Starfish or sea stars are marine invertebrates belonging to the phylum Echinodermata; class Asteroidea. Crown of Thorns Starfish (Acanthaster planci) are found on coral reefs in the tropics ranging from the Red Sea, the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and all the way to the Pacific coast of Panama. It plays a major role in the destruction of fast growing coral species. Scientists believe that this starfish has lived on the reefs for tens of thousands of years and when the populations of this echinoderm increase in number, they can seriously damage the coral reefs.…

    Music Appreciation

A few weeks ago I attended a recital/concert in the UMHB auditorium performed by the Waco orchestra (I think that’s who it was). At first when I got there, I wasn’t paying attention because I was bored and knew I was only there to get my fine arts experience credit. After about two songs, I remembered that I was in Music Appreciation and some of the songs they were playing, I heard in class before. I began to tune into to certain instruments and listen to their unique sound and what significant part they played in the song. I also began to realize that I was catching on to some of the patterns in the melody, for example ABBABBA. If I had never been in the music appreciation class I wouldn’t have done any of those things, but it’s just ironic that when you take a class like this, you find yourself paying attention to certain things in music that you never would have found yourself doing prior to the fact. One thing that really interested me was that in one song, a woman who was playing the trumpet had her own solo part. For one, I honestly didn’t expect her to be playing a trumpet, as bad as that sounds. Secondly, I didn’t expect her to be as good as she was. I was in shock at some of the notes she was hitting, and I admit that I was pretty impressed. I played the trombone in middle school so of course I had to watch the trombone players while reminiscing that I used to be the one up there doing that, I was pretty good. After not playing for so long, I forgot the notes and the certain places you slide the horn to make a certain note. Sometimes I wish that I could still play because I believe that being able to play an instrument is a beautiful talent. I would definitely go to another musical now because it’s fun when you’re there to listen and admire, instead of just being there because you have to. When you’re actually involved with the concert, it makes being there a lot more fun and makes you appreciate the work and practice that was done to…

The connection between politics and music can sometimes be rather discreet, and a lot of songwriters today include many messages in their song lyrics which would appear subliminal until analysed. Political issues are expressed in music and I believe this is because music is one of the most effective ways to reach out to people, as not everyone watches the news or picks up a newspaper. Because popular musicians have such a large fan base and a strong influential impact on their fans, it would work effectively to openly promote and support political candidates as well as particular causes, or write their music in order to rebel against them. A great example of this is the song 'if I was president' by Wycliffe jean, this song was inspired by conspiracy theory, because it was believed that unnecessary amounts of money has been spent on the war and the president just sits back and looks at what is happening, Wycliffe believes that every time somebody comes along to try and present the truth, they'd be ‘assassinated’. He wrote this song and put himself in the president's position, believing that he himself would be assassinated the same as martin Luther King and John F Kennedy did. Wycliffe believes that the 'children' should be told the truth, and everyone should strive to be the president. In 2008, will I am produced two video's which were made in order to make America support the work of Barrack Obama. The song 'we are the ones' features people from different walks of life explaining what they would like to change about the earth. One example is 'I think it's time to change, I want a better future for my children' after each person gives an opinion. All of the people featured in the video recite Obama's name. This video and the video 'yes we can' became very popular with over 28 million views between them. ‘Will.i.am didn't set out to make history. In fact, says the Black Eyed Peas front man, he's not even…

Pearl enthusiasts all agree that the world’s best pearls throughout history have come from the Persian Gulf and most notably around the island of Bahrain. This is probably due to their abundance and ability to form naturally without being cultured. Today, India is probably the host of the largest stock of pearls. But, many of those pearls were originally collected from the waters around Bahrain.…

In an attempt to keep up with the demand for fish, farm fishing, also known as aquaculture, has become a sustainable approach to producing quality seafood. According to the article, “Fish Farming”, farm fishing has been around since the early 20th century, but has in recent years, doubled with regards to the global demand for fish products, and those numbers are still rising. INTRODUCTION The "Groupers" of the genus Epinephelus are excellent marine food fishes in the IndoPacific and Garribean regions an ave assumed importance for commercial culture in recent years. About 49 species of this genus have been reported from the seas around India. Most of them inhabit coral reefs and rocky habitats, while others sea grass beds, muddy and sandy bottoms. Ju;eniles of some species occur in lower reaches of estu~ries, occasionally ascending upper reaches also. Most species are solitary and all are predators on fishes and invertebrates. The estu~rine groupers, Epinephelus tauuina and E.malabaricus are iiiOStimportant for aquaculture. Groupers are haray species which can tolerate wide fluctuations of salinity and spawn throughout the y~r probably with a peak in monsoon seasons. The major constraint for large scale commercial production of groupers is the shortage offmger' either from the hatchery or from the wild. The shortage of seed, high mar 'et value and scarcity of groupers from the wild have encouraged many countries in Asia to initiate research and development programmes on grouper breeding and seed production. Groupers are extensively cultured in floating and fixed net cages and coastal ponds in many Southeast Asian countrIes sincemore th~ 15 years. Groupers of the species E.tayuina and E.malabaricus are cultured in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Hongkong from mid seventies. E.suillus and E.amblycephalus in Taiwan, red grouper, E.akkar in Hongkong and Japan, E.mexico and E.morio in Mexico; Ktauuina and E.malabaricus in Indonesia, Kuwait and India are cultured. In Philippin~s, E.tauuina, E.malabaricus, E.sexfaciatus and E.bleekeri are cultured at present. The recent annual production of groupers from these ventures are: Thailand 450 t, Hong Kong 365 t; Singapore 153 t and…
