The impact of physics affect my personal performance in many ways throughout marching band. First off, I will start out with explaining physics and the laws of it. Newton’s laws of motion are, one, “When viewed in an inertial reference frame, an object either is at rest or moves at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an external force.” This is basically saying when something is at rest, it tends to stay at rest, and something that is in motion tends to stay in motion. In marching band, we never tend to stay at rest, because we are always in motion, whether that be playing our instruments, which does require energy, or whether we are moving our bodies by marching or doing a visual, or also even thinking about what we are going to do next. The second law of Newton is, “the acceleration of a body is directly proportional to, and in the same direction as, the net force acting on the body, and inversely proportional to its mass. This is saying that the more force, the more acceleration. This is applying to marching because, you have to have force to do everything. If you don’t have this then we would just be walking all over the field without a care in the world. The way we march is force and the way our feet are moving at a certain tempo is accelerating our movements, putting force to them. Also the way we go to different sets to create objects and shapes in our movements, you have to apply force also, making the pictures sharp. The third law of Newton is, “When one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body simultaneously exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to that first body.” I believe this is saying that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction to the other one. This applies to marching band because when you are marching you have to keep straight legs most of the time and, to do that your legs swing kind of like a pendulum, switching the weight of your body from your right leg to your left leg. so this is a force that is an equal and opposite force relying on the other one. Finally there is the physics of simple and complex movement. This has to do with marching band majorly , because this is exactly what we do going from set to set, or object to object. A simple movement is that you are moving in a straight line, we do this many times through our performance, and many times just for practicing sake, for basic marching. There is also complex movements, like going from a specific spot in the field by yourself, then into a curve with other people . also this could be moving from a curve to another curve or a diagonal, which is exactly how it sounds except it’s a diagonal with people. All of these physics applies to marching band majorly and affects our overall performance during our shows and competitions.

Dear Principle Spencer, Associate Principal Lee, and Athletic Director Fry: You do so much for this school. The goal of success for all students is incredibly apparent through your actions. It is obvious that the football team is amazing, and so are the other sports. They all put forth hard work, and earn their greatness. But you are neglecting a major part of home football games: the marching band. The Turpin Marching Band is one of, if not the biggest team in the school, with 150 members. These people train just as hard as the football team. I can tell you with experience, with how many times I’ve pushed a heavy synth cart through the mud, or up the hill to the stadium like King Sisyphus’ boulder in the underworld. I’ve marched so hard I…

Marching band is analogous to a machine. All of the components must properly function in order to complete a certain task. Therefore, each member should possess dedication in order to produce a triumphant show and capture the audience’s attention. If one member fails, the whole organization collapses. Through these experiences, I learned that determination and dedication contributes to a successful lifestyle. Otherwise, dreams could never exist.…

Music, in itself, is its own language; for some it’s easy to understand, others take it to the next level and add choreographed movement to it, such as marching bands. An average marching wind ensemble practice begins with a simple stretch and review of the basic marching techniques. They begin one week before the fall semester starts. Normal “band camp” days involve basic technique practices on the field in the morning, rehearsal after lunch, and a combination of the marching and music after their dinner. They meet three days a week during the fall semester; two and a half hours each session, depending on whether the directors think it’s necessary. They must learn a pre-game performance, their halftime show, and all stand-tunes (the short songs that are…

    Drum Major Essay

One will understand that they must be patient with their fellow peers, for the reason that some people might struggle with marching, or memorize their music slower than others. One must learn that respect is not given, but earned. Just because a drum major has more authority than a regular ole’ trombone player, does not mean they will receive respect from that trombone player right away. One will gain integrity; being a drum major requires an individual to work with fellow band members and treat everyone fairly while keeping in mind moral virtues. And last but not least, most importantly, one must learn how to roll with the punches. Whether the band gets off tempo during show, somebody loses their drill, the metronome dies and needs new batteries right at that moment, or even when the director doesn’t have a key to the band tower and needs somebody to run inside and get one, learning how to handle tough situations in a orderly manner is essential. A drum major is someone the band considers a role model, and if they are stressed out, or blowing each circumstance out of proportion, they will lose respect from their peers. That individual will not be considered principled, but amoral.…

When the typical person thinks of sports they think of football, baseball, or basketball. While those are all great sports, what about those sports that aren't classified as sports, but should be? Marching band should be considered a sport for many reasons. I couldn't imagine how different my life would be without marching band. Actually, I might be able to. I would be friendless, insecure, unable to lead, and left with few high school memories. I remember when my band went to Kings Island for their "Trills and Thrills" competition. Just as we were about to go home it began to downpour. Everyone was completely soaked, one kid vomited so we had to put down the windows on the bus, we were all freezing cold and ended up getting sick, but it's something I will always laugh about. I can also recall going to the University of Cincinnati Band Day and learning new games with the other bands and then when my reed broke just as we were about to walk out onto the field and I cried and cried. No matter how bad that moment was, I will always remember it. Those were the best moments of my high school life because they were spent with some of the people I love…

    Marching Band In Schools

The marching band is still a musical representation of the institution that the ensemble is located. The marching band serves as a large recruitment tool and an essential public relations vehicle for music departments all over (Cumberledge). Therefore, musicianship should not change nor diminish because of the type of ensemble. It’s been said that the earliest marching bands were the forerunners of today’s symphony orchestras, concert bands, and instrumental chamber music, as well as the modern marching band (Madsen, 2007, 54). The first marching bands have military origins with the sole purpose of achieving excellence and competing at extraordinary high levels of marching precision and musicianship (55). Therefore, the type of students you recruit is determined by type of ensemble you have. This is very prevalent at many HBCU band programs. The ensemble has its own character. Does the character of the ensemble promote the best in music? Does the character of the band promote academic…

My band director is one of the most important and influential people in my life. He always helps boost my confidence in my playing abilities, and he always believes in me. I started band a year after everyone else, because my mom wanted me to focus on school for the first year of middle school. When I finally did join band in sixth grade, Mr. Sacco was very helpful and patient with me. There’s something he’s said that I believe is the best advice I have ever received : “It’s not the mistakes you make, it’s how you recover.” When marching band started during my freshman year, I heard those ten words at least once a week. Though I know Mr. Sacco meant this as if you miss a step or forget a rest, it’s okay, as long as you don’t react; recover…

When it came to me joining the Ridgeview band program I was shown that things were no longer going to be as simple as they used to be. I had officially started when it was nearing the end of the summer and I had to go to band camp. While there I saw that no more would the music for marching only be half a page long, but instead multiple full sheet pages. During middle school, we were only required to memorize the half page of music that we were provided, but now it was a far more rigorous requirement that needed to be fulfilled. However, it wasn't only the music that received an increase in difficulty the style of marching…

Personally, performing arts has affected me greatly since I first began playing the piano as my very first instrument. Firstly, one of the main affects that has impacted me and made me who I am today are life values. For example: patience, discipline, appreciation, Broadened perspectives, appreciation and emotions. Patience is one of the things that I strongly believe that we artists need, so that we will be able to teach others and encourage our fellow musicians to strive hard though they might have started off slow. Based on my experience, I started off being the slowest and the last few to be promoted into the main band. After having excelled and worked hard to become a section leader to conduct my members, whenever I encounter new junior members who were slower, patience does not just help me but help my fellow juniors boost their confidence also as a musician. Discipline is a form of focus, and tolerance as a musicians we need the discipline to excel in our composition and pieces that we played so that we are able to produce quality and précised work. I also strongly feel that discipline is something which is required in all our daily lives, without discipline the outcome of our results would show how inconsistent and unprofessional at what we do. In my secondary school days given the role as a drum major i was required to discipline a band of 70 members. With the lack of discipline, everything would be disorganized. Therefore, there is a need of correction in the way they think and learn to follow instructions that are given to them and understand why all these rules are being implemented. Thus, it also ties in with commitment and accountability in the process of taking ownership in…
