Devils Pond Have you ever deliberately disobeyed your parents just to satisfy your curiosity? Multiple times I find myself “hanging on by a limb” as the old folk say, but this time it really was life or death. Next to my house there are some deep woods, with a small pond where no one was allowed to go. I knew the dangers and still I wanted to see it for myself. All kids do things they’re not supposed to do, so it was no surprise to my dad, when I made my trip into the woods to see this forbidden pond. It started on a late autumn day, when I heard dad talking to some friends of his. He was telling them a story about a time he almost died, but I didn’t hear the whole thing, so I asked him about it later that day. He started off telling me a story about when he was little, maybe eight, he found a pond, down deep in the woods. It was in a hollow, surrounded by trees. This small pond was dried up sometimes and full of water the other times. This is because it was fed by the river, but when the river was low the pond would dry up, or so he thought. He was a young boy and decided he wanted to go check it out a little more, but he didn’t want to go alone so he took a friend who lived up the road. As he and his friend strolled through the woods and finally they came upon the pond. Dad said he stood there trying to build up the nerve to walk onto the dry autumn leaves that was once a full pond. He took his first step, but something was wrong. Instead of standing on dry autumn leaves, he sank to his waist his body being swallowed whole in the dry river mud. He fought like never before trying to free himself, but the more he fought the deeper he sank. His friend was useless, just standing there in fear, dad screaming for him to get help; finally, he awoke from his stumper of fear and took off running for help. Dad was sinking deeper, now to his chest, and left to defend for himself. He started praying and as

I believe Margaret Drabble’s statement, “Our desire to conform is greater than our respect for objective facts,” to be quite true. Throughout history, people of all ages have wanted to be accepted and belong to a group rather than look at the facts and measure what is true and false. It is very evident in our society today that not only do we want to be accepted and belong, but we also are willing to do whatever it takes, no matter what the consequences turn out to be. I agree with Drabble’s statement and believe that it is true all around the world. If you were to step outside our society and look back at it objectively, I can assure you that you would see evidence of this.…

Donald Halls’ “A Hundred Thousand Straightened Nails” is a symbolic presentation of the decay of New Hampshire the author uses the life of Washington Woodward to show the pointless existence that is experienced in a place as lifeless as New Hampshire. He uses the contrast of his own opinion and the beliefs of Woodward to show how after a while it is impossible to escape a pointless mindset. Washington finds joy in discarded relics such as old nails, and wood, and finds simple joy in simple life. He settled on life, in his lifeless town and spent his life with his animals, his stories, his beliefs and his box of “A Hundred Thousand Straightened Nails.”(Hall)…

My story begins at just the age of 8, we just had moved to a South Texas town, Kountze, this town had about 2,000 to 3,000 people residing in it. My parents had decided this was the perfect place to raise me and my brother who is two years older than me. I didn’t understand much then, but from what I can remember the only problems I had was what flavor of ice cream I wanted when my father took me to the ice cream shop and which Disney channel show was on. But then, as I thought things were just fine, On one summer night I heard noises in my parents’ bedroom and I overheard my favorite hero crying in the bedroom and saying he needed to tell us something terrible had happened. As he sat me down on his lap and told me that grandfather had passed away. My grandfather had been diagnosed with lung cancer shortly after he came from India to America too visit us. My father had to take him back to India when they found out he diagnosed. I sat there not understanding what had happened and hearing my hero in tears for the first time. It was one of first of many forms of tragedy I have had to witness as I thought nothing could shake my father but at this moment I realized I was wrong and got scared, this moment had changed my whole…

“Crippin' is a choice, but it's forever. You may slow down, but you will always be down forever.” (Washington 1969). Founded in Los Angeles, California in 1969 by Raymond Washington and Stanley Tookie Williams III; the Crips are now a loosely connected network of individual sets. Through the years the gang has grown to be one of the largest and most powerful gangs in the United States, currently with over 30,000 gang members. Members of the are known to be involved in murders, robberies, drug dealing, and many more criminal activities. The gang is notorious for its flamboyant use of the color blue. Wearing blue any and everywhere, gang members often get heckled by the police. The Crips are known to have an intense and bitter rivalry with the Bloods and various surrounding gangs. They are also locked in an ongoing struggle over the drug trade with the Vice Lords. Raymond initially called the gang the Baby Avenues in an attempt to emulate older gangs and the activities carried out by the Black Panthers; Raymond was fascinated with the movement of the Black Panthers. The Gang renamed itself the Avenue Cribs and then took on the nickname the Cribs, because of the young age of members. The name Crips was first introduced in the Los Angeles Sentinel newspaper in a description by crime victims of young men with canes, as if they were crippled. Resources state, it could have just been a misspelling error, either way the name stuck, and the Crips were officially Born Gangsters. Stanley Tookie Williams, generally acknowledged as co-founder of the Crips, started his own gang called the Westside Crips. Crip meaning “Community Revolution In Progress”. The Crips became popular throughout southern Los Angeles as more youth gangs joined; at one point they outnumbered non-crip gangs by 3 to 1, sparking disputes with non-crip gangs, including the L.A. Brims, Athens Parks Boys, the Bishops and the Denver Lanes. The Crips eventually…
