Motivation is important for student success because that is what keeps us going in our quest for greater knowledge. If somebody had to sit for 8 hours a day and read a stack of books in front of him or her every day, but was not told which book to read, or why they had to read them it would not make a lot of sense. The person who had to read the books maybe would look at the titles and perhaps even read one of them, but boredom would set in. That is where motivation comes in.…

Motivation is a psychological state that allows an individual to reach a particular goal. The mind requires visual milestones for encouragement and to therefore overcome challenges. In particular, university study works toward the achievement of a goal or career and is certainly challenging. Whatever the reason for study, to be able to achieve the desired outcome requires determination. Without creating small steps along the way, it is easy to become disengaged and lose motivation. As Sir Winston Churchill once said, “He who fails to plan is planning to fail”, therefore motivation and planning are key factors to a successful outcome. To plan is to develop a scheme of arrangement, similar to a map, to assist in finding direction for a specific purpose.…

A motivation plan for any school is extremely important for the success of any educational program. Students who are not motivated will not learn and in turn won 't succeed. Many components should be included in a motivational plan so that all the needs of students are met and each student has goals that are attainable and can be reached. According to Hersey (2008), "Goals should be set high enough that a person has to stretch to reach them but low enough that they can be attained." Goal setting, rewards, both tangible and non-tangible, and a sense of belonging are motivational components that should be included in a motivational plan.…

Grades are often seen to be one of, if not the most effective method of motivating a student to work to their fullest potential. For example, a student who receives an A-grade is going to be encouraged by the grade, as they see it to be an affirmation of their academic efforts. An A-student views their grade with pride, and will work very hard to maintain said grade, once achieved. An example of this is as follows. John recently received an A on his Math test. He then goes home with a sense of pride, bragging about it to all of his friends. John now realizes that he must keep up the good work and continue to work hard for school, in order to continue to feel as good as he does today. Conversely, a failing student will regard his/her grades with shame, and will be more motivated to raise their grade from the gutter as a result. An example of this is as follows. John receives an F for failing to complete an assignment on time. As a reaction to this, John decides that he will turn his life around completely and alter his studying habits so that he turns in his assignments on time in the future. In conclusion, grades are by all means the most effective way of motivating a student to excel.…

When working with young people to advance and support their learning, one of the first points to consider is the motivations of the student to work with you and other professionals to complete various tasks and activities. If a child is able to motivate themselves (intrinsic motivation), this can make a significant difference to the relationship between the young person and the professional, along with their view and attitude towards a subject/activity/task that they are working on. Effectively, this bypasses the need for extra work to motivate the young person as they can already see the benefits of working hard to complete the task. However, not all young people are self-motivated (for various reasons) and need motivation to come from someone…
