Ms. Cortes
Ms. Cortes made the children peanut butter, strawberry jam and bananas sandwiches for dinner and gave them each a cup of milk. The children were immediately giving a bath when they returned home from the park. Ms. Cortes took the children to the park for the second day in a row. Mr. Perez joined her and the children. She and Mr. Perez took turns playing with the children. This gave each of them a chance to take a smoke break. The children were happy and kept telling their parents to look at them and see what they could do. Mr. Perez and Ms. Cortes cheered them on when they were not talking to me. While we were at the park, I looked to see if Ms. Cortes would set rules, enforces them when needed and play with the children. I also watched to see how Mr. Perez interacted with the children. Perez at the park really helped Ms. Cortes out. She did not have to take all the boys to the bathroom at once and his presence helped, when Nicholas and Messiah stopping letting the other children go down the slide. When he asked them move, they did not. So he took them off the slide. When the boys were trying to run out of the play area, he chased them back. These are things that I have noticed Ms. Cortes will not do. There is a balance with Ms. Cortes and Mr. Perez’ parenting skills. She does not want to discipline children. Mr. Perez on the other hand does not mind. They left the park 7:45pm, so Ms. Cortes could feed the children and get them in bed. On the way back to the apartment Ms. Perez bought the children ice cream cakes of the store. When we got to Ms. Cortes apartment, she told the children that they had to take a bath. They wanted to watch T.V. and eat their ice cream cakes. Ms. Cortes told, when they take their baths and if there is still time they could eat and watch T.V. They boys did as they were told. When I left the children were on the couch eating and Ms. Cortes was making herself a

The atmosphere was very warm and inviting. I waited in the lobby about twenty minutes as the lady at the front desk was speaking on the phone. After she hung up, she was very friendly and went to get Ms. Fabiola Cervantes, as we had a scheduled appointment and had light communication through emails for about a week. After meeting with Ms. Cervantes I learned all about Latino Memphis, it’s clients, and what the agency provides for the community. Latino Memphis’s purpose is “We assist Latinos in the Greater Memphis area by connecting, collaborating and advocating for health, education and justice.” (Latino Memphis and Ebiz Solutions). They offer many different services at “El Centro” or the center, this is where Latino immigrants in the Memphis area can turn to for help of all kinds, including but not limited to, access to computers, assistance filling out any kind of government form or job application, clerical support, discussions with police officers about their rights and how to report crimes. “Tu Voz” is an ear, a voice, and an agent of change on issues impacting the Spanish speaking community of the Memphis area. Through advocacy, policy research, training and civic engagement activities, Tu Voz helps the Latino community to become more engaged and influential in the…

In an effort to expand trade and create economic growth, the United States, Mexico, and Canada entered into the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994, creating the largest free trade zone and setting the stage for massive economic growth in all three countries (NAFTAnow). NAFTA, however, is the poster-child of an even bigger cultural and economic trend called neoliberalism, an idea which promotes the breaking down of trade barriers, privatization of the economy and a cultural shift of focus towards the upper class. Neoliberalism transformed Mexico in the late 20th century, influencing nearly every realm of society, from a complete economic transformation to a shift in Mexican cinematography. Neoliberal policies and ideas have…

Today I was placed in Mrs. Perez classroom which consists of toddlers ages three and four. Considering that it was a nice day outside the lead teacher, Mrs. Perez instructed the two assistants and an aide as well as an older teenager who I believe was a volunteer to take the children out to enjoy it. She mentioned to me she wanted to take advantage of the extra help she had so she can get going on some activities she was trying to get together. I offered to stay in and help this time instead of following to observe the children at play. She just asked me to do basic stuff like many copies of papers that had huge letters on it with some sort of cartoon next to it (Queen for Q, R for rat and S for Sun I recall) and cut out some letters shapes.…

Louise knew by the quietness something was wrong with Mike, and waited until the children finished their homework before joining him on the patio. When she sat down beside him, without saying a word he went to the living room and turned on the TV, but never watched it, which he usually did when he had something on his mind. At first, Louise wondered if it might involve the children or at least Justin since he always wanted to visit the old man. When she realized the children had nothing to do with his mood, since he came home in that condition, she went to the living room.…
