Personal Narrative: A Career As An American Airman
Ever since I was a child, I knew I was going to serve my country. My father and grandfather served one enlistment each in the Army and the Marines, respectively. They both went on to start families and work in factories, pursing the American dream. This heritage was passed on to me, and I am honored to serve as an American Airman. Now I am married, and we have two children. I know the importance of integrity because without it, I cannot succeed as a husband and father.
My objectives and desires for commissioning are to align my abilities with the mission of the Air Force. My strengths are leadership, critical thinking, and ingenuity. I have strived to lead since the beginning of my career, serving as an Airmen Leader in Technical Training

One day my dad was flying radio control airplanes and I got interested to fly them, so I asked my dad if I could ever fly like him, he said yes. He started to teach me how to fly airplanes. When I was catching on I learned new tricks, it's fun to do tricks, but sometimes I mess up. When I do crash my airplane there's always someone there so they help me fix it. Then i'm on my way flying again. One day my sister wanted to fly my plane and I didn't want here too, but my dad made me give it to her. She crashed it and I was not surprised because she can't really fly them. Then I got tired and watched my dad fly his airplane. I was always catching it and throwing it, it was so fun.…

Integrity is a character trait. It is the willingness to do what is right even when no one is looking. It is the "moral compass" the inner voice. . A person of integrity possesses moral courage and does what is right even if the personal cost is high. The drama; A Few Good Men and the poem; O Captain My Captain by Walt Whitman are two different genres with the same theme of integrity and loyalty. Loyalty is primarily a function of trust, and that trust is usually given if integrity is perceived in the object of one's trust. Although they have the same theme the themes use or way in which the theme portrayed in each artistic work is different. The diverse definitions of the themes loyalty and integrity are put into play in order to fit the different roles they presume in both artistic works.…

It would be an honor and a privilege to continue my service as a Surface Warfare Officer. I had the pleasure of being assigned to the USS Chung-Hoon during my senior Midshipman cruise. While on the Chung-Hoon, I was tasked with assuming the role of conning officer. I was held to the same expectation as my running mate; I was to have in-depth knowledge of the ship’s navigational capabilities, report for duty fully prepared to assume responsibilities, and, at all times, be diligent when working in unison with the different departments of the ship in order to assure safe navigation. Working with the officers and crew on the Chung-Hoon was the greatest lesson in leadership I experienced, and serves as the point in my life where I knew I was destined to be a warfighter. I know that as a Surface Warfare Officer,…

It was unusually cold on this morning of September 11th, 2001, and my alarm had just went off. The odd but needed 5 am. was when I woke up, because my flight was going to leave around 8:30 and I needed to be there on time. The reason I was flying to San Francisco was I was having a family reunion with my dad, my step-mom, and my step-brothers. So, I jumped in the shower quickly with joy and excitement. I hadn't seen my family in forever since I had gotten a job as the assistant of the manager in Ralph Lauren Headquarters. I had just gotten my hair dried as I heard my phone ring. It was dad, making sure that I was on my way. I talked to him for a few minutes and then hung up. I glanced at the clock and realized…

My heart was pounding. The next break point was two miles away and I was already breaking down. The soles of my feet were hurting because I brought the wrong type of shoes. I had been told to prepare myself physically for this backpacking trip, but I thought how hard can a weekend of backpacking be. So I let my ego and laziness take over me. As I look back at that moment, I realize that I was not physically ready for that trip. I also wasn’t mentally ready. I didn’t realize that there was a right way of packing a backpack; instead, I just tossed everything in the bag. I didn’t even ration the amount of food or clothes I would need. And this skewed planning paid back during the trip. Before I was down to the next breakpoint, I opened my backpack to get some water and darkness struck. My plastic bottle, lodged in the…

On the 30th day of September, in the year 1992, I was surgically removed from my mother and declared female. My mother gave me the first name Samantha, after her favorite vindictive soap opera character, Samantha Brady, from The Days of our Lives. Little did I know at that moment I was going to be sentenced to live with seven other siblings before I even turned 20. The worst part is estrogen flows through five of them. My mother is a Forensic Scientist and my father is a Physician’s Assistant in the U.S. Army. They make me very proud to be a part of a family that serves to keep this country free. I have lived in Germany, Texas, Missouri,…

It was about seven in the evening and I got a call from my friend, letting me know she and her grandmother had made it home. Her grandmother is in her 60’s, so there wasn’t much texting going between us. I’d been trying to catch up with her all day to interview her, but I guess she had a very busy weekend. I finally arrived to the house just ready to get the interview over with.…

Team work, flexibility, adaptability, awareness, planning, organization, communication and analytical proficiency are the skills I possess and will always continue to build upon as a Soldier. The challenge I strive for as a commissioned officer is that of leadership and command. I feel that my experience leading Soldiers as a non-commissioned officer will form the basis of success as an officer. I have assisted the development and execution of command decisions and feel well prepared to make and implement the difficult decisions. I want the mantle of leadership and the challenge greater responsibility. I strive to meet any goal and reach it no matter difficulty. Being here at Taylor still feels surreal to me. Waking up in my dorm every morning and comprehending that I am going to be here for the majority of the next four years is crazy and exciting. I have loved every part of my experience here at Taylor so far. Already in my time here at Taylor I have experienced many new firsts. I have experienced my first wing retreat, my first pick-a-date, my first Taylor sporting event, my first bro-sis event, my first Ivanhoes run, and many other exciting Taylor firsts. I have learned more names in three weeks than I thought was physically possible, and I have made more friends than I think I have had in my whole life. Getting to know all of the girls on my wing so well has probably been my favorite part of my Taylor experience so far. All of the Taylor firsts I have experienced wouldn’t be the same if I wasn’t getting to experience them with such a great group of girls.…

By consistently doing the right thing and showing no favoritism we improve ourselves, our fellow soldiers, and the Army as a whole. Integrity improves everyone by making sure that everyone can expect equal treatment and not fear a mistake or a supervisor’s mood. We improve ourselves by building pride in doing what is right and overcoming obstacles whether they be pear pressure or just fear. We also build a reputation that will last a lifetime and reinforce the personal courage to do what we feel is right. Our fellow soldiers are improved because they know what to expect and do not have to worry will I be destroyed because he was in a bad mood or will I get off easy because he likes me. Integrity also improves the moral of soldiers knowing that their fellow soldiers will do right thing and take care of each other no matter how hard that is. The Army is improved because the general character of soldiers is increased and we do not force good soldiers to quite or become bad soldiers because they grew fed-up with arbitrary and inconsistent decisions.…

My definition of integrity is: having respect in the rules of human code of conduct, governmental rules and in the Army's organization laws. Integrity means that we do the right thing even when no one is looking. Integrity is only one part of the 7 Army values. It is an important role in the values because if one does not have integrity they can not be trusted on in a time of need or when you are working side by side with them in every day work. What they say can not be taken on word alone. What they say and do will all ways be in question, whether it is a simple task as doing a police call on the building grounds you are working at or to the extreme of having a loaded weapon and out on patrol with you. Having integrity is a very important and once you have broken your trust with some one, you will lose some of you integrity with them. Integrity is something that is intangible and can only be measured on a person to person base. Trust and Integrity are intertwined and are hard to tell apart sometimes and they affect one another.…
