Organic Chemistry Personal Statement
When I first began college, my ambition was to become a doctor to cure diseases. However, when I took my first chemistry class I became mesmerized with the field of chemistry. The idea that I could start with one molecule and change it into a completely different compound both fascinated and thrilled me. I was at a predicament, on one hand I wanted to study medicine to help people, but I was far more interested in and passionate about the chemical processes and reactions. This changed when I took my first organic chemistry class. I want to make a career by applying chemistry to medicine and biology, especially in the realm of synthesizing molecules. My relevant coursework includes: Chem121 General Chemistry I, Chem 122 General Chemistry II, Chem 241 Organic Chemistry I, and Chem 242 Organic Chemistry II, Biol 196 Modern Biology I, and Biol 197 Modern Biology II . I have also completed math up to calculus II (Math180, Math182). In my spare time, I am also a chemistry tutor at my college. Being a tutor has not only given me a deep foundation on chemistry, but also gave me the opportunity to …show more content…
Eventually my plan is to go on and obtain a PhD in organic chemistry. I am particularly interested in the area involving the synthesizing molecules. Especially compounds that have similar functions to natural molecules. My goal is to use these molecules to treat or cure diseases that hinder human functionality. I believe my passion for chemistry make me a perfect candidate for this internship. I want to participate in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program because I believe it will help me gain the experience necessary to pursue a research oriented career. I am looking forward to taking the knowledge I have learned on chemical synthesis, and applying it to real

In order to become a successful chemist, a person will need to have a lot of knowledge about chemistry and science. Without the knowledge of chemistry, you wouldn’t know how to conduct your experiments and revise your tasks. Without knowledge you wouldn’t get a good job. In order to become a chemist you need to have a bachelor's degree, preferably in chemistry. You are recommended to get a higher degree like a master’s or even a PhD diploma/ doctoral degree for most chemist job opportunities. Your college placement counselor can help you prepare for a career in chemistry by exploring different career choices and choosing coursework appropriate for the job in chemistry that you are interested in. In fact, I loved it so much that I took not one, but two years of it. Because of this single class, I constantly find myself calculating partial pressures or writing molecular structures for every compound I know. The most fascinating part about chemistry is it’s everywhere! Whether it is understanding how biological chemistry keeps us alive or how the chemicals in our food nourish the body, chemistry is crucial to survival, yet, chemistry isn’t just fascinating in an anatomical way, it’s all around us. Take pasta, for instance, my favorite meal to cook and eat. Now imagine, making this dish at least three times a week for the past six years. Wouldn’t you wonder what chemical processes occur when cooking, or how to boil water the fastest? That’s what chemistry provided me--a platform to make the mundane process of cooking an exciting experience that I can fathom on a molecular level. I just can’t say it enough, I love…

Walter Matthau once said “My doctor gave me six months to live, but when I couldn't pay the bill he gave me six months more.” Doctors are only given certain amount of time to save a patient’s life. Without biology and chemistry an operation cannot be performed in a doctor’s life. The most interesting subjects in my life are biology and chemistry. These depth subjects have changed my life. Biology and chemistry changed my life and how I approach the world before. Now, I knew how the human body works. It heals when we get paper cuts and when we have little minor accidents that we don’t even observe. I want to become a pharmacist or pediatrician because I always wanted to help people with their medical needs. So my interest started growing as I got through middle school. Biology and Chemistry interested me mostly during high school but I was more interested in biology because chemistry was based on doing calculations involving calculus. I was more interested in learning about how we are made and how we function. As time went by, I started researching more about the specific majors in biology and chemistry. I wanted to be a pharmacist or a pediatrician and open up my own hospital to treat poor patients at no cost.…
