Moving Away

Moving away from all of your best friends can be a real tragedy in a sixteen-year-old teenagers life. It's hard to get up and go eight hundred miles away from everyone you know and everything you grew up around. I had this happen to me about three years ago and it is the largest change I have ever had to adjust to in my life. It wasn't the changes around me that I was bothered by; it was that I did not know one living soul for hundreds of miles and all I wanted was a friend. Two days into the summer after sophomore year at Governor Mifflin High School in the little town of Shillington Pennsylvania I would find out the worse news that a sixteen year old could hear. I found out that in four days my family and I would be moving to a suburb outside of Chicago because of my dads recent job change. I was

Summer went bye like it wasn't even there and by the time school started I was very depressed. The new school I was going to was Naperville North High School which was about ten times the size of my old school in Pennsylvania in size and in the number of students. In my school in Pennsylvania there were about twelve students in each class, here the number runs around thirty two. The school building was so big I had a lot of trouble getting to class on time let alone finding them in the building. The school wasn't what I was bothered by the most because it was the fact that I didn't have any social life and I was a social person. There were a lot of different groups of people at my new high school, it was tough for me to fit in and meet new people. Everyone just knew me as the new kid and didn't even bother to find out what my real name was. The first month of being the new kid is a very hard month of school. I knew no one who I had anything in common with and began to get terrible grades in

Have you ever had to move away from your best friend? In the book El Deafo, Cece Bell had to experience this heartbreak, which I can relate to in my life significantly. Cece had to move to a different town causing her to leave behind her friends and even sadly her best friend. This caused her to have to make new friends, which was extremely difficult. I experienced this exact event a couple of times in the past 8 years. Frist in 2009, I moved from Texas to Oklahoma, which causing me to leave behind old friends and make new friends. Then in 2013, my parents withdrew me from public school and started homeschooling me. The transition, caused me to lose contact with my schools, which was tough on me and even harder to make new friends than it…

My father worked in the United States Marine core during my adolescent years, and because of it we were constantly moving around. I believe it made me more of an adaptable person, however once I met whom I considered my best friend moving around was not so fun anymore. I’ve always been more of a quiet person so meeting friends was not easy for me, and the few I had were as close to me as family. Moving to Philadelphia from Virginia was very traumatic for me at that age. My parents told me that I would have many meaningful people come in and out of my life as time went on, but at the time I figured I would never find another friend like the one I had. After months of being in a very depressive state I became very close friends with our neighbor’s daughter whom is still one of my closest…

The sadness that comes with saying goodbye to the friends you have spent your whole life with when moving is never easy. Throughout my education, I have moved schools 3 times and every time it has been a struggle to acclimate socially, mentally and academically. I started at Diegueno Middle School in the middle of the seventh grade. This was now my second school in only the first half of my first year of middle school. Again I had to adapt to new people and a different course load. This school had a much higher standard of academia then my prior school and at first, I struggled. School felt alien to me. Time passed and I made new friends and I got used to the difficulty. I started high school with the same group of friends from middle school…

When I got to the age I could start school, I was excited. I started school like any other kids my age did. Kindergarten through first grade were fun for me. Second grade came and that is when things started happening that I did not like, and third grade I absolutely hated. I was being bullied and was ignored by teachers. I was viewed differently just because that school thought I should have been in special ed. They got their way for a little while, by having my parents sign some papers that would provide some extra help, but the contract never said I would be in special ed. My parents were absolutely furious when they found out I was in special ed when they did not give permission to the school to put me in there. So came the time to move. I started attending Udall Schools in fourth grade. I was welcomed by a class that was eager to know me and teachers willing to help. My teachers helped me learn the concepts I missed from the previous school.…

I was the new girl and I had no friends. Everything started off alright, but then everyone started to pick on me and call me names. It started off with childish things and words. I would sit alone at lunch, a lot of the time crying, wondering what was so wrong with me that made everyone hate me. I felt like I was the one doing something wrong. Then the bullying started getting more physical. I would start getting nasty notes in my locker and I would just be walking down the hall and someone would stick their foot out and trip me. It got to the point where my mom had to pull me out of school because the school administration wouldn’t do anything and they would tell me it was my fault. At that point I just started to believe them. After being pulled out of school for a month my mom decided it was time for me to go back. Of course I was terrified, but I thought maybe it would be different. I thought wrong. The kids that were messing with me would start to follow me home when I was walking alone with their hoods up. I would just start to run home. Soon enough 8th grade was over and summer was…

I would have to say that going back to school was a hard and challenging decision, but so far it has been a good decision on so many levels. When I was about 14 I had to drop out of school. We got to do a lot of shopping and decorating rather than sleepovers and long nights out with the friends. School was just around the corner and I have never had to go into a new school as a teenager and try to make new friends, it was something that made me really nervous and I wasn’t too sure if it was something exciting to be experienced, I just thought if it was anything like my old high school I was not going to be excited. My plan was to go in and only have to take a few classes so I could try and avoid that whole making new friend’s part. I didn’t know how to make new friends; I’ve never had to make new ones so it was a lesson to be learned. My first day of school came quickly I tried my best to make some kind of excuse so I wouldn’t have to go. The school was so much different, it was tiny, one story high and a quarter of the class size of my old high school. I was used to climbing up three stories of stairs like I was climbing Mount Everest and being practically out of air by the time I reached the top. No doubt about it this was a whole new…

It was very nerve wracking for me the first couple of days- I was taking 7 different classes, taking the school bus for the first time ever, and just meeting so many different people; it took a couple of weeks to get used to, but I really liked it. I’d could say I enjoyed middle school just a little more than high school. Being a “social butterfly” I didn’t have the slightest problem in making new friends, so there came back my “popularity"- like I had in elementary school. What also came back from elementary school was my attitude towards teachers and school work. Again I wouldn't misbehave or break the rules, but If someone would give me an attitude or scold me I would give the attitude right back… and that sometimes would give me a detention or a talk with a counselor. I had to stop the attitude sometimes and bite my tongue, because I was a cheerleader for the school’s team. Being on the team meant I was representing the squad and the school, so I always had to be on my best behavior and do the best I could to have a good GPA to stay on the…

In the ending of junior year I started messing up and my grades were going down so my mom got worried and decided to move into a new school since she thought my friends were a bad influence. The other reason why I moved to San Fernando High was because its my home school. My biggest challenge I faced starting at San Fernando was if the classes were hard and the classes were big. The worst part of facing a new school was finding the right friends and not being able to do good in school. I overcame this challenge by telling my self everything is going to be okay and just focous in shool.…

When I got there, I realized that the people I made friends with acted differently at school. I mean, I get it. The summer camp "high" had worn off, you feel different. At school, there's a lot of pressure on you from your peers, parents, and even yourself. I constantly felt that I had to please everyone around me, that I had to make everyone happy. I'm a relatively introverted person, so becoming comfortable with a cabin of twelve girls is one thing, getting comfortable with a school that has over 800 students in it is another.…

After several months of going to school I was starting to understand my classmates and I was also able to have conversation with them. I started to enjoy going to school I even sigh up for after school programs. A year went by and my father bought our first house a few minutes away from where we were previously living at. This new house was huge, two floors five bed rooms and three full bath rooms. The house was nice and all but I felt like I had started from zero again. Since the new house was in a different district that meant that I would have to go to a new school. I was sad because I wouldn’t know anybody at the new school. Surprisingly within the first week of school I was getting along with most of the kids in class. As time went on I was now speaking good English and had lots of friends. When summer vacation came we took our first trip back to Puerto Rico after two years to visit our friends and family. My entire family was so happy to see us and for how much I’ve grew and how fast I had learned…

So when I started secondary school, I saw it as an opportunity to start afresh. No one knew me, I could be a different person, and maybe people wouldn’t be so mean. And at first, it worked. I had a group of friends, which was a novelty for me, seeing as it had never happened before, and I made more of an effort in lessons. My parents didn’t mind that I was going out every night to hang out in the park. They were just relieved that I wasn’t still a loner. I actually spoke to them at home, told them about my day; they were amazed.…

It’s my freshman year in high school, and I must admit, so far high school is even worse than middle school. Despite the fact that I have 1,675 more days to go to finally graduate, being bullied and named called is worse than eating my grandma’s Brussels’ sprout. After middle school, I had hopes that things would get better. I was always the laidback kid that had no friends. I’ve was always considered as the quaint and unusual guy who barely had friends. Despite all that, some days, I was both happy and sad; and I always tried figuring out how that could be. There were some days that it got really bad that I even had suicidal thoughts. I guess I was tired up of all the lonesomeness, the embarrassment, and the fear.…
