My Mother
As I began to think about who has had the most significant influence on me, I began to think about all the people that were part of my academic career. Then I realized that I was looking at the wrong part of my life. I should not have focused on the people that have influenced me in the academic aspect, but the one person who has influenced me the most every day. My mother has the greatest impact on my life as a whole.
My mother’s loving, caring, thoughtful, gentle, and persistent nature has shaped me as the person I am today. Though I can only hope to have her thoughtful personality one day, I am still thankful for her love and guidance. She is a constant example for me throughout my life. I have watched her as she struggles to take care of our family through the bitter and sweet. She has showed me persistent love towards my brothers, fathers, and other family members. Even when she was diagnosed with cancerous tumors, that made her weak and nauseous, she was able to show the characteristics of a leader who brought our family together. I seriously cannot comprehend the tremendous amount of time and strength she has to support a family of five as a full-time housewife. She is always telling us to get ready for class, school, and always keeping us prepared. She required a tremendous amount of strength to keep normality in our life yet battling her chronic disease. My mother has clearly shown me that with determination and persistence, one can accomplish anything. Even when she was under a lot of stress from home, friends, sickness, and family, my mother was determined to take good care of us and guide us to be good and moral people. As the years passed, there were incidents where the tensions grew between my mother and me. As an adolescent, I became rebellious, and often questioned my mother’s decisions and choices. However, now as I look back, I realized she always wished for the best with her decision. She wanted me to be a better person, one that loves,

I have read excerpts from two texts. An informational text titled ‘The Sea Around Us’ by Rachel Carson, and a literature text titled ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’, by Jules Verne. In both excerpts there are many descriptions of the ocean. Many people debate whether details are described more vividly in informational text, or in literature. I feel the ocean was described more vividly in the excerpt from the literature text ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’.…

I am her oldest child. I remember that young woman with a quick temper who could yell when she needed to. Now having my own children, I know that no one sees your worst sides like your children do. But I also watched her change, with the death of her own parents when she was in her 20’s, through the loss of a son, and through her battles with cancer. With each sorrow, mum grew in wisdom and strength, she reached out in ways that I am only still becoming aware of. She spoke with other mothers who lost sons and daughters, she knew the pain, she knew how awful that could be, and she knew how to comfort, hug, and cry with those who had lost one of their own. Through that loss she gained a different perspective on being a mother. She learned that love speaks louder than anger and that some things are not worth the fight. It’s a grandmother’s wisdom – and I hope and pray that I listened enough to take those lessons so hard learned to heart. When mum and dad found out last year that the cancer was terminal, that the cancer that we had hoped, prayed and believed was defeated had come back. She knew where she was going, and that she would see Wilder, my brother, again. That she would fight as hard as she…

It took me eighteen years to spend some quality time with my mother and discover what an incredible journey she has had with my brothers and me. She is the kind of person who has always been very involved with all parts of our daily lives. In fact, she was the kind of mother who always had time for her three sons, worked full-time and had time to devote to community projects too. Her energy and enthusiasm for all of these things seemed endless and she always tried to teach the three of us to see the value in the idea of giving back to the community. I was always glad that she was present at my games and supported me through school, but it took me over a decade to learn what motivated her to be so enthusiastic about her job as a mother of three sons.…

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

My name is Lucinda Wilson; I am a 26 year old single mother raising three beautiful children. Their names are Kaleel Wilson (8), Samiya Wilson (6), and Xavier Wilson (5); they are the loves of my life. If I had to identify someone who made a significant influence in my life, it would be my mother, Ms. Vernell Scott Wilson. My mother has had twelve children and I am the eighth child. When I was young I watched my mother struggle to take care of all her kids. If that left her without, and she made sure that her children were secured. On September 22, 1989, we had a terrible tragedy happen to our family. On that day in which was twenty-three years ago we lost our father in one of the most horrible storms to hit Lee County; Hurricane Hugo. My father went to our mobile home to get my brothers, after that was done he went back for a reason we never knew. He was electrocuted and he passed on that night. At the time my mom was in the hospital about to give birth to one of my youngest sisters. During that time I was only three years old, so I didn’t understand it then, but even now to this day all I know is that my father is gone. My mother has been a strong woman because she had to deal with that, and not only that, she had eleven kids left to raise alone. My mother never gave up on us, no matter how bad, destructive, and hard headed we were. My mother has a major influence in my life in so many ways. From things she went through in life, I’ve learned to never give up, trust in God, and be good at whatever it is that you put your mind to do. She taught me to don’t settle for the less, but always do your best. From her being a mother that has raised twelve kids alone she showed me that I can do it with three. There were so many times when I told my mom that I wanted to give up. She would look at me and say, “I didn’t give up on you”, that was enough for me to keep pushing and saying I can do this. There is this one scripture in the bible that sticks with me…

Viktor Frankl’s book, “Mans Search for Meaning,” has an abundance of despair, loss, and chances to become bitter, however, Frankl turns those potential feelings around and makes them into an experience, one he can learn from. It is similar to the saying “learn from your mistakes.” Frankl experiences the worst of the worst, and he learns something magnificent. This is not a story about the horrible things that happened to him in the Nazi camp, but one about his search for meaning.…

Many times in life, we come across a tough, influential person who leaves a great and powerful impact on our lives. Maybe it is an actress, superhero, family, teacher, or just a stranger who did something that changes your thoughts and decisions about life. Fortunately, I came across to someone who supported me from the very beginning of the journey of my life. That person is my beloved mother, who taught me to walk my first steps, who introduced me to the crazy side of life, and who has always been there for me when I needed her. Ever since I could remember, she has been right beside me supporting any goal I was trying to reach, even when it was incredibly ridiculous to everybody else. When I grow old with my own children, I hope I can be there for my kids, and make an unforgettable impact on their lives the way she did for me.…

Inventions have shaped the growth of civilization since the beginning of time, but can an invention actually do more harm than good? Who is at fault? Should those who came up with the ideas be to blame? In answer to the first question, yes. Take gunpowder as an example; gunpowder was first used in China for entertainment, such as fireworks (Pyro universe, History of fireworks). However, when the invention went into the wrong hands, it became a weapon, which made it do more harm than good. It is not those who came up with the idea who are to blame, it is the people that use it in a deleterious way in human society.…

Each person that I have known has taught me something, but a significant amount of what I have learnt and implemented has come from my mom. The fact that my mom has had the greatest influence on me is simply because she is the person who has taught me to be responsible for myself, something which has also helped me to discover who I really am. Her sense of independence is an aspect that has had a profound effect on me; I believe that independence opens up many opportunities because it requires that a person be confident in his identity and that he know his needs, goals, and limitations.…

As I thought about who had had the greatest impact on my life, I began to think of everyone who had been involved in my academic and athletic careers. I realized that I was looking in the wrong part of my life. These people have passed through my life, yet the person who had the most impact was one who affected me everyday. My mother, by far, has had the greatest impact on my life. Her heart and determination are something that I can only hope to have myself one day. I have watched her struggle with running a household while trying to balance returning to college full-time and working a part-time job. I did not realize as a young child what courage it took to take on this workload. Now, as I enter the college scene directly from high school, I cannot imagine how hard it must have been to juggle the everyday work of being a full-time mother as well as the workload of college. She never hesitated to drop everything to rush my brother and me to dance, soccer, riding, or karate. I could always look up from the sidelines of a game to see her cheering me on, while she held an armload of books and tried to occupy my brother.…
