My Experience with Flight 93

It was unusually cold on this morning of September 11th, 2001, and my alarm had just went off. The odd but needed 5 am. was when I woke up, because my flight was going to leave around 8:30 and I needed to be there on time. It was dad, making sure that I was on my way. I talked to him for a few minutes and then hung up. I glanced at the clock and realized

September 11th of 2001 was a day that nobody will ever forget. It was a day full of tragedy, loss, and grief. We have always been told that Osama Bin Laden and many other terrorists were the cause behind the tragic events of this day. We have always been told that he was the leader and the “bad guy”, and we have always believed it. Perhaps we have believed it because he was wanted in connection with the August 7, 1998 bombing of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya. What if this was not the case? What if it was a cover up by our own government system?…

I vividly remember the day of the Challenger Disaster. I was five years old and in kindergarten. My teacher, Ms. Epton, brought us outside to watch the shuttle launch; something many kids have to watch on television, but those of us living on the coast got to witness firsthand. I remember seeing the fiery glow of the shuttle, the gasps by the adults, and quickly being hurried back into the classroom. Not much was said about what had happened, it was not until later that I fully understood.…

We surely all have some knowledge of what happened on September 11, 2001, but do any of us recall any memories of the day? I had just turned 2 a week before the terrorist attacks on the twin towers. Yet, I vividly remember some of the details of what happened that day. Around 7:30 in the morning, I had been dropped off at daycare, as my mom worked at the grade school and my dad worked construction. My babysitter had liked to watch the news while we ate breakfast. All too quickly, it became evident, even for a two year old, that something bad was happening. A big shiny plane that looked all too innocent through young eyes, hit one of the tallest buildings in the country. Unable to comprehend what was fully taking place, my eyes could only focus of the colors; the red and orange flames, the black smoke and the debris falling. The babysitter’s house was left in an eerie silence.…

If I were to survive a helicopter crash, then nothing would be off the table to ensure that I would live long enough to be rescued. The definition of survival is “the state or fact of continuing to live or exist, typically in spite of an accident, ordeal, or difficult circumstances”. Entire TV show series and movies are dedicated to survival stories, where the hero or heroine has to go to drastic, and often disgusting, measures to see another day. People will do whatever they must for their own survival and quite often they lose their humanity in the process. I plan to survive while keeping my humanity intact, without letting my emotions get in the way of making logical decisions that will prolong my life, even if difficult.…
