Movie Analysis: A Bronx Tale
The movie "A Bronx Tale" is obviously set in the Bronx and sets a young man Calogero Anello, "C" against the trials and tribulations of growing up incorruptible, in a neighborhood of mob crime and wayward minors. The movie holds characters that fit delinquency terms such as chronic offenders, and characters that fit theories such as the choice theory. Calogero at the end of the movie seems to have an identity crisis as mentioned by Erikson in his theory. Also characters show signs of being latent delinquents, and some characters seem to attribute their actions to the social learning theory. The movie as a whole is a great sign to see the varying degrees of delinquency especially in urban communities. I think the movie also gives people …show more content…
The word chronic offender applies to most characters in the movie. One of the stars of the movie "Sonny" Chazz Palminteri admits in the movie he had been to jail before. During the movie he is involved in obvious criminal offenses. Two obvious offenses are aggravated assault when his mob friends and him get in a fight with the motorcycles gang Satan's Messengers. Also early in the movie he kills a man in the street. It shows that he is a chronic offender because despite being to jail and obviously being exposed to specific deterrence he still has the urge to commit crimes. Even thought the crimes are never prosecuted and he is never caught. Calogero's friends "Slick and Mario" are both in my eyes chronic offenders. In their youth they commit "small crimes" such as stealing from the food cart man. "Crazy" Mario as he is called in the movie I feel is more of the leader and I think Slick just goes along with what Mario says. It is shown later in the movie that they assault a group of African American's riding bikes through their neighborhood. Then at the end of the movie they try to burn a building down and fire shots inside …show more content…
Nicky Zero is an obvious delinquent whose family life probably led him to where he was at. Nicky Zero as described in the movie was the neighborhood thief. Zero wasn't his actual name though. The movie said his mother called him zero because they said he would never amount to anything. The movie never mentioned a father but it was my impression he didn't have one. With a family life like that where a mother calls you zero and a father not around he is a prime example of a latent delinquent. He probably thrived of people knowing him as Nicky Zero and didn't want to "disappoint" anyone. In the movie he is selling Calogero and his friends a gun, he thinks the whole situation is quite humorous and they even talk about shooting somebody just to do it. Nicky Zero obviously has inexcusable actions but they can be accredited to something more then his bad choices. A theory dealing with social learning explains that delinquent behavior is modeled through contact with some other delinquent. This is evident in every character in the movie. Nicky Zero no doubt learned how to steal or heard stories on how to get certain contraband from the mob presence in his neighborhood. Calogero and his friends in the beginning of the movie are directly mimicking what the mobsters down the street are doing. As children they act like the mobsters and try to guess which one the child is acting

At the beginning of the movie, Bruno is completely naive about Germany patriotism. It has the audience curious because Bruno live in Berlin where is known as the capital of Nazi Germany. He at first thought the concentration camp as a farm where he could possibly meet his potential playmate. It is surprising when Bruno is unaware of the Nazi’s propaganda against the Jews. Assumingly, Bruno and Gretel are going to a public school where Nazis ideology was educated in the early age. Even with an overprotective mother, Elsa, Little Bruno must have seen the inequality in Berlin such as benches at the park labeled as “Aryans only” and the Jews being rejected from using streetcars in Berlin. As a German boy, Bruno must have witness the scene of “der Führe”, the leader, passing the city with their expensive car. However, it is the opposite with Bruno, instead of acknowledging the Nazi activities, he is utterly impractical about what is happening in Germany during the 1940s like the children today.…

In The Breakfast Club, there is an overwhelming idea of the future. The students only think about one week in advance before their Saturday detention. They never thought about what their actions could do to their future. For example, Brian did not seem to grasp that because he was so ready to kill himself over one failed assignment. He was thinking in the now and not in the future. A noticeable moral of this film is: Parents should actually raise their children. In this film, all of the parents have minimal screentime, but it is still evident that they totally suck. Claire’s parents use her as a tool of revenge against one another, and her parents fail to see the effect it has on her. Andrew’s parents push him too hard, and as a result he is…

Just because an individual is in a poor or crime stricken community does not necessarily mean that the individual will become deviant. The individual is influenced to become deviant by who they are associated with. Sutherland’s differential association theory explains deviant behavior as something that is “learned through associations” (Britz & Grennan, 2006, p. 20). There has to be more associations with people who are deviant than that of people who are nondeviant in order for one to become deviant (Thio, 2010).…

With the classroom dark and the students hushed A Bronx Tale begins to play on the overhead TV. The loud catchy tunes of the do-op music in the Belmont neighborhood and the colorful cars and dusty alleys flash before the screen taking us all into a different world- something only movies and books can let us do. Calogero, who begins the movie as a young boy, we are quickly introduced to, and it becomes quit clear he will be playing the role as the protagonist throughout the film. It is through Calogero that we are then taken through the town of Belmont and meet all the drastically unique and colorful characters that make up his town. The one he puts real emphasis and recognition on hinting to us he will surely have a role in the films near future is Sonny, the town’s gangster, and who we would easily identify as the towns highest ranked man on the social ladder.…

Walter Miller lends into the theory of delinquency by defining it as having a need for excitement and a search for thrills.…

According to Jeffrey (1960) and Matza (1960) attempts to answer these questions proceed within a framework derived from three fundamental assumptions. These elements provide foundation for most contemporary theories of delinquency and encourage testing theory through scientific methods of research. Determinism that is that crime does not result from rational decision-making but from identifiable forces that may be biological, psychological or sociological. Differentiation and Pathology refers to the idea that criminals are different from that of the ‘normal’ person and these differences are so great that they can be referred to as pathologically ill (Burfeind, ) .The Chicago school was the first significant shift to this pathological approach.…
