I have read excerpts from two texts. An informational text titled ‘The Sea Around Us’ by Rachel Carson, and a literature text titled ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’, by Jules Verne. In both excerpts there are many descriptions of the ocean. Many people debate whether details are described more vividly in informational text, or in literature. I feel the ocean was described more vividly in the excerpt from the literature text ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’. I believe the ocean is described more vividly in the excerpt from the story Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea because when I read it I feel like I’m there. The imagery is very strong and everything is described in such great detail. For example, when M. Aronnax was describing the coral kingdom in the ocean and said “I was tempted to gather their fresh petals, ornamented with delicate tentacles, some just blown, the others budding, while small fish, swimming swiftly, touched them slightly like flights of birds.” He described perfectly what the petals of the corals in the ocean looked like. He stated that some were blown and others weren’t. He also did this when explaining the effect the light of the lamps had on the ocean. He said “The light from our lamps produced sometimes magical effects, following the rough outlines of the natural arches, and pendants disposed like lusters, that were tipped with points of fire.” He even went as far as to describe the outlines of the natural arches of the coral. The excerpt from the informational text The Sea Around Us focuses more on getting their information across to the readers rather than imagery. This is emphasized when the author was describing how ocean life grew more and more complex. He described how aggregations of specialized cells arose from simple one celled creatures. When describing this he stated “From simple, one celled creatures, others that were aggregations of specialized cells arose, and then creatures with organs for feeding,

The ocean is a beautiful sanctuary not only for the animals that coexist within it, but also for people that spend more time in the water than on land. There are instances where the sea can represent a wide array of emotions such as respect, fear, and adventure. To me the ocean water is nothing less than a second home on the grounds that it reminds me so much of my home with emotions such as compatibility, fighting and peace coursing through the currents.…

The Ocean of the Streams of Story symbolizes the human brain, this is where the "streams" and "currents" of ideas flow and originate. We don't just use our brain to store data, but we create and execute new ideas by using this compiled information: "unlike a library of books, the Ocean of the Streams of Story was much more than a storeroom of yarns. It was not dead but alive" (72)…

These two books share a common theme. In the fiction resource The old man and the sea the theme is easily identified versus the nonfiction where you need to really listen into what they are saying. The theme they compare is when you are faced with a problem instead of giving up try to find a solution to the conflict. The old man only had a 12 foot skipper and the fish was a foot longer than the boat and the line could barely hold the fish's weight but he fought and eventually harpooned the fish.In the nonfiction resource the fish was wrapped in the line and they had to figure out a solution to bring in the fish without causing harm to the fish. Another theme leads that the technology does not matter just get the job done. Even though this theme…

I grew up living through several life crises not knowing what to do about them, only that my grandma could make things better. My grandmother is the heart and soul of my huge family. At age six, my parents divorced and my mother got remarried, leaving my siblings and I behind to my half sister and grandmother’s care. The day I turned seven, my father passed away, leaving behind my eleven siblings and I. Although my dad had passed away, my grandma always said “it’ll be okay. You all still have us.” My mother signed paperwork making my half sister our legal guardian. Before she left, she told my siblings and I: “You are all like your dad. You won’t get anywhere,” but she was wrong. Because of my grandma’s pushy attitude, we’ve made it far in life, without my mom. Since then, she and my grandmother have been raising us.…

My 92 year old grandmother has always been a great influence in my life. She used to take care of me when I was younger and she was still staying with my family. She has a kind, gentle smile which makes you want to talk to her when you see her. She speaks only Teochew but she can understand Chinese very well. As a form of respect, we try to converse with her in dialect. She is a very independent and strong willed lady as she always prepares her own food and does her own laundry.
