o far, you have been reading about different aspects of culture, such as art, architecture, religion and science. Another important aspect of our culture is education. But what is education? You may say that it means learning something in school or from books. This is partially true. Education is a learning experience. But learning takes place at all times in one’s life. However, whereas some other learning experiences could be of a random or accidental nature, an educational experience is usually a deliberate and pre-designed programme with the purpose of affecting certain pre-determined behavioural changes in an individual. You are going through such an experience right now as you proceed through various lessons of this course. But have you ever wondered how education is related to culture? Culture is the sum total of the accumulated experiences and achievements of previous generations inherited by succeeding generations as members of society. The structured process of passing on this collective pool of experiences and achievements may be called education. Hence education is not only a means of passing on cultural beliefs and ideas, but it is also shaped by cultural beliefs since it is a product of culture. The system of education thus changes along with changes in culture. In this lesson we shall find out about the evolution of the systems of education that prevailed in India since the most ancient times because society considered the education of its members as one of its primary obligation.

The Gurukul system of education is one of the oldest on earth, and was dedicated to the highest ideals of all-round human development: physical, mental and spiritual. In this system the ‘guru’ decided what to teach according to the need and the ability of the student. Later India saw the flourishing of higher education at Nalanda, Takshashila, Ujjain, and Vikramshila Universities. Art, Architecture, Painting, Logic, Grammar, Philosophy, Astronomy, Literature, Buddhism, Hinduism, Arthashastra, Law and Medicine were taught and each university was specialized in a particular field of study. There is no reason for our elders to accuse the Western culture for the ills in our society. Every culture has its positive as well as negative aspects. Our own Indian culture too has good and bad sides. Therefore whether it is Indian or Western culture, it is the duty of every individual to make ‘use’ of it and not to make ‘misuse’ of it. Today’s youth are misusing the Western culture because our elders, educationists and reformers have failed to make our children understand the importance of our Indian culture.…

Indian culture, which is one of the oldest and richest cultures known in other, parts of the world, is nowadays posing a serious threat as western culture is establishing its strong base in India which will slowly; gradually wipe away the Indian culture. A scholar writes that “India is not, as people keep calling it, and underdeveloped country, but rather, in the context of its history and cultural heritage, a highly developed one in an advanced state of decay”. Despite of these severe threats still Indian culture has a multi-diverse flavor which has been consistently unique in its very own way. Starting from the rishis in the Vedic period, we see several divine personalities like Mahavira, Buddha, Ashoka, Shankara, Madhvacharya, Krishnadevaraya, Akbar, Basava, Guru Govind Singh, Gandhi etc. who have spread these values through their preaching’s and examples. The first value which underlies our culture is the faith in the Moral and Spiritual order. The Vedic sages called it Rita but later it was called Dharma. The other value is dedication, surrender of the ego to God (Samyama). In addition manners, traditions, living and trading patterns etc. are one of the graceful components of Indian culture. Although the most feature of Indian culture is its value which is deeply rooted within the heart, mind, body and soul of its dwellers but still influence of western culture started in India during 19th century have started destructing the roots.…

The Yoga buzz took over the world and that is when we began appreciating the science of it, otherwise it would have been buried just as many other ancient traditions before it. The Gurukul system of education in India was one of the finest and was dedicated to the highest ideal of physical, spiritual and mental development. But today education is our biggest worry, as most of our population remains illiterate.…
