Loyalty and Integrity Integrity is a character trait. It is the willingness to do what is right even when no one is looking. It is the "moral compass" the inner voice. . A person of integrity possesses moral courage and does what is right even if the personal cost is high. The drama; A Few Good Men and the poem; O Captain My Captain by Walt Whitman are two different genres with the same theme of integrity and loyalty. Loyalty is primarily a function of trust, and that trust is usually given if integrity is perceived in the object of one's trust. Although they have the same theme the themes use or way in which the theme portrayed in each artistic work is different. The diverse definitions of the themes loyalty and integrity are put into play in order to fit the different roles they presume in both artistic works.

In A Few Good Men the loyalty and integrity are almost contradictory to each other. The young Navy officer/attorney has a history of being lazy and choosing play over work until a case comes p that challenges his "loyalty" and integrity. Cruise playing the young lawyer, finds evidence that could convict the officers that are training to convict the two marines for the murder. This questions Cruise's faith as an officer for doing what is not only morally right, but also his faith falters in the thought of going up against his commander in court. He feels he must obey the orders of a person of higher rank that he is supposed to trust, on the presumption that the orders are legally and morally

Imagine your whole city looks up to you. Everyone comes to you for advice, uses you as an example, you are the most popular of the popular at school. Well, what if one day as you are walking down the hall to your 5th-period class with your friends, you saw the weird kid that everyone made fun of tripped, causing his papers to fly into the air and fall like confetti? You have the choice of helping him, or not. If you help him you would lose all of the respect you have worked hard for and earned. If you do not help him nothing bad will happen, but you will live with knowing you could have done something but did not. What would you choose? This is where integrity comes into play. Atticus Finch from the novel To Kill a Mockingbird was in the same situation. He chooses to help. This is why Atticus’ most valuable virtue was his integrity.…

Integrity is a virtue that has always been around and it is an important characteristic to have. In the play, The Crucible, Tituba finally confesses to who all saw the devil. When she fessed up, Betty, Abigail and Parris all joined in and were being honest to Mr. Putnam. This started a whole other issue in now punishing those who encountered the devil. The virtue of integrity is still so present today in society. Integrity is to be honest about something even though it may hurt you. It is also doing the right thing even when no one is watching. In today’s society, people have to have integrity. This makes other people want to trust you when you have a trustworthy quality. Sadly, it is less common now but there are still people who are full of integrity and it is such a great thing.…

In the Navy we have an "Ethos" and part of it states, "integrity is the foundation of our conduct, respect for others is fundamental to our character, decisive leadership is crucial to our success". This mirrors in part with what Neher and Sandin (2007) state, "the person who has integrity or good character relies on his or her good judgment to act ethically in each given situation", (p. 17). I don't believe one is born with the traits of a virtuous person, these are learned through the actions of others particularly the parent. “Set the example and do the right thing even when you think no one is looking”, I can’t tell you how many times I have uttered these words to my Sailors and my boys. But I know it is my actions that both are scrutinizing. For example, I was once offered to have a course marked as complete by a First Class Petty Officer because he commented on how busy he knew I was and was sure I had completed the course several times during my time in the service. I quickly responded with, “that it wasn’t necessary for him to that and I would complete the course like he and the others in my department had done”. Later he told me he was testing me because he was looking for a mentor. Actions speak volumes for your character. As for the second part of the question, I believe character and practical wisdom are developed through those we interact with and experiences we have in life. We gain practical wisdom from every situation we are involved in and how we handle the situation develops our character in the eyes of those who observe our actions. As Aristotle stated, “sound, practical wisdom and sound character must always be the guide in these situations”, (Neher & Sandin, 2007, p. 30). If the speaker or communicator in any circumstance loses his or her credibility as a person of good…

When tragic events occur, society often points to the people who carried out the crime itself. However, often times the orders may come from a superior authority, and the automatic override to be obedient kicks in. Especially in the military, obedience is a form of order and without it, there would be no organization or respect of one’s upper authorities. In Columbia Picture’s “A Few Good Men”, Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, is a lawyer defending two men being accused of the murder of Private First Class Santiago. In the movie, Kaffee along with Galloway searches for the truth to discover whether an illegal code red occurred, killing PFC Santiago. Having integrity is doing what you say you are going to do and believing in what you say. If you go ahead and do something else, chances are that you lack integrity.
