, however I can say that I have learned lessons that I will worship forever. I realize that I have been given the opportunity to grow musically, but for me this class was much more. I often thought of this class as a course that was required, but when stories were shared, and observations were collected in my mind, I realized that this class was so much more. I learned the importance of trying new things and always giving myself the ability to grow.…

The interviewee, Professor Mark Corner, is a man who followed an unconventional career path: he did not have a career path nor did he want to. His career path can be described as organic, non- linear; he let his situations and opportunities veer him towards his current career. Accordingly, the definition of a career being an evolving sequence of a person’s work experiences over time is befitting to Corner, as his career involved continuity and change.…
