Palomar University Scholarship Analysis
When starting Palomar College in the fall of 2014, the plan was only obtain a certificate of proficiency in real estate. However, upon seeking employment in the banking industry, it became evident that I would need a Bachelor’s Degree to be successful. I was not even sure where to start as no one in my family graduated from college. It’s been twenty years since I was in school and I struggled with math. In fact, I dropped out of high school in my junior year, but I completed it three years later in order to join the ARMY. In the summer of 2015, I started with English 10 and Math 50. I did well in the English class; however, I did not pass the math class. I retook Math 50 in the fall of 2015. I passed the class, but I was still unclear of …show more content…
Rather than not pass math again, I chose to withdraw. I didn’t want to run the risk of barely passing and not being prepared for Math 110 which would then jeopardize my GI Bill. My Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) counselor recommended me to try Math 56 as it covered more material and I would have better an opportunity to pass it. I took Math 56 over this past summer. I did not pass the class yet, I felt more confident in my abilities to understand Algebra. Proudly, last semester I passed Math 56 and was one of the top students in the class. Without a strong foundation, Algebra has taken me along time to understand. With perseverance, my math anxiety has become manageable. Additionally, I came to learn about some challenges when using the GI Bill, for example, there is no pay when school is not in session. I went to the Palomar College Career Center to update my resume. Unfortunately, getting a part-time job on the weekends proved to be difficult. Hard work of looking for more income had paid off and I was able to find a job working with Veterans Office doing VA work study. Learning how to navigate through the college system in order to help my seventeen-year-old son go through the process is motivation to finish my education plan and

I am here to discuss how hard of a situation is has been for me to get back into school. I have been out of school for 10 years and never thought it would be this difficult. We hear every day the sayings and advertisements of “go back to school” or “continue your education, it’s as easy as 1-2-3”. Well, I’m here to say that I have had one heck of a time. From not having my parents push me in the right direction when I was younger to branching off and not finding out these things until later. I certainly don’t want to say it is too late to go back to school but I do feel to be a late bloomer. Anyhow, when I first got into Austin, I had to go back and forth to the campus 4-5 times without having any accurate information from a counselor. I mean, I’m a hands on person.…

I should be considered for the HEBF scholarship due to my hard work and determination; not just in playing sports, but for improvement. Whether it be soccer, volleyball, or track and field, I have never given up when presented with a challenge. I rather look at it as an opportunity for growth, something that can, not only strengthen my physical skills but my collaborative skills as well. Something that I have learned from participating in sports is coming up with ways to overcome obstacles and to keep trying. That means pushing myself to the limit and overpowering boundaries. The experience from participating in each sport have somewhat in some shape and form, taught me the importance of being a leader and working to together. These skills…

The new community college for full-time students will not provide a degree in all areas, “All first-year students would be required to take a predetermined core curriculum and would then be limited to their choice of about 12 majors” (Moltz, 2009). The majors that were proposed will be in pre-career fields, which will be designed to assist students with transferability. The transferability requirements to four-year institutions have increased throughout the years and it is important that the two-year college focuses on making sure that student are academically on track to transfer. At times, community college students do not complete a bachelor’s due to the lack of preparation for what is expected of them once they transfer. The curriculum proposed requires full time enrollment and taking more than 12 units per semester, which will prepare students for a better transition to a four-year…

During course registrations at my middle school, I was advised to take AP classes in high school. AP classes were rigorous classes that challenged you and taught you things at a college-level, unlike the ordinary High School Curriculum. Originally, I denied myself. An obstacle I had at that time was not taking the next step because of the fear I had of college classes. It wasn’t that my family was financially unable. My family was able to pay for the AP…

My school only offered AP classes to students who were seniors. As a Junior, I wanted to challenge myself, and prepare for college, so I decided to self-study for an exam. After doing some research, I decided that the best AP exams for me were AP Microeconomics and Computer Science. These topics were interesting and were applicable to my prospective careers. I found an online course for AP Computer Science. For AP Microeconomics, I bought an AP exam prep book. Though my aspirations and goals were great, being committed them was a true challenge. I still had to keep my regular school work and activities as a higher priority. I was able to keep track with AP Computer Science for the first semester, but I tried to get through its lessons and assignments…

When my parents first expressed to me that I needed to take advanced courses starting freshman year, I was skeptical. I desired an easy, laid-back experience in high school; however, my parents declared otherwise. I began freshman year with three honors classes, and the parental expectation to make at least ninety-five percent in all of my classes. At the time, I thought this to be too extreme, but little did I know that colleges look back on all grades…

I successfully completed my first semester with a 4.0GPA and perfect attendance. About 2 to 3 weeks into my second semester my mother became very ill unto death (September 16th, 2007). The demands from my mother’s illness took a major toll on me emotionally and I was unable to adequately focus on my academics. I’m attending Monterey Peninsula college on a short-term basis Until I transfer to a four year university. Education in my family has never been an option and I have always been pushed to further my education. I myself value my education because it will enhance my knowledge of whatever career I decide to pursue. Learning in general to me has always been important, I love discovering things I’ve never been introduced to or heard of before. Like Dr. Seuss once said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go”. I chose to attend MPC to explore my options and figure out what career I want to pursue. One of my short-term education goals is to get good grades in all of my classes this semester (my first semester of college) and to create my ideal career plan. A long-term goal of mine is to complete all of my…

My reason for dropping out of school and getting my G.E.D is because I don’t do well in school I don’t get along with the teachers or the kids although I do make some friends there are other kids who I just don’t get along with I don’t like work or homework because school isn’t for me I hate it along with immature teenagers who think life is a game plus I think getting my G.E.D would be better and faster for me it will be good to because I’m under C.Y.F.D custody and I already took the Pre G.E.D test and past everything but math so instead of having 8 classes each day I will have one math class every two weeks which will take the stress and my school depression off of me and I will have more time for a job and to take a Driver’s Ed class to get my learners permit and since I’m more grown up and more mature than most kids because of the life I had it would be best for me to get my G.E.D rather than stay in a place that I don’t like and fail out of school like I was doing.…
