Personal Narrative: My Mom With Gas Money
I am my mom's oldest child and I have a younger sister who is five. My mom herself had enough money to pay her bills and get food. One time she didn't have enough money to get gas in her car, so I gave her 20 dollars, yes, my mom paid me back. That was hard to watch as me only being thirteen helping my mom with gas money. She recently got a raise and has no problems with paying for anything.
Playing sports was a huge commit for not only me but my mom. She drives me to and from sport to sport, still being on time. I played ETFC (Eugene Timbers Futbol Club) so we traveled a lot for games. She was at every game, some even in Washington. When we had tournaments she had to pay for hotels and food. I am very thankful for her.

“I DON’T CARE MOM!” I screamed at the top of my lunges. We were driving along I-95 on the sway home from my successful driver's license test. I was 16. I was normal. The radio played in the background but it couldn’t be heard over my mom yelling. This was the same crap I dealt with every day. I could have sworn that woman tried to find something to fight over: this time it was about how I should, “be more responsible” and “find a job” and “needing to grow up!”…

My mother never went to college. Despite—or perhaps [because] of—her lack of collegiate experience, she was a powerful influence on my ever-present desire for academic distinction. For her children, anything besides “extraordinary” was simply not an option. The constant pressure meshed painfully well with America’s flawed education system, which—not unlike my well-intentioned mother—continually creates an unhealthy environment of apathy in the face of competition. For the duration of my traditional education, I made intense efforts for a false, unfulfilling concept of academic success. I sacrificed my emotional well-being again and again for fleeting validation from any surrounding adults, in a desperate lifelong attempt to prove my worth…

It was a perfectly normal Saturday night, until I sat on the couch. I expected to enjoy a funny movie with my dad, but instead I got a trip to the hospital. I sat on the couch, and then I felt a sting in my elbow. At first, it felt like I got a shot at the doctor, but it slowly got worse, and felt more like a knife slicing into my elbow. I winced and sprung up from the couch. I squinted and my eyes scanned the spot where I just sat down. Aha, I thought. There was a small piece of plastic, and it looked like it broke off from a container.…

At the age of 13 my birth mother got pregnant with me. In September of 1998 3 ½ months early, I was born premature with no complications and then a month later in October I was diagnosed with spinal meningitis. Now for a 13 year old mom this was a lot to handle and all this just happened to fall on October 31st, Halloween (remember this for later in the story). Shortly after having me, my birth mom got pregnant with my sister. Many times me and my sister have heard “You guys are so close in age”, that would probably be because we are 11 months apart. So if you did your math then you would find out that two months after I was born my birth mother was pregnant with my sister. Crazy, right? Fun fact my sister was also born early, not quite as early as me but still pretty early.…
