Old Gas Block Reflection
This week’s video covered how to properly remove an old A-frame gas block to swap out with a modernized low-profile/picatinny railed gas block. Throughout the course of this video it’s very apparent that utilizing the proper tools can make this an easy job. I’ve had the unfortunate experience of “winging it” on an upgrade on my first AR-15. I’ll now cover the importance of using the proper tools. The video doesn’t demonstrate it, but it’s also very valuable to pay attention. The Gentleman in the video removed the flash suppressor was removed prior the swapping out of the gas block. To simply put it, with the flash suppressor on you would not have the clearance to remove the gas block, now that I have covered that I will move onto the main body topic. As …show more content…
Over a short period of time, I wanted to upgrade it and make it “my own” in a sense. So first came removing the old gas block. I did not have the proper tools(punch set) and improvised, only to mare up the metal and eventually get the old gas block off. Needless to say, it was an eye sore. What took the gunsmith in the video less than 3 minutes in the video to do took me over an hour. Granted, I did not understand the importance of proper tooling and had a certain arrogance to myself back then. Then came the realization that I had to remove the gas tube, once again, I was at it. I ended up wrecking the gas tube due to my lack of skill and patience. At this point I was frustrated and ended up swallowing my pride and took it to a professional. Of course I was laughed at, but I was also very fortunate. The Gunsmith I went to took the time to explain where I went wrong and allowed me to hang around and watch as she finished my half-assed effort. Ever since then I’ve been infatuated with this skillset. This video hit really close to home for me, seeing how this was my very first experience of working on firearms aside from cleaning

The Ghent Altarpiece is considered by scholars to be one of the most ambitious and complex paintings of the 15th century. Its detailed panels convey its sacred matter with such realism that art historians mark it as the start of the Northern Renaissance. The altarpiece, also known as the “Adoration of the Lamb”, was begun in 1425. The exterior frame of the altarpiece indicates it was started by painter Hubert van Eyck who died before he could finish, and then completed by his brother Jan van Eyck in 1432. The painting was then acquired by a wealthy patron Jodocus Vijd for placement in the Church of Saint John, Ghent, Belgium. The work is an excellent piece of study because the painting is so complex. The panels display a variety of detailed scenes, but the center of the altarpiece is Jesus Christ, the Virgin, and Saint John the Baptist. And below them, a host of saints assembled around the lamb. The masterpiece consists of 24 panels of varying size and shapes aligned two rows so that the 12 panels are visible opened and then 12 panels are visible when the panel is closed. Measuring 11x15 feet and painted in oils the altarpiece can be left open or closed. The pictures themselves are laid out in two tiers. Jan van Eyck used oil paint to create tiny vibrations of light within the saturated colors most of which are symbolic significant. The Ghent Altarpiece was commissioned by the wealthy businessman Jodocus Vijd for his chapel and hence the creation of the masterpiece. The altarpiece represented a “new conception of art”, in which the idealization of the medieval tradition gave way to the observation of nature and a more exact representation of the human being.…

I am the recipient of the huge, black, Severson drill press given to me by my great grand father, who came over from Germany in 1902. I do not know if you have ever seen a Severson drill press, but the craftsmanship is something to be proud of. Everything is hand crafted, pulleys, gears, and even the key that tightens the chuck. My grandfather who inherited this drill press from his father just passed it down to me. I can remember endless hours watching my grandfather working with the press, drilling holes in decoy bodies or just doing odd jobs for the neighbors. He always told me the sang "keep your eye on the metal and not on the bit because its not the bit that your name Glessing 2 is on it's the product that the bit makes." This sang often times has run through my mind when I think of my grandfather but, never more so when he was in the hospital last year dieing of lung cancer.…
