He has helped create the band into a flourishing spectacle that anyone and everyone in or who supports the band program should be proud of. Even though this is his first year of being an actual teacher instead of student teaching, he has become a part of our band family. He is one of the friendliest teachers at Cave City high school. He is young, at the age of only 23 as of the day I am writing this. I am only 17, so he is only 6 years older than I am. That could be a reason for him being considered a friend more or less. Poff has introduced me into the world of college life. He has discussed with me the pros and cons of each college that I was thinking about going to. I am still undecided in my Junior year of high school, but have now narrowed it down to 4 colleges out of an originally 20 with the help of Mr. Poff. We have also discussed about what Majors would be best suited towards me and my outlook on life. He’s helped me narrow it down to two different majors: Veterinary Medicine or Music Theory. Both would be difficult to master, he thinks that I have the knowledge and skills to make it happen. Mr. Poff encourages us to follow our dreams of what our futures will hold, but also helps us realise the truth of it all and how much woke must be put into it

I am writing concerning Tripp Moore, whom I have come to know throughout my years as the Flomaton High School “Hurricane” Marching Band drumline instructor. As Tripp’s instructor, it was a pleasure to get to know him. Tripp has been a great student of mine and it has been my pleasure of being able to teach him. He has some great qualities of a human being and qualities that you would love to see in a leader. Tripp’s hard work and his dedication to music helped him as he joined band and made awesome strides to be on the best percussionist. Tripp also dedicates his time to being a part of the Flomaton High School Jazz Band, and being the drummer at his church First Baptist Church of Flomaton, Alabama. He began his music career playing the piano, but “never did any of the lessons”, he said. He soon switched his focus to the bagpipes and found immense passion in both playing and teaching. “I love the sound it makes”, he said, “If I know I can create something beautiful, I chase mercilessly for it”. He now plays with the Naval Academy Pipes and Drums band and teaches newcomers, or “the babies”, as he puts it, how to play.…

I believe that I can accomplish any obstacle that stands in my way and I’m not going to let anything stop me. There have been numerous times this year and last year where I have been the leader and I have stepped up for “The Band” and “My Section” because of the love I have for it. For example: All the trombone “fanfares” and movements have been my ideas and I have collaborated my ideas with the other members of my section which have led to success during the football games. Another example is when the band was entered into the martin Luther king parade (2010) and Mr. Green needed people to stay after and develop a dance routine for the band with alumni and others. I was one of the volunteers to stay and help out which was a great idea because I was able to bond with the alumni and other older college students to get their advice and opinions for not only the dance routine but for my life. Another example is when the band was invited to perform for the faith world fundraiser (2010) and Mr. Green needed a student to be a “Fill-in” drum major for that day. I stayed after to volunteer and I was chosen and after that day I worked my butt off to help Corrine and assist her with the dancing for the performance which was a success for us and the band. Last year was my first year of…

My Jr High choir teacher, Mrs. Bradbury, was the most challenging teacher I have ever had. She would never cut the choir a break, and never stopped pushing us to be our best; “I can’t” was not acceptable to her. I hated her with every fiber of my being, and every time she spoke all I wanted to do was sew her lips together. It wasn’t until the beginning of ninth grade when I realized she was amazing. Once I let my guard down, we instantly connected. Recognizing how much I loved to sing and becoming one of the top singers in my choir was thanks to her. I started working for hours every day on my songs, staying late after class for help, and going to voice lessons. I excelled exponentially and Mrs. Bradbury noticed it.…

School always came first, without a doubt. But, I let the move get to me. I let change get to me, and that shouldn’t have been the case.Doing my best is what I should have kept doing, but that wasn’t what happened.. My uncle is the person that made me realize that. He’d always call to check up on me, making sure I was doing the best that I could without any excuses. He called one day and asked how I was doing in my new school, and I told him the truth. His response was nothing I was prepared for. I was used to him telling me how proud he was of me, and that I’m going to set out to be the greatest at what I want to become. But, this phone conversation was not anything I thought it would be.He said, “Even though I hoped this wouldn't happen, I knew it would.” What did that even mean? Did it mean he was rooting for my failure? That talk sparked something in me. It reignited my passion for success. I started to get my act together and refocus on my grades, and what I wanted in life. Slowly my grades started improving, with each semester slightly getting…

It was a beautiful summer day at the beginning of my senior year. Students were anxious to meet their teachers and begin the last year of their high school career. There were those excited to graduate that knew exactly what they wanted to do with their life. Then there were those like me who had no idea what college they would be attending the following year. I knew I wanted to go to college, but I had no idea which one I wanted to attend or what my major would be. After I arrived that morning, I walked into the crowded hallway of my 4A public school on my way to my first and hardest class, pre-calculus AP. I was one of the last ones to enter the classroom and had no other choice but to sit next to my ex-best friend. It was already a bad day. Once the bell rang, Mr. Rogers, an older teacher with gray hair and big circular glasses, stood in front of the classroom and began teaching our first lesson. Within five minutes of the lesson, I was already lost. Once he turned around to see if anyone had questions, I was the first one to raise my hand.…

Starting at eight years old, I always envisioned attending college and obtaining a degree that would allow me to accomplish what I want in life. Over time, I have faced many obstacles such as dyslexia, emotional trauma, and family challenges. All through these challenges, I never let anything deter me from my course of attending college. Despite being able to overcome obstacles, I have come to realize there are things in life that I have little to no control over. Now that I have had time to experience the joys, hard work, and endless opportunities that come with being a college student, I have come too far to let anything stop me from finishing this chapter of my life. In combination with my scholarships and work-study, as a college student with little money I rely partly on my parents to finance my education. Although my parents will continue to do all they can to help finance my education, their income stability is not guaranteed, my family…
