Most Likely To Succeed Summary
Reading is something we do every single day not just in school but when we are driving, or when we are ordering food at a restaurant. Every single day we read but this week one paper that stood out to me was a article about football and teachers. I can see how they may not seem as if they relate or if they will ever relate. However the article really shows how we may never know who’s right for the job even if it’s choosing a quarterback for the nfl or picking a teacher. In Most Likely to Succeed by Malcolm Gladwell they talk about a scout named Dan Shonka, and how he can’t determine if Chase Daniel the star quarterback at the University of Missouri will actually be able to play in the NFL. In the NFL you have one moment to throw the ball just …show more content…
Finding good teachers is also difficult because you can’t know if someone will be a good or bad teacher. You will get interviewed but that will be based on how you did in school and what gpa you had compared to you actually in a classroom. Both quarterbacks and teachers can never really be determined by how they play a game in college and a teacher can’t be judged based on their gpa. A quote from the article that I found so true with both teachers and quarterbacks is “no one knows what a person with the potential to be great teacher looks like. The school system has quarterback problem.” An example of this would be back in 1999, Shonka was on the staff of the Philadelphia Eagles. They took five quarterbacks and only came out successful in the end. However, teachers don’t get this luck we can’t have taxpayers pay more just to have four tested and only have one come out successful. We will never see a potential teacher or quarterback because we will never know what they will be like. No matter how many experiments or IQ tests we try to provide to determine these qualities we can never actually predict whether that person will succeed or

Walt Disney once said, ”All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them”(“Walt Disney Quotes”). Two football players, Shawn Grim and Rudy Ruettiger both had a dream that they had to work for in order for it to become reality. Ruettiger’s dream was to play football at Notre Dame. Nobody thought that he could do it, but he proves them wrong. Grim was a high school football player who’s dream was to get a high school diploma and go to college, unlike any of his family members.…

With reading the article “ Would I let my son play Football”,I came to a consensus that I would let my kid play football. “ How can I bash a game that produced so many friendships, paid for my education, and helped me become comfortable financially” .( Fujita 3). I agree with this article’s statement because football has helped people pay for college and help build their respective careers. Football has also made many people financially stable after playing in college and moving on to the NFL. “Football isn’t for everyone Scott ...but it was definitely for me”. (5). With Football not being for everyone, it is still made for some people, and if my son/ daughter wanted to play football then it would be made for them. The people that are made…

“If we prepared our kids academically as we prepare them for wining state championships, there is no telling where we would be now.” (Bissinger 134) Boobie Miles’ day in school consists first of a language arts class where the students are at least two years behind their peers in their skills. He is doing a research paper on the life of zebras. Then, he goes to Algebra I, a class he should have taken as a freshman. He is barely passing. After lunch, there is creative writing where he spends time playing with a purple plastic gargoyle-looking monster and writing a few words of a story. This is his favorite class, because the teacher doesn’t expect much from him. She sees football as all a kid like Boobie has going for him. He eats some candy and eventually leaves early for football practice. It’s not only going on at Permian, Dallas Carter goes onto win state championship but faces severe penalties the next year for their grade tampering because the principal changed one on the player’s grade to a passing grade so that he could play in the championship game. That shows how people were so consumed by the want to win that they couldn’t acknowledge that they were making mistakes and had their priorities mixed…

Teacher professionalism was swept away, and No Child Left Behind changed everything. Assessment was slowly becoming prominent, and officials demanded effective teachers who would raise scores. But what else defines an effective teacher besides scores? In search for these great teachers, one solution was Teach for America—enrolling top-flight students from elite universities to teach for two years in schools enrolling low-income students. But, their inexperience is greatly disputed among many.…

Everybody dreams big when it comes to sports. When you’re a kid, your imagination stretches as far as your dreams. We’ve all been there. Shooting hoops in the driveway turns into the NBA finals. Batting practice turns into game seven of the World Series. That race against your brother turns into a race for Olympic gold. But what if your dreams don’t pan out? Don’t worry; you’ll be just like the rest of us who have never played in a Super Bowl or game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals. Just because you’re not good enough to play sports professionally doesn’t mean you can’t be around them. Part of what makes sports so great is the people involved. Yes, I’m talking about the coaches, the fans, and the executives. I’m also talking about the sports writers. What is a sports writer anyways? It sounds easy. You watch the game, and then you write about what happened. That’s basic comprehension skills. Right? Not quite. Sport’s writing is more than re-telling a specific event. It’s more than reading a statistics sheet or interviewing players. It’s different from other kinds of writing. There’s a certain type of literacy that needs to be understood. It’s not necessarily the type of literacy that can be learned from a book or in a class. It’s something to be born with. Through my research, I have tried to come to an understanding of the true identity of a sports writer.…

Football is one of the most popular sports in American history and culture. Whether a person’s favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys or the Denver Broncos the rivalry of football seems to never cease. Almost everyone knows about football Sunday. But some people only see the game as a violent, unpredictable sport that can only cause harm to the boys that decide to play. Some mothers dread their child going on the field. They worry about concussions and other major injuries that can occur. They say the coaches are too harsh on the boys and the practices are too long and rough. However, these mothers do not understand what it takes to be a coach or what it takes to play football and the mental stability a player needs. These people want to change the rules of football and make it a safer…

Students in America need a good education to keep our economy strong, and school is the best place to get it. Whether someone attends a private, public, or home school, they're all going to get an education, and that is what is important. However, there are many factors that can reduce a student's ability to learn and perform in school. An overemphasis on sports is one of these. I know this is a tired subject and should have been buried long ago, but I cannot help but mention it. Some schools have a tendency to play favorites with big sports stars. Whether or not it is a conscious decision is another matter altogether.…

Many are called, but few are chosen. Not all of us who aspire to be teachers will become teachers someday. We will be passing through many screening process that will test our abilities, skills, and intelligence. We should also meet the standards required in our chosen field to be accepted and become professionals. Our success in passing through all these tests and standards will depend on us – on how we pursue in our studies, on how we make decisions, on how we give value to our education, on how we direct our minds towards positive goals, and on how we motivate ourselves towards excellence.…

Teachers, more often than not, are victimized by the over-worked and under-paid policy of the system of the past and present dispensations. This leads to the emasculation and demoralization of their ranks. This probably explains why the teaching profession is not attracting the best and the brightest from the crop of students anymore. Expectedly, this will correspondingly result to the vicious cycle of mediocrity in education.…
