New ISO Standards for Determination of Formaldehyde in Leather
ISO 17226-1:2008 and ISO 17226-2:2008
Under the joint effort of the CEN Technical Committee CEN/TC 289 (Leather) and the IUC Commission, IULTCS, two new ISO standards, ISO 17226-1 and ISO 17226-2, were published on 1 May 2008 for the chemical determination of formaldehyde content in leather.
ISO 17226-1:2008 Leather – Chemical determination of formaldehyde content – Part 1: Method using high performance liquid chromatography
ISO 17226-2:2008 Leather – Chemical determination of formaldehyde content – Part 2: Method using colorimetric analysis
These two standards cancel and replace ISO/TS 17226:2003, which has been technically revised.

Highlights in the new ISO 17226-1:2008 and ISO 17226-2:2008 :
In case of dispute on the result, ISO 17226-1:2008 (i.e., HPLC method) shall be used in preference to ISO
17226-2:2008 (colorimetric method) for determination of the conformance.
For the HPLC method (i.e., ISO 17226-1:2008), the wavelength setting for UV detection has been changed to 360nm (cf. 350nm in ISO/TS 17226:2003).
For sampling and preparation of samples, conditioning of samples (according to ISO 2419) prior to test is not required in the new ISO 17226-1 & 2:2008.
Add a new step for presenting the result on the basis of the dry substance. This is calculated by multiplying the formaldehyde content by the factor of 100/(100 – w), where w is the moisture content (in %) of the leather sample determined in accordance with ISO 4684.

The compound formaldehyde itself isn't found in nail polishes. In actuality, a resin form of formaldehyde is in nail polish. When formaldehyde becomes a resin, the formaldehyde is no longer present. The resin is called the tosylamide/formaldehyde resin. It is what makes the polish tough and resilient. On the other hand, formaldehyde (chemical formular: CH2O) is in nail hardeners, which is still considered to be nail polish. Besides nail hardeners, formaldehyde can be found in many household products such as latex paint and super glue. Regardless of what product it is, when it is used, a large amount of formaldehyde is released into the air and inhaled. Formaldehyde can also enter the body and be exposed on the skin…
