Army Values Values are something everyone has not only heard of but discussed. You are taught as a child the values that your parents hold and as you grow you develop your own. Your values are often used to determine your worth as person, the Army has pinpointed specific values that all soldiers are expected to carry with them: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. Loyalty by definition is the state or quality of being faithful to commitments. The Army has not changed this definition. As a soldier you are expected to show loyalty to the constitution, the Army, your unit and other soldier. This is very similar to a civilian being loyal to their work. In civilian life we see this executed when donating to charities or buying a homeless a man a meal or giving him a night or more out of the weather. As a soldier this is done, as an extreme, by giving your life but more commonly by giving your time and effort. You always push a little further. Honor is living the other values; respect, duty, loyalty, selfless service, integrity and personal courage. Honor is keeping your word, trying your best, not giving up and standing alone when needed. Integrity is doing what is right both legally and morally. Integrity can be represented the same in both civilian and military life by being a leader and not letting those under you take the fall for your mistake. Integrity is not letting another suffer for a mistake or event that was not solely influenced by their actions and choices. It is also shown when you do the right thing, or even practice selfless service, when there is no one there to witness it. Personal courage is stepping out of your comfort zone. Whether it is repelling backwards down a 90 foot wall with no harness, or confronting your fear of the dark.
