Abstract
As an effective, efficient, and economic approach for water purification, adsorbents and adsorption processes have been widely studied and applied in different aspects for a long time. In the recent years, a lot of novel adsorption processes have been developed for enhancing the efficiency of removing the organic and inorganic contaminants from water. This article reviews some new adsorbents and advanced adsorption methods that specialize in their compositions, structures, functions, and characteristics used in water treatment.
The review emphasizes adsorption/catalytic oxidation process, adsorption/catalytic reduction process, adsorption coupled with redox process, biomimetic sorbent and its sorption behaviors of POPs, and modified adsorbents and their water purification efficiency.
Key words: adsorbents; adsorption; pollutants; water purification

1 Adsorption/catalytic oxidation process
Adsorption/catalytic oxidation process can be divided into two categories: in situ and out situ adsorption with catalytic oxidation, according to whether adsorption process and oxidation process occur in the same reactor. Evidently, the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants by
TiO2 supported on adsorbents belongs to the former. The adsorption and catalytic oxidation of dyes by magnetic metal oxide composite (Wu et al., 2004) can be identified under the latter described.

The first parameter is absorbance. By experimentation, it is apparent that charcoal is more effective in the area of adsorption than both of the zeolites. The second parameter is the cost of the sequestration agent. There are several methods used to produce zeolites since they are made for commercial use. These various methods are able to synthesize large quantities of zeolites at low costs. The third parameter is the rate of production. The production of charcoal requires a delicate process, whereas zeolite can be synthesized easily. The Procion Red dye was a suitable PAH model, because the structure of a PAH and Procion Red Dye both contain benzene rings. Since both compounds have similar structures they both can be affected by intercalation from charcoal or zeolite. Intercalation is a process where a sequestration agent, such as charcoal, can adsorb PAH…

They then examined these samples through the SEM, XRD, and TGA to learn more about the properties and differences. The SnSp (powdered) species came from the SnSg (granular) synthesis during solvent exchange and the CO2 supercritical drying process. They found that the PAN hybrid was very much more mechanically stable than pure chalcogel, even though the as-made chalcogels adsorbed iodine more quickly, and more effectively. The sorbents that contained more Sn2 S3 took in more iodine than others with a lower concentration of this. This is because PAN’s contribution to iodine capture is very low, so it makes sense that if there is more PAN, you will have a more stable structure but less effective iodine capture. They also discovered that less time was needed to achieve maximum adsorption with SnS50+I than the SnSg+I and SnSp+I. The reason for this was not discovered. Although another worthy note from this experiment is that originally the PAN was dissolved in DMSO before it was added to the chalcogel. This actually improved the final surface area of the resulting hybrid sorbent. This leaves this notion also up for further investigation and…

Water is one of the many things that all human being need in order to survive. Considering the vast amount of water that is on the planet, it is reasonable to believe that there is more than enough water for everyone to have their fair share and more. Yet this sadly is not the case, as the majority of the water on Earth is unsuitable to drink due to the fact that it is tainted with a numerous amount of contaminants, such as bacteria and salt. The amount of safe drinking water is decreasing more and more each year and will soon become one of the more scarce resources on the planet. Over the years, many different people all over the world have tried to create and refine a water purification process that is both effective and efficient. The…

[pic]"Activated" carbon filter media is produced by super-heating dried coconut husks in a low oxygen environment, using a process called pyrolysis. The resulting "biochar" husk, is a purified form of carbon, containinglarge amounts of cellular sized surface area, negatively charged to attract positively charged toxins. Toxins in the water become attached to the husk's carbon surfaces.Over time, the attractive charge of carbon surfaces are neutralized, making it time to change the filter.…

Strategies for dealing with industrial liquid wastes involve both reducing the quantity produced and their environmental impact. So there is a considerable amount of research work going on throughout the world for better and better technologies for reduction, recovery and recycling of hazardous liquid wastes. Adsorption methods using activated charcoal and biological treatment are the presently practicing methods industrially for the treatment of liquid discharges. However these are not very energy efficient methods. Pervaporation proves to be a good alternative to the currently practicing methods of recovering organic solvents from process effluents since it has the advantages – improved selectivity, reduced energy consumption and separation of azeotropic mixtures and mixture of components with close boiling points.…

Within Africa only 46% of the people have access to fairly safe drinking water, more than two million people die from water based diseases per year. SODIS is an effective method for treating water in areas where fuel is unavailable or expensive. SODIS is a more economical and environmentally friendly option therefore could even be used where fuel is available. The application of SODIS is limited if there aren’t enough clean and new PET bottles or if the water is highly turbid. In fact, if the water is highly turbid, SODIS cannot be used alone; additional filtering is then necessary. This is the reason why flocculation is promising as substances used for it such as Alum is fairly…
