Electronic games are beneficial to humankind
Electronic games (video games), are defined as games played on visually-displayed screens (Helicon, 2016). Nowadays, electronic games are becoming increasingly popular in our daily life. 90 percent of school-aged individuals play video games (Bavelier, 2012). And as a matter of fact, the average age of gamers of PlayStation is 33 (Bavelier, 2012). Since video games are entertaining and addictive, there are a considerable amount of criticism about the games. However, as Daphne Bavelier (2012) said, we should be far more nuanced when we talk about the effects of video games. It is maintained that electronic games negatively affect the mental health of gamers because games reduce players’ contact with the environment around and lead them with tendency to become more aggressive (Nick Tews, 2013). But in practice, video games make people more intelligent, more sociable and even more morally-conscious. Electronic games can connect people without the limitation of time and space, so in this way electronic games are beneficial to improving people’s social ability. Dr. Kathy Sanford (2013) said when children are playing games, they are making ethical decisions all the time. If they do negative choices, they will see the results of each decision. A study conducted by an international team of researchers in Columbia University shows that children who play more video games are found to be 1.88 times more easily to have higher overall academic performance (Doug Bolton, 2016). As video games are fun, they are more easy to be accepted when in educational use. In fact, video games have been applied to educational area for a long time. Paccone (2017), who uses computer games to teach civics at San Marino High School said concepts presented in computer games are easy to understand and process, while concepts presented in more traditional methods, tend to lack context and relevancy.
