CHAPTER EXERCISES:

NAME: Melody Reyes

SECTION: G-107

COURSE: BS Computer Science

GROUP: 4

Instructor: Mrs Llonora M. Javier

Chapter exercises:

2. Explain the main functions of a rootkit.

* A piece of software that allows unauthorized user to override security and get administrator access to a computer, it gets its name from the fact that the main administrator account on many computer systems is called the “root” account. A rootkit is a stealthy type of software, often malicious, designed to hide the existence of certain processes or programs from normal methods of detection and enable continued privileged access to a computer.

4. List and briefly explain the four main rights granted to the author by copyright.

* The right to reproduce the copyrighted work
When a person purchases a book at a bookstore, they have received a property right in a copy of a copyrighted work (namely, the book). The book owner may then resell the book, or even destroy it, since they own the book. However, the book's owner did not receive any copyright rights when they purchased the book. All copyright rights are held by the book's author until the author specifically transfers them. Consequently, the book owner may not make any copies of the book, since the right to copy a work is one of the exclusive rights granted under the Copyright Act. This distinction allows a copyright owner to sell copies of a work, or even the original work itself (such as a sculpture), without forfeiting her rights under the Copyright Act.

* The right to prepare derivative works based upon the copyrighted work.
Since many films are based on novels or scripts they are in cases where the film's copyright has lapsed but the underlying work is still covered, the film cannot be freely distributed without the permission of the original author on whose work the film was based. Example, the 1912 George Bernard Shaw play Pygmalion

Copyright laws give certain rights to creators of original works of authorship. It prevents others from using their work and gives them an incentive to innovate. “Copyright protection does not extend to ideas, facts, procedures, processes, systems, methods of operation, concepts, principles, or discoveries. Instead, it protects the ways in which they are expressed. The story line of a play, for instance, is protected, but the ideas, themes, or messages underlying it are not.” (Mallor, 2007) The U.S. Constitution’s Copyright Clause (Article I, section 8) empowers Congress to promote the progress of Science and useful arts by enacting copyright and patent laws.…

A personal short term goal of mine is to stay active and not slack off on my physical health. Exercising is the most effective way to put myself into a positive mindset. By starting out small and constantly overcoming my laziness I start to lose my indolent habit. Becoming more productive helped me realize I sold myself short, by doubting my ability to pass my Advanced Placement English test. I went in with a negative aspect, questioning my ability to pass it. By telling myself I cannot do something, it discourages me from trying. Although I did not pass it, I am still challenging myself by taking AP Government and Macroeconomics this year. I plan to achieve this goal by allocating an hour on Sundays to review concepts that I learn in class.…

We created three goals before returning for our final semester. My three goals were to first finish the year with an A in all my classes, second to graduate Plainfield East High School with a GPA close to 5.0, and finally make it to where I want to be in life, to make my dreams a reality. All three goals are very important to me and each of them in my mind need to be accomplished. There is a certain amount of work and effort that needs to be put into accomplishing these goals. If all three goals are in fact accomplished, I will then be able to live the life I want to and be successful.…
