In Nectar in a Sieve by Karmala Markandaya, Kunthi and Irrawaddy are two characters who face similar obstacles, yet their motivation was different. Kunthi decides to go through prostitution because she was starving, and she needed money. For example when she says “I have come she continued, not to be seen, or to see you, but for a meal.” If she didn’t get what she wanted, then she would threaten Rukmani, and also when Rukmani says “She spent a lot of her time making unnecessary journeys into the town, where with her good looks and provocative body. Without having any food, she would look pale, she would have wrinkles and she would look ugly. In Irrawaddy’s case, it was quite different, where she would also go into prostitution just to help her brother not to starve. For example when Irrawaddy says “Tonight and every night I will hunger no more” and also when she was sneaking into the house hoping she wouldn’t get caught and Rukmani accidentally kills her thinking that it would be Kunthi, when Ira’s father asked her where she was, Irrawaddy responded saying” It is better not to speak” said Irrawaddy. When Nathan finally hears what happened, he doesn’t take it very well and he get mad at Irrawaddy, she was able to get food for Kuti, he grew better, yet he still died.
