Example: Outline for Nursing Teaching Plan:

What have you determined, based on your assessment, to be key information that the patient needs to know/learn?
Outline your plan/your learning objectives.
Determine the required content to include to meet your objectives.
Determine the resources/methods that you will use to meet your learning objectives.
Finally evaluate the effectiveness of your plan and make changes prn.

Cellulitis:

1. The patient/family will be able to define cellulitis.
a. It is an inflammation of dermis and subcutaneous tissues.
b. It is usually caused by streptococcal or staphylococcal infection.
2. The patient/family will (be able to) list s/s of cellulitis.
a. Redness, warmth
b. Localized pain
c. Fever, chills, malaise
d. Swelling
e. Skin resembling that of an orange
f. Lesion or open wounds
g. Drainage
3. The patient/family will (be able to) list treatments to promote healing.
a. Immobilize and elevate affected limb
b. Antibiotics as ordered
c. Pain management:
i. Cool compress ii. Pain meds prn
d. Wound care
i. Wash hands well before and after changing dressing ii. Use aseptic technique iii. Wash soiled linens separately
4. The patient/family will be able to list possible complications of cellulitis
a. Sepsis
b. Metastatic abscess
c. Gangrene

Examples of resources/methods that may be used:
*Normal wound healing, s/s of infection (handouts, audiovisuals demonstrating an infected wound)
*Equipment needed for wound care (provide list)
*Wound care-RN demonstration, pt return demo, handouts
*Follow up needs-list of providers, phone numbers, appt times etc

Examples of evaluation of pt teaching
*Pt (or family) demonstrates proper techniques r/t dressing change
*Pt verbalize s/s of infection
*Pt verbalize s/s to notify physician of
*Pt verbalizes understanding of pain scale, pain management
