My family is the epitome of a sports family. My dad played AAA baseball. My mom has a couple state titles in volleyball and softball. My step-dad played college football and coaches middle school basketball with my husband, who played college basketball. I play and coach volleyball. My younger brother is a shortstop and closing pitcher for Central Washington University. My cousin holds the state record for rushing yards in Nevada. My brother-in-law plays for the New York, Giants. The list could continue on and on but you get the point. A code of ethics is an agreement normally set between the coaching staff and the players. The code of ethics is used to promote and protect the interests of all members. Proper ethics in athletics implies a moral standard that requires integrity, confidence, and trust. A code of ethics normally highlights being an athlete as a privilege rather than a right. In each phase of life there are tough age appropriate trials and tribulations, so it seems logical that the lessons taught, should be age appropriate as well. The NCAA's code of ethics includes subjects such as sexual misconduct, violence, personal conduct, honesty, integrity, responsibility to the educational institution, and gambling to name a few. These are important ethics but do not apply to all ages. I coach girl's ages 9-12, and my code of ethics focus on suitable Middle School topics. My code of ethics for my team is simple. I use the acronym ACES; an ace in volleyball is when the ball is served over the net and the other team is unable to return it, it's the ultimate momentum shift. ACES stands for, Attitude, Choices, Effort, Standards. I believe these are all areas of life that are controllable.
