In this assignment, I will be using meta-theoretical assumptions to compare on the two perspectives of Modernist and Post Modernist, further explaining on Power, Control and Conflict. After which, giving a short introduction of Apple and link how the two perspectives examine Apple’s organisational network and influence, and finally coming to a conclusion.
The difference between a Modernist and Post Modernist within their meta-theoretical assumptions, both Ontology and Epistemology.
Ontology is our conjecture about reality and what is real. The Modernist has an objectivism view in Ontology. “An ontological position that asserts that social phenomenon and their meanings have an existence that is independent of social actors“(In Bryman 2003). This means, in every organisation, there are rules, a system of working, protocols or the instructions of superiors to adhere to in getting things done. For example, the general manager instructs the managers on what needs to be done, a single manager from that specific branch then splits the job among the executive to be done. The executives then learn and apply the values in the mission statement to carry out their work. This show the hierarchy system, and violation of this system may cause them to be reprimanded or even fired. “The organisation is therefore a constraining force that acts on and inhabits its members” (In Bryman 2003). Epistemology is how one gains knowledge. The Modernist has a positivism view in Epistemology. “An epistemological position that advocates the application of the methods of the natural sciences to the study of the social reality and beyond.”(In Bryman 2003).Scientific methods are involved in deriving the truth. Data is collected through research and studies, and from these studies, theories are derived and explanations are made.
For the Post Modernist view on Ontology it is stated that “the belief that the world appears through language and is situated in discourse; what is spoken of exists, therefore everything that exists is a text to be read or performed” (Mary Jo Hatch with Ann L. Cunliffe2006). They view the truth this way: knowledge and ideas voiced out will be deemed real only if it is performed. On the other hand, the Post Modernist view in Epistemology is as such “knowledge cannot be an accurate account of truth because meanings cannot be fixed; there is no independent reality; there are no facts, only interpretations; knowledge is a power play” (Mary Jo Hatch with Ann L. Cunliffe2006). This means that information is not necessarily the truth because meanings can be twisted and based on how an individual looks at it.
Difference between Modernist and Post Modernist
The Modernist operates in a hierarchal system and has a code of conduct to adhere to. They base their decisions on results, this can be seen from this reference “Modernist claim that I saw (heard, smelled, tasted or touched) my data, and you can confirm them for yourself by replicating my procedures” (Mary Jo Hatch with Ann L. Cunliffe2006). They simply refuse to allow subjectivity to enter their science. The Post Modernist on the other hand differs from Modernist in its refusal to seek truth. “They often refuse to take even a temporary philosophical stand because they believe that doing so privileges some form of knowledge over others and this violates post modern ethics” (Mary Jo Hatch with Ann L. Cunliffe2006). They question the every action of others. “ post modern writings provide a more damning critique showing that a central agent –subject is as central to ideology critique as it is to dominant groups and the systems that advantage them” (Mats Alvesson and Stanley A.Deetz)
Power, Control and Conflict (Modernist)
From a Modernist point of view, Power is in a form of authority in a hierarchal level. Those people like officers,...
