After high school I moved to Hawaii to attend college. This was my first experience of being on my own. Through my experience of being independent I learned more about myself. From this experience I was able to understand who I was and realize what I truly wanted from my education. Before I became independent, I was unsure on what I wanted to do in my life. My sophomore year was a bit easier now that I had adjusted to the normal homework, I still had a tough time but found a love for my history and English classes, I also found myself becoming more sociable compared to my grade school years. There are many accomplishments in my life of which I am proud, however there are two for which I am especially proud. Those being, having the opportunity to play varsity shortstop in high school, and having good enough grades to be nominated for, and to be admitted into, the National Honor Society. I like to try and figure things out by myself and teach myself how to do things. When something doesn’t work, I try to figure out different ways to fix it before I ask anyone to help me. Most of the times I can figure it out on my own. Another way I am independent like Lyddie is that I never want help on my homework. I like to do it by myself and learn from my mistakes. If I depend on people to help me all the time, I would never learn anything and I would never become independent.…

If it wasn't for my family, which always told me to keep on going and never stop, I would had never gotten this far. The support also plays a big roll, because I have family and friends that look up to me and I don't want to let them down or myself down. If it wasn't for myself and God I don't know where I would be. I wouldn't have made it to where I am today if I didn't have the courage and the support. How I got to where I am today is by staying focus in school, and believing in myself that I can make it to where I want to be. Another is also being in alternative school, not knowing what I just walked into, which made me wanted to be a counselor and help those that are struggling with behavior problems or needing that person to talk to and listen to. what had got me where I am today is patients, love, and support from family, also being around positive people and staying true to yourself and…

I looked day and night because I knew what my grandmother had told me was right. If I wanted things, I had to be independent and get it myself because no one else would do it for me. I eventually found a job at McDonald’s and began to save up my money so I could reach other goals. After saving up enough money, I bought a car. I began to then buy all the little things that I wanted. The feeling of independency was great. I didn’t have to ask my mother or my grandmother for anything. I got it all on my own and I was extremely proud of myself. I applied my grandmother’s aphorism of being independent because I knew adult was coming quickly. I needed to prepare myself for something great. I would soon be on my own, and I would have no one to rely on but myself. I knew that my mom wanted me to be independent so that was a goal I had to reach.
