Old Man On The Bridge By Ernest Hemingw
Old man on the bridge by Ernest Hemingway
Victoria Akers 1.B

A. Comprehension questions:
1. Where was the old man sitting and why? The old man was sitting on a bench on the bridge. He has been evacuated from his home in San Carlos because of the Spanish civil war and because of the artillery. He has been walking a 12 kilometres, so he is tired.

2. What task did the narrator have to carry out? He had to explore the bridgehead and find out what point the enemy had advanced.

3. Why was the old man the last person to leave the town? He was taking care of his animals. I also think its because he has a strong love for his city, and that its hard for him to leave it all behind.

4. Why was the old man concerned about the animals? Which animal was he least worried about and why? The two goats, the cat and the four pigeons were his home, his whole life. He had no family he had to provide for, so he raised the animals instead. He is least worried about the cat, because it can provide itself.

5. Did the old man support either side in the conflict? He is neutral. An old man who has no politics and no care in the world for war. He only worries about his family.

6. Why did the narrator want the old man to move on? Because it was a dangerous place to sit. It was right in the middle of it all. People were being evacuated in carts, and the narrator was exploring the bridgehead. Everybody was getting ready for war.

7. What happened when the old man stood up to leave? He was very tired, so his legs swayed back and forth until he sat down again. All the carts evacuating people had left, so there was nothing left to do about him. The fascist were now coming.

8. Is it clearly stated whether the old man survived the war or not? How do you interpret the final sentence in the story? The old man died in the war, because he didn’t leave his spot on the bench. He was 76 years old, had no family and he had lived his life to the fullest. The last sentence states that only one thing

In The Rock and the River, by Kekla Magoon, “all it takes for evil to exist is for good people to do nothing” is a prominent theme. An example of this is when Bucky had just been brutally beat and arrested by the police. The police did this in broad daylight in front of everyone including Maxie and Sam. “People on the street began going about their business again. The radio blasted, covering the silence of disbelief, of resignation.” (pg. 68). This quote demonstrates the theme because it shows that if the people watching the violence happen (aka the “good people”) do nothing, then the cop’s racism (aka the evil) would continue existing.…

Every night the clock struck twelve midnight she had woke up. The loud sounds of heavy wheels moving through the street struck her ears. The laundress had always wondered what was out there. Whereas her husband told her not to look as she heard the sounds. This didn’t stop her from looking. She was determined to figure out what was out there and asked the woman who washed in the tub next her, “what you are hearing is the Army of the Dead. They are Confederate soldiers who died in hospital without knowing that the war was over. Each night, they rise from their graves and go to reinforce Lee in Virginia to strengthen the weakened Southern forces." Remotely the next night at twelve o'clock she woke up. Despite…

As people live through life they don’t think of what could have been of the people that went to war. In the early 1900’s World War One started which caused a great amount of people to go in to war. The ones who were barely starting their lives and the ones whom already had a life. For the ones that were barely starting there lives, they didn’t have much to go back to they had mom, dad and maybe a sibling or two. For the ones that had lives already they had to go home to a wife and children whom they them selves maybe have to support. Learning about each generation of these men is interesting. First there is the main character. He is the young teenager that only has mom and dad. Then there is the character that has a family back home to take care of. His wife and probably his children. It’s hard having to learn about these things but at the same time I think it’s good because it teaches what we should value in life.…

The lingering light was immersed by the rapidly falling night. The once salmon, purple sky transformed into a vast expanse of jet-black that engulfed the whole town. Yet at the corner of the street, the house remained unchanged. Supported only by stilts, its shabby character inconsistent to the grace and elegance of its neighbours. Its door flung open and a large figure emerged under the flickering light juxtaposed by dark shadows, followed by ‘Don’t go Benjamin’. The sentimental tone evident in the melodious voice. But the arrogant figure departed blithely without regard for the tender values. ‘He shouldn’t have done that. Old wounds should never be reopened’, the old man whose eyes adamantly refused to leave the windowpane let out solemnly as though the times which he ran away from, caught up to him.…
