Ninja and Adam
MythBusters: Walking on Water

Background Information - Jeanette Villeda

Adam and Jaime are to conduct an experiment to see if it is possible to walk on water, but before they could begin their experiment they must have completed some research. They began by looking back into the history of the ninja and ancient Japanese myths, and then continued on to search for a modern day ninja. They discovered the “mizugumo”, which is a circular flat wooden disc that might have helped the ninjas stay afloat as they walked over the water.
Description of experiment - Kelsey Alvarez (Ms. Garrity)
The mizugumo is said to distribute the ninja’s weight evenly on the surface of the water because of the wide surface area. Due to this, the ninjas would not be able to sink. To make the mizugumos Adam decided to measure and cut 2 circles of pine wood. They were then each sliced into 4 pieces. Later, he painted the 4 pieces a shade of brown. When this was completed he sanded the paint off. When the 4 pieces of wood had that worn look color he proceeded to adding a rectangular block in the middle of the 4 pieces. He tied the 4 pieces and the block in the center with twine, repeating this step for each one. Adam has now created an exact replica of the mizugomos.
When the footwear was complete they proceeded to the actual experiment. The twine that was left over was used to tie the mizugumos on to Adams shoes. Adam was now ready to "walk on water", however, after taking his second step into the pool he sank right down. Jaime then explained that in order for Adam to walk on water he would have to be able to take very fast steps across the water. In Adams second trial at attempting to walk on water he decided to increase his momentum like Jaime suggested, and even with this done, he still sank right after the second step. Adam and Jaime then concluded that Mizugumos were actually a myth and were never actually used to walk on water.
However, the team did not give up yet. Adam

Adam Walsh was a young boy whose life got cut short at the age of 6. Adams parent’s names are Reve and John Walsh. “Adam was abducted from Sears in Hollywood, Florida on July 27th, 1981.”( Web article on msnbc.com) After this incident a lot changed when it came to finding children and John later became famous as being the host of the show “Americas Most Wanted”. Adam went to Sears with his mom that day. They were going to the store to shop for lamps.” The store was approximately one mile from their home. They parked where they always did, and walked in the store holding hands. They went into the North entrance which put them in the toy department. Right in the middle of the toys was the big attraction: a television monitor displaying computer video games. They were brand new back then. Several children were playing with the game, and Adam asked if he could stay and play also. Reve said okay and told him to stay there until she returned from the lamp department. The lamps were about 75 feet away -- out of sight, but not very far. The lamps were out of stock, so Reve left her name and number. She was gone about seven minutes.” (web site: Rosen, 2011, Child search) When she returned he was no longer at the video game in fact none of the children where there and the video game was silent. She had only been gone a total of maybe 10 minutes. Reve began walking down many aisles calling out Adam’s name. She saw a boy that had the same hat on as Adam and asked him if he had seen a boy with the same hat as him on. The child told her he had and pointed to the west exit door. Reve was positive that Adam would not go out the west door. She then asked the toy department clerk said she had not seen Adam. Reve asked everyone she came across but they all said no. She then went back to the clerks to see if she could get her to call the police. The clerk said “Oh, well, he probably just wandered off. I 'll bet he went looking for you. Well you know how kids are; maybe he…

In Giles Milton’s novel, Samurai William, the reader is taken to the other side of the globe to experience the history of old world Japan. Though out the book, Milton provides reason for complex historical events and actions, while still communicating the subtleties and mysterious customs of the Japanese. The novel also closely examines the wide range of relationships between different groups of Europeans and Asians, predominantly revolving around the protagonist, William Adams. The book documents the successes and failures that occur between the two civilizations, then links them back to either the positive or negative relationship they have. As the book goes on, the correlation is obvious. Milton shows us the extreme role that religion, etiquette and trade played in establishing positive relations between visiting Europeans and the Asian civilizations.…
