Importance Of A Band Director
My band director is one of the most important and influential people in my life. He always helps boost my confidence in my playing abilities, and he always believes in me. I started band a year after everyone else, because my mom wanted me to focus on school for the first year of middle school. When I finally did join band in sixth grade, Mr. Sacco was very helpful and patient with me. There’s something he’s said that I believe is the best advice I have ever received : “It’s not the mistakes you make, it’s how you recover.” When marching band started during my freshman year, I heard those ten words at least once a week. Though I know Mr. Sacco meant this as if you miss a step or forget a rest, it’s okay, as long as you don’t react; recover

As a player for the Hanford West basketball team, I was placed into situations that required me to step up and be the leader of the team. One of these situations was during a game when our most talented player had been injured. I know my teammates relied on me to be the one to look up to for all the answers. I was certain I would have to go beyond my capabilities to lead this unit to victory. The game started off horribly because of the evident lack of effort from our team. As the commander of this group of young men I knew something had to change. I stepped out of my comfort zone and became very vocal in order to get some motivation pumping through our veins. Every time my teammates made a play I would be sure to acknowledge them in some way, whether it was a high five or a nod. This made me realize feedback is essential when taking on the leadership role in order to boost self the confidence of others. As the game went on we managed to pull off an outstanding team victory.…

From his first steps on the vaudeville stage, to his last USO show, Bob Hope was entertaining. Mr. Hope was a comedian and an actor, yet he still reached an unmatchable caliber of musical ability. While his talents were far greater than mine, I still feel that there are many similarities between us. His love of music inspired me to appreciate its role in my life even more. Since I began playing the saxophone in seventh grade, music has been one of the centers of my life. I compete, perform and most importantly, practice on a consistent basis. The band program at my high school is poorly funded, and thus offers few opportunities in the way of musical challenges. However, because of my love of music and feeling of obligation to my classmates, I continue to be an active member and hold the position of drum major. To further challenge myself, I auditioned for and was accepted to the Louisville Youth Orchestra saxophone ensemble. This ensemble challenges my abilities and requires me to often seek help from my private instructor. While my performances with this ensemble may not be perfect, due to the level of difficulty of the music, I…

Although last year I was not given the position of Drum Major, I was awarded the title of “Low Voice Section Leader.” Being named section leader made me feel so honored, and I was ecstatic to be in the position. As a section leader, I truly experienced what it is like to be a leader in a marching band. Although it is difficult, it is definitely rewarding. Throughout the marching band season, people often approached me for advice and help, and I was delighted to be able to assist different people and see how much they improved with my aid and…

For eighteen hours a week and fourteen weeks out of the year, members of the Ralston Valley Marching Band practices and memorizes a show. Every bar of music is memorized and perfected, and every member learns their exact spot on the field for every beat of the show. This kind of thing takes an extreme amount of coordination and planning by the staff. In the eyes of the staff, a Section Leader acts as a bridge between them, the students, and other sections of the band in order to facilitate coordination. We also were meant focus on encouraging the band during practice. At the beginning of the school year, each Section Leader goes to a training session for a total of three hours. After this session, each section leader is widely on their own…

In seventh grade I used to be in marching band. I had done band in sixth grade as well, but this year it was marching band. I played the clarinet and I was pretty good at it. In the middle of the school year we had a parade that our band had to march in. It was something that I had never done before, so I was a little bit apprehensive about doing it. People who who were new to marching band like me were referred to as “newbies”, which wasn’t very many people. During marching band practices all of the “newbies” were put in the back because we didn’t really know what we were doing. Over time all the newbies got better, but that didn’t seem to apply to me. I could keep tempo and play my instrument while marching in sync with everyone and I would…

Out of all the extra-curricular activities I have listed, marching band is the most significant one. In marching band, I met a lot of people that became very close friends with me. My clarinet group was like a small family. We practice and compete together. I was one of the favorite ones in my clarinet group, because I kept everyone happy when the group are going through hard times. For example, if I recall it correctly, during my freshman year, we competed in a competition, and got first place in the prelims, but when we got to finals, we lost our first place position. My group was sad, but I kept them happy. Marching band has made a huge impact in my life by teaching my how to challenge myself more, and how to have a more organized schedule…

I understand that with this job comes great responsibility, and I am definitely ready for it! Being a member of the Woodland High School marching band for two years, I now have an idea of how to make band more attractive to everyone. Making the time spent in band class and at after school practices most effective is a major prerogative of mine. I would like to make it our number one goal to get every band member to learn, and memorize their music. This will allow the show to be ready as early as possible so it gives ample time to perfect formations, add character to the show, and make it our own. By doing this I know our scores will be significantly higher than last years. Most importantly each member will understand that hard work does pays off. I love music. I never hesitate to sign up for any extracurricular band I can get into. I love being involved, I love growing as a musician. I also love marching band- it’s so challenging and so draining, but it’s such an amazing experience. I have a zealous enthusiasm for music and marching band that propels me forward, and can apply this to my role as drum major. Energetic leaders are much better than halfhearted ones.…

A few ways you can learn from your past mistakes are by thinking about what went wrong and figure out what you need to do different. For example, summer of 2016 there was a high adventure campout on the border of Minnesota and Canada for my Boy Scout troop, and on the last night a storm blew through, knocking down a tree and that tree fell on my best friends tent, killing him, another female leader, and…

I knew the amount needed to succeed was monstrous and that I could not handle that with everything else. I also realized that this was going to be my final year of marching band. By the end of the year, my passion to continue both was lacking so I decided to go with tennis. I the flame I had for marching band had burnt out. The next year the amount of stress that I had voluntarily signed up for had been lightened considerably. Even though I missed some aspects of marching band, I realized trying to do too much at once of anything was never a good idea. I learned this the hard…

Failure is not something an individual can avoid. We all make mistakes because we are imperfect. Thus, we need to look at ways that help us overcome a situation we had failed at. According to “Rich in Thought: Not every Olympian Gets a Medal” by Richard Paloma, he states,” Mistakes are tools for learning- not indicators of poor ability” (paragraph 7). Whether it’s losing a soccer game, failing a test, or coming last in a race we all have failures. Three ways that I have made a mistake, but learned from it are failure’s on a school history final, the loss of my soccer game, and stealing from Target.…

What does it mean to be a leader? The answer is simple, but the meaning is much deeper than most people think. The simple answer is that a leader is one who brings a group toward a common goal, but the importance of these leaders is harder to explain. The importance of these leaders, especially in a large group such as the marching band, is profound. This, my formal application of the position of saxophone section leader, will explain why I would make a suitable leader in the marching band. I will make my attempt at explaining how a section leader should be, and the goals they should work toward achieving.…

As a four sport athlete (football, hockey, baseball, and track), I have endured my ups and downs with sports teams, but nothing compares to the adversity, leadership, and courage I had to muster up in the 2015 football season. The 2015 season looked bright for the hilltoppers, coming off three successful seasons, where I started and helped our football team win many games. I was a co-captain my Junior year and all-conference, so I was really looking forward to taking the reigns and becoming the true leader of our football team. However, the season was a disaster on paper at best. We went 0-9 and competed at a high level in 3 of those games. The day of our fourth football game, only 30 minutes prior to getting on the bus, my stomach started…

The grueling minutes (which feel like hours) that lead up to a marching band performance are some of the most stressful moments in every band nerd’s life. The desire to win, mixed with the fear of forgetting a step causes an annoying queasiness in the pit of everyone’s stomachs. Not only would I be worried about my own performance, but also concerned for the seven other girls in my section, and the sixty plus other people that march on the field around us. Each step, note, spin, or toss of a flag, and every pair of eyes on the judge's box all matters. Every color guard member is expected to keep their flags in the same time, while also marching (sometimes even dancing) along to the beat with the rest of the band. The practices and performances are difficult enough, but even more so when all eight girls have different opinions, learning styles, and attitudes.…

Organizations are concerned with compensation for many reasons, depending on which perspective one looks at the organization. From society’s perspective organization will be concerned with being seen as an organization that cares for its employees, such as having fair compensation packages and providing employees with heath care; which in turns enriches society as a whole. Organizational stockholders will be concerned with how employees are paid as id directly affects the bottom lines of the company (does employee ownership increase performance and therefore increase the bottom line or does it only dilute stockholder’s wealth). Managers are usually concerned with two aspects of the compensation – one, the expense side and two, as motivational tool. For employees…
