Module 5: Emotional Flexibility
The concept I found most important from module five was Emotional Flexibility. Emotional Flexibility is the most important to me because it is the concept I need to improvement the most on. I witnessed the implications of not applying Emotional Flexibility when I was a newly promoted SSgt. I was the primary point of contact for managing our flights monthly award program. I was pleased with the results of my efforts but my Superintendent didn’t feel quite the same.
He ordered me to immediately increase the number of squadron level award winners by collecting award packages from every person within our shop, every month. During a role call the next morning I requested every person submit a rough draft award package to me every month for award consideration. Grumbling commenced almost immediately amongst all the ranks. I immediately took it as a personal attack and criticized the NCOs for not supporting a request from a fellow NCO.
My fellow NCOs tried to explain their grumbling was toward the Superintendent. A fellow NCO and I shared some strong willed words that concluded as a screaming match between the two of us. Around two weeks later a friend of mine mentioned his frustration with the Superintendent in regard to his cloak and dagger approach to increase the Airmen’s awards so he had some additional EPR

Supervisors will be able to engage with their subordinates and collectively engage in methods to adjust to the needs of the individual and the mission. Peers will benefit from this concept through being aware of stressors and emotional needs amongst the office. The bi-weekly sessions will allow peers to proactively share their stressors and find ways to step in to adapt and assist when needed and also provide peers additional understanding and patience when fellow peers are having emotional disparities from their

A few days ago, I SPC Ensley, was caught lying to SGT Henshaw about, my whereabouts, why I did not contact him before, or when I was leaving, and as well as my reason for hiding that information in the first place. I should not have attempted to withhold that information, and give out false information on where I was, and why I, SPC Ensley, wasn't honest about it when SGT Henshaw asked in the first place. I had no reason to lie, nor did I show any hint of any of the army values that an enlisted military personnel who is a non commissioned officer in training would normally portray to younger, more impressionable soldiers in our unit.…

This decision has left a lasting impact on the unit and on my own career as intelligence professional and Non-Commissioned Officer. Prior to my service in the Regiment, I performed my duties at every echelon, Strategic, Tactical, and “White SOF” which pertains to units that don’t have a command relationship to JSOC. With a desire to broaden my intelligence capability I assessed and was selected to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment. I was presented with unique opportunities for my rank as a Staff Sergeant while serving overseas on my first rotation with the organization. I was put in a position of increased responsibility and given minimal guidance while being expected to execute my mission at the highest level. I effectively utilized the F3EA cycle, developed under McChrystal, against the highest priority enemy networks within Afghanistan, exceeding all expectations of even the most experience NCOs…

Later that day I was told by Major Steve Schmidt that you were inquiring the whereabouts of the CID detectives in the dispatch area and you stated in front of Major Schmidt and other civilian personnel that “It’s Friday afternoon I’m sure they are at home”. This was done again in an unprofessional and condescending manner when in fact the detectives were actively investigating a recent homicide. In addition, you have repeatedly referred to Majors and the Chief by their first name on a regular basis. This also is a very disrespectful and unprofessional especially in front of your subordinates. Furthermore, there have been numerous administrative errors that have been documented over the past several years that continue to be a problem for the efficiency of the police department including payroll entries, mileage reports and subpoena processing. Most recently you failed to sign a highway safety overtime detail log. I have also been monitoring radio traffic and your condescending and unprofessional communications have started to affect your subordinates. I have noticed you have failed to give your location when called on the radio which is important not only for officer safety but also for the efficiency of call response. Your subordinates have also started to follow your example and are not giving their…

After the scandal the former leader and the current one tried to change the culture. There were nearly 50 changes directed in the "Agenda for Change" issued by the Air Force Secretary and Chief of Staff in March 2003. Changes range from standing up a sexual assault response team to the clustering together of female cadets ' dorm rooms to cracking down on underage drinking and alcohol abuse to strengthening the roles of the active duty officers and non-commissioned officers assigned to each of our 36 cadet squadrons.…

Navy Core Values, Navy Ethos and Sailor's Creed bind us to make the correct choices by putting aside our personal agendas. The two junior officers willfully wrote political emails that were their personal beliefs. Navy Ethos states "Integrity is the foundation of our conduct; respect for others is fundamental to our character; decisive leadership is crucial to our success". In this case, the two junior officers focused on their ideas of politics and conducted themselves completely against what we should believe and stand for as stated in the Navy Ethos. Favoring someone in a political position and discussing those ideas in government email are not in keeping with the Navy Core Values. Leaders like this are an embarrassment to the Armed Forces, peers and subordinates. These actions can cause dissension amongst the ranks, affect moral and negatively influential to others. How can these two juniors officers not expect that someone would disagree with them? What were their thought process when attacking the retired officer for correcting them? These two junior officers lost respect and confidence from those who knew them and anyone who witnessed the email exchange. Their decisions were flawed and brought discredit upon…

During my junior year the biggest event I had to plan was the social event for the battalion: military ball. The event was one eagerly looked forward to, and rightfully so, as it was always a blast with the cadets and fostered many memories that will last a lifetime. I took planning this event very seriously and in the end many told me that it was the best military ball to date. Several cadets came to me after the formalities had concluded and thanked me for putting in the time and effort to make military ball happen. Seeing their gratitude and smiles on their faces made me feel appreciated and I knew that all the hours I had put in and almost wanting to tear my hair out in frustration had not gone in vain. During my senior year, another crucial event within the program changed. The criteria for our annual inspection had been altered drastically and we had to start from scratch will almost everything. This inspection is what JROTC works toward the entire school year, due to the fact that if a program receives a low score a certain amount of times, then the program can be disbanded. I, along with my staff, worked for months making sure that we had everything we needed and that our presentation was the best it could be. When the day of inspection finally came around, our hard work paid off. The battalion received a perfect score and was officially the best JROTC program in the county. This was the first time since my high school JROTC program’s conception in 2000 that we had received a perfect score on the…

There were a few themes that were not in my top five I expected to see before the assessment, starting with Empathy. As a leader, I have prided myself on being a confidant, someone my team could come during a difficult time. I know from past issues on my team that I am always able to see both sides of a conflict and put myself in others shoes. The second theme I didn’t necessarily expect to see, but wanted…

I did not address the NCO reiterating me with the proper title and I was being blatantly disrespectful towards the NCO in charge of me. As Marines we are taught to control our bearing and always be tactful. It is one of the most important leadership traits that are instiled in us in recruit training. All Marines have an obligation to conduct themselves as adults and to show respect to the ranks above them. Straying away from these obligations are not an option due to the rules…

You are the Assistant Terminal Manager for a regional transportation company. You report directly to the Terminal Manager and are responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day operations. The Terminal Operation Managers are responsible for the manpower planning and actual running of the shifts, and they report directly to you. You are currently working from 4 p.m. until 2 a.m., your Terminal Operations Manager is currently working from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. The operations manager coning in on this particular evening, Rick Raleigh, is regarded as the best operations manager at the terminal and gets along great with all of the terminal personnel. Having been recently transferred to the facility and being several years younger that Rick, you have noticed a condescending attitude from him toward your authority. Before the 11 p.m. labor shift arrives, you inform Rick that Joe Camel, one of the labor employees, performance index has been way below average and that he should be assigned to the “stack” function of the operation. The individuals who stack the trailers are accountable for any loading errors and Joe’s shipments will be closely scrutinized. Rick quickly informs you that he is in charge of the manpower planning for the shift and unless you wanted to take over his position he would set the manpower as he saw fit. To make matters worse, two of the dock supervisors witnessed the exchange between you and Rick. Your boss had just moved and cannot be reached that evening. You do not have the authority to make final decisions on hiring or firing any terminal personnel, but you are charged with running the facility while you are working. You know that you must do something, but you are not sure just what to do.…

In addition to the weekly team meetings, the individual members of the team will meet with their manager on at least a quarterly basis to discuss his or her performance. This will afford them the opportunity to provide feedback on his or her Performance Appraisal as well as discuss any other concerns they may have regarding performance or career management. These meetings will be used to establish where the individuals are with regard to his or her career goals, and offer a setting for establishing new goals if they have already met those that have been set. This will challenge them to increase their performance.…

Most officers probably looked forward to this day, but mine was a small affair. After all, my initial counseling from the outgoing battalion commander was, “consider yourself the interim commander, we need somebody to hold this property” Fine by me, I was leaving the Army, this would only delay me a couple months; an opinion I kept to myself. After all, I was well received within the company and got along with the NCO’s. My new XO and I were great friends, and it’s not like we had much to worry about. Equipment reset was going well, as were the personnel transfers in and out of the unit. My life revolved around NCOER submissions and equipment turn in. The new Battalion command team had transitioned as had the adjacent company commanders. I felt very comfortable with my guys, but began to feel very awkward outside the unit. After all, I was still the interim commander, and hadn’t even been to the career course; a fact some of my new “peers” would jokingly point out at command and staff meetings. In fact, the new BN XO one day casually told me “Don’t worry Brent, nobody’s expecting too much from you. Just think, if you do some small things well, it would be like a home run for you”. For some reason, that comment…
